Benchmade just sharpened my knife for free a 940. I had a mirror edge on it like 10k grit. One of my lock bar springs broke. Took it in and the guy asked if I wanted it sharpened I said NO. Go back to pick it up and they destroyed the edge. The edge they put on didn't come close to shaving. I will never let them touch my knives again and I will never buy another Benchmade. There quality is about like a American Kershaw and they charge twice the price. I have a ganzo with a axis lock that has been flipped 10 times more than my 940 with no broken springs. Sorry to say that Benchmade is mostly just paying for a name.
I feel ya on that. I repair my knives and sharpen them myself. For those reasons. I feel like any industry lately (the past 5 or so years) has lost a lot of tradesman and craftsman to retirement and not enough of the younger gen to take their place. So what happens is quality control tends to slip and I think it's happening across the board in all manufacturing and customer service. Not that there aren't any good ones out there.. just a decline.

@@levvy001 Appreciate the reply. I agree about a lack of skilled tradesmen. Unfortunately Benchmade lost me as a customer. I also tried to get a griptilian blade warrantied during the same visit the spydie hole had a big trench in the outside of the hole from a machine operation when they cut the hole in the blade. They told me to pound sand. I factory defect in the blade and they wouldn't warranty it.
You should reverse the video format where the big screen is the knife and the small screen is you. Just a suggestion. Good stuff bro.

I just wanted to say that the real 3400 misfired because you flicked your wrist while you opened it, that is exactly how I purposely knock my OTFs off the track when I want to disengage it to open it. You’re making centrifugal force work against the spring just enough to make the blade not reach the interior lock. Any OTF will do that
I know what you mean.. but as much as I actually love that knife.. it misfires every few tries.. tbh. Thanks for commenting, you are right about about opening styles and habits.. they do determine if the knife will fire or not.
I know it's important to make mountains out of molehills when comparing $400 knives to $40 knives, but the bottom line is they both work the same way...chances are the internals are close to identical save for the sturdiness of the blade locks which the name brands seem to do much better with. Fit and finish on the high-end knives is generally better, but is is 10x better?
I really wish you had opened up the the knives to show the internals. It's clear BM has adopted the same basic internal firing system used in MT and unbranded clones, because it's certainly simpler, uses fewer parts, and holds the line on manufacturing costs over the Infidel design.
But at the end of the day, aside from bragging rights, what is the true "need" for an outrageously expensive OTF versus a so-called cheap one? I'm sitting here looking at a Grindworx Atomic that is clearly the same basic knife being sold all over the place, including under branded names for 5x more than it costs on GW, and it is one of the best DA OTF knives I've ever handled! Sure it's heavy due to the massive Zinc-alloy handle, and sure it uses "cheap" 440 steel (all steel is cheap, and all-steel is high-quality) and maybe some other 400 series steel for the internals, plus an outsourced, high-grade extension coil spring that hurls the blade out with unrelenting force! The blade has virtually zero play when locked. I'm sure it uses the same exact torx screws found on the high-end knives, and same exact belt clip and glass breaker mounted the same exact way. I've used it to cut this and that, fired it countless times, taken it apart to examine the sturdiness of the blade locks, and should I find myself having to rely on it in a street encounter I am confident it will do just fine...the added weight becomes a real advantage as it can be used much like a Kubotan without deploying the blade!
All modern OTF knives are manufactured using CAD-CAM, milling machines, blade stock is supplied in ready to cut thicknesses and is cut to near final dimension and shape by laser, arc, or water processes, as are the flat internal parts. Designed on computer, the dimensions are spot on and require little to no post-processing, so there's really no reason any OTF style knife must cost $300, or $500, and certainly not $1,700, or $4,000! That's just pure-D marketeering to make the common person self-identify as a post-modern Urban commando just waiting for the big event!
As far as "combat" weapons go a deadly stabbing weapon can be carved out of wood, or sawn out of Lexan, and absolutely 3D printed from a variety of "plastics" plenty sturdy enough to poke holes and even produce grisly wounds if made printed with serrated blade shapes! Will they hammer through a 2x4? Nope, but they'll stab to the hilt in any human...you know, the reason everyone thinks they NEED a high-dollar OTF!
The best carry knife in the world for SD is a length of PVC pipe heated and flattened with a slash-cut end, and some Dremeled notches down the "blade" length! Used in anger it would literally disembowel someone! Plastic.
I hear what you're saying. I own a few GW Zinc alloy 440 knives and they have their place. I have knives that are otf that I use for different levels of abuse all the way up to date night carry. But the points you made about " the bottom line ,at the end of the day" simply aren't true. First mountain out of a mole hill...
What if I'm in a life or death situation? Do I hope my Benchmade opens on point like it's clone counter part? Whether I'm in a fight, hanging over a cliff with my seat belt wrapped around my neck after an insane car wreck? I love my BM knives don't get me wrong, but for $400 smacks that steel better be right and sharp. That knife better open at least 10 times right out the box before it ftfs. Now at the end of the day the bottom line is, we collect these knives because we are knife guys that like cool shit... and if I want to make an easy fast weapon on the spot I'll pull out my debit card break it in half and start slitting throats. I'll enjoy my $10, $30, $100 , $300 and $400 dollar knives any way I can.

