Just got a hook knife today, and then I saw this video! Perfect timing, thank you for your knowledge!
You're welcome!
Lots of valuable information here!! I just aquired a basic thick leather strap and polishing compounds NO instructions & not about going to ask the boyfriend for help sost me some chisles with his help.
Excellent video, thanks! Just what I was envisioning. Love that Beavercraft honing tool!
Seeing that curved strop made me think. Get a short piece of PVC pipe and cut it in half lengthwise. Glue sandpaper to the inside. Depending on how big the PVC is will determine the curvature of the surface. Small knife, small PVC etc.
ANOTHER “no-nonsense guide” fucking THANKYOU brother. Amazing video and GREAT tips.
Thanks and take care.
Thank you this is helpful
Appreciate this, cheers man! 😁🤙
You're welcome!
Thanks for this.
My pleasure!
The hook knifes, you lay them flat in the stones or the strops, without angle at all?
The inside, yes. But outside at an angle matching the edge grind angle.
should i use sand paper to sharpen first or just strop
Hi, I really like the shape of that hook knife you have closest to the camera. What brand is it/where did you get it? I’m looking for a hook knife for scooping tighter curves.
If you are referring to the really small hook, that one is from OCC Tools (aka Kryshak carving tools now) and is the #7 spoon gouge. kryshakcarvingtools.com/spoon-gouge-7/
Where did you buy your flexible leather strop?
It was from beavercraft
thanks for the info . hook knives are not the easyest thing to sharpen so often dont use them when i could just to avaoid the sharpening so with this strop there is no excuse lol .just ordered one yesterday after watching your video, will be here tomorow .looking fotward to putting it to good use ..thanks again .
You're welcome!! I hope tou enjoy it :)
@@CarvingisFun oh i know I will thank you!
The Beavercraft hook knife has a large bevel on the outside. The inside is flat. So do you just sharpen the outside edge and only remove the burr from the inside?
Yep, pretty much
why not use your hook knife to carve the groove into a wood block, then put your sandpaper or strop on that block? why buy one?
It is indeed a practical option, but this one does have more function to it too.
So your honest opinion, is it worth it? I'm having trouble stropping my hook knife
Thanks
Oh, i think the strop is worth it! I use mine all the time!
Have you used a cone stone for the spoon knives? I just bought one and can't find any hand tutorials for it.
I've seen them around, but never really used them much myself. you only really get a short stroke length that is close the to curvature of your hook knife. Still, they are useful for getting into certain shapes if needed.
@@CarvingisFun I did just use it the first time. Work nice.
when will you be carving the gnome?
Not 100% sure yet, but it is on the list to do. I'm still trying to figure out a good and simple design I can make a tutorial on. I should have some time this weekend to further develop the final design, if I don't get called into work again at least.
@@CarvingisFun ok take your time, and i will be patient
Soweit ich weiß:Bei ALLEN Hohlbeiteln Stechbeiteln, Hobeln, Messern , Locheisen ist es sinnvoll BEIDE Seiten zu bearbeiten.
Probier's mal!
Dude are you ET? Longest fingers ever
Lols
Can the polishing compound applied to the strop dry out?
If left next to a heat source I can see it drying out, but I don't find it necessary to change mine but every 6 months or so.