I have yet to buy a high dollar OTF, but in my book the DA OTF is just about the most handy pocket knife to have and carry, and I’ll tell you why.
The ability to get it out your pocket, opened, used, closed and back in your pocket one handed, SAFELY (without gymnastics)
is awesome.
(Just picture yourself on top of a ladder with one hand free)
So far, I like the clones as I don’t feel bad beating them up, but it IS tiresome having to constantly sharpen them up, so I just might get out there and try an Ultratech just for the steel.
You won't regret it brother, honestly I now have a benchmade shootout and couldn't be happier... beat it up and don't feel bad. Plus it holds an edge very well. Crew wear is no joke.

I’m figuring, as long as the specs are perfect I should be able to replace an OTF blade with one of my own making. I have a nice chunk of Damascus sitting around, and some 1095 as well.
sharpening one side only of daggers make them sharper. It's a matter of geometry; you can sharp at a lower angle by sharpening one side only.
Yeah, they need to work on that geometry
A lot of Emerson knives come with the chisel grind, just one side beveled. They say it makes it easier to sharpen. It seems like it may help penetrate better too.

Now for the record, I own several very expensive Benchmades. But I before I sold it, my Autocrat clone was extremely sharp out of the box. Crazy.

Uh, who is ripping off whom?? Benchmade has been contracting out their production for many years-all of their knives are built by the SAME facilities that are making these ‘fakes.’ The way the laws are (the laws pushed by big corporations like BM) is that you can have 98% of your production in China, then send the product to the U.S., literally tighten a few screws, and stamp ‘Made in USA’ on it. These knives probably cost $10 to make, but because they are BenchMades, they charge $190 for them.
The copyrights on many of BenchMade’s designs, has expired. So if these Chinese companies want to sell me a very good quality knife for 1/5 what BenchMade will charge me, I’m all for that.

Made in the USA and assembled in the USA are different and you're really only allowed a very small percentage of your product to be of a foreign source. I had a Microtech Combat Troodon that had a spring fail within about 4 months of ownership. When I sent it back to Microtech, it got stolen in the mail. I replaced it with a clone from DHGate and the clone had pretty much identical quality and except for one detail (read the end for that), would pass for genuine. The steel was almost for sure not M390, but the knife has been serving well for almost two years.
You can't tell the Microtech clone from a fit and finish standpoint. The tell is that the holographic emblem on the clone does not have the level of "Flake" effect that the genuine knife has. I have had three Microtech clones and all have had this same tell. Otherwise, they look and function identically to the genuine knives.

One is none and two is one. Always have redundancy of your files on separate drives. Glad you’re back. Another piece of advice when dealing with overlay clips in a video. At the start the video clap three times slow and loud. Then when you go into post use those three claps to sync both raw files. Then delete the claps before you export the video this will give you perfectly synced videos.

Great info! I agree about the scammers, and I don't think it's right to sell a clone as a real one. I personally am not so rich to afford a $500 knife and never have been, and happy with most of my clone purchases. I do buy clones and sell them at a markup to my friends, but AS CLONES ... I happen to live in California so otf knives are illegal and very hard to get, but serve as a good friend late at night, if you need to get scary when someone trys to rob you. It's happened to me a couple times already and having a superior knife to your aggressor has seemed to be efficient thus far... Keep it up man!

My $400 phateon dry fires usually after I've let it get full of pocket lint or wood chips from trimmng trees. But I have been looking into clones just to mess around with. Great video. Appreciate the video. Benchmade is my brand too.
Yeah man, I use rem oil to clean my knives and it works pretty good. Some guys use lighter fluid..
@@levvy001 I use Blue lube oil from Benchmade, it seems to work alright, but I never thought of lighter fluid. Interesting. I can tell you this, the steel on their upper tier knives is great. I have some I've still never sharpened. I use the phaeton everyday to cut rope, tape, tarps and the likes and it's still going strong. Keep doing the videos if you enjoy it, I'm subscribing. I've noticed that the date sticker on clones is usually glossy, and doesn't have a date on it. At least my fake-out was like that, also the warranty paper was folded wrong too. Other than that I was surprised that it actually came sharp, and weighed the correct ammount. It even has smooth action. Main thing I noticed was the blue anodized hardware was off on color , almost purple.

Great video, really useful information for who has no idea when they about to spend a couple of hundreds of bucks on a clone.
I personally don't have a problem with Wish or any other sellers selling clones, simply because I know a real one wouldn't have a price tag of 30 dollars plus shipping. But I do have a problem with the people who try to sell a clone as a real one.

I had a couple Microtech's lately here, brand new, that misfired repeatedly. So much so that I sent them back.
I'm glad that I now have a couple Microtechs that don't misfire at all. But for a while there I was getting pretty discouraged.

Great video tried to put some copper scales on a clone the liner screws seem to big on the clone as well as after disassembling was curious to see plastic washers in between the blade. Wondering if I can change those out to brass in the future. Was a great exercise it looks like my goal for the future is a original bugout. Maybe can make the copy Better? This actually instills more understanding of original design.

Yes, get the original bugout and it lines up better. I put aluminum scales on my real bugout from a clone and worked great. But putting scales made for a real benchmade on a clone with the clone hardware takes some modification.

I just received my autocrat from wish and it doesn’t seem to be as good quality as yours, the blade wobble is terrible, the edge of the blade has roles on the edge and has a very loud Ting in the spring and was just wondering if you had the link to the wish seller you purchased yours from.

I’m probably going to get a 940 clone. If I can figure out who’s got a good one (never bought anything from any of the direct from China online stores that are all over the internet ,so dk where to order from.w a knife or anything else. Couldn’t care less if it’s got a butterfly logo or not.just want to get the best knockoff and spend some time with it before possibly getting another expensive knife.from what I’ve seen after looking into it a little deeper, the Chinese stuff isn’t all bad stuff. Some even switch up the design a little bit and make a knife that is better in some ways,but keep the blade,balance,demotions & important parts about identical .. a good enough knife to actually use & enough like the one I think I want to help make that call. )I just very recently got a hankering for a axis lock or bar lock ect type of knife. 3 weeks ago or something. Never had one,never really noticed them . But since I have,the 940 keeps popping up as a favorite. So ,went to a local gun store that appears to be a authorized dealer. I didn’t ask,but they have a big nice looking BM glass display cases with the TM all over the place,back lit & all. The thing is, it is locked,there is a sales person kinda hanging over your shoulder when you’re trying to check out the knives. I get that. Some people don’t know how to handle knives and might drop them or mess them up in some way,put them back with finger prints or looking messy or something like that. Or maybe even try to steal one. With cameras everywhere ,especially in a gun store & a bunch of people with loaded guns on them,that would be about the last place I would expect a thief to try something like that..But who knows. People.?.?. I had stumbled on a clone video before looking at some of the knives in that BM case.1 single video & from what I saw they were selling some real ones and some fakes at around 1/2 price. I suppose they expect the customer to know what is too good to be true and what is not.& people should do their own research. I do. .I knew enough to spot a few real ones and some clones. There was customers who were waiting to check out ,so I told the guy thx and let him lock up. They also had a few display knives that were on a cable. They were not good examples & loose and all.+ cable was in the way of trying out the action. Any way. That’s what’s up. Usually prefer a drop point blade but the reason ppl like the 940 & the reason the guy made the 1st one has made me think i could use one. & there’s the current economy & inflation. I honestly need to go budget at the moment ..That’s the bottom line. Thx for the video though. . I like otfs too. have 1.a old ultratech with some cool features. .showed it to my boss years ago,he bought a infidel a cpl months later. I know that reverb feeling you were talking about. Felt a little cheap compared to my MT.

@@levvy001 My machinist & electrician Grandpa didn't have "blue Loctite" in 1940. And he helped build what won WW2. So it's good enough for some dinky OTF screw. I have gallons of paint. Just a "tip" from the past. This poor fisherman has got me a clone Microtech Glycon coming. Afterwards enough left for a few cases of beer. NOT BUD LIGHT, I drink PBR.

I just received one from wish for $34 . Best thing is it arrived late so I got full refund. Now, mine looks like an original. Benchmade marks and the D2 McHenry mark on opposite side of blade. It seems to work fine and is so far- well built. I know the blade is a bit slimmer but I can't afford the real thing so it's great in that respect. But I do think it's wrong for whoever made these to use a trademark name. That's totally not cool. And if this had to be used in a defensive manner it would probably break. I say this because the blade has a very slight jiggle, not solid.
Yes, I totally agree. Imo my clone would make a great edc. If they made a knife w/o using BM name and changed the profile a bit I would recommend this knife.

Another thing that's different about the clone boxes is that they tend to be really shiny. Even the edit labels tend to be shiny. True Benchmade boxes have more of a matte look to them.
👋, I need to look out for replicas when buying Jordans, now i need to do the same for knifes, 😆.noticed u said u paid 4x for the real one, but i have seen them clones for under 20$. , isnt the real one 400$ , thats alot more than 4x , what u paying for the clones, well i still haven’t pylled the trigger on a otf, i am in Massachusetts , needs to be 3 inches or less, do u have any recommendations, i have seen some nice mini otf, well great channel
Yes there are good otfs under 3" the Microtech utx 70 comes to mind.
And yes it's worth it in my opinion.
The steel for the blade and the craftsmanship along with the customer service which I've heard is stellar. Haven't had to use btw. Definitely do some research especially on what you're interested in buying.

I bought the crooked river larg crap in the box ! Then I bought the clone ! The clone was well finished the real one was not ( long pissed off list ) !
I don't know of anyone that sells them as real ! $200.00 for benchmade crap in the box !!! $50.00 for the well made usable clone !

I went full stupid on the wish clones and every one I have is exactly like you found. Clones are sometimes as good. Are the legit really worth it?
Imo, yes. You get better steel and other materials plus customer service. If they didn't make them to be clones but instead made their own versions I would totally rock them.
And still pay $70
Benchmade’s quality has gone to shit. My 2018 infidel is way better quality than a 2021 mode I just bought. Damn thing had burs up and down and the blade had a nasty twang sound. Returned it 😔

I've wondered that myself. A few videos back I changed my bugout scales over to the fakeout scales and they worked amazing. So good question. Since you asked I may do another swap video Since I'm not the only one interested.

Need drop of oil in the Benchmade my microtech fails every 4months or so mainly sitting in a condition one box the oil dries up we live in humid climates me being in clearwater florida microtech and Benchmade also use very strong springs compared to fakes hence the easy launch and retraction I have cheap firecracker I had for years that fires so nice compared to the microtechs and never fails lol but I also wouldn’t dare start stabbing car doors with it

As far as the edge is concerned yes, but typically there wouldn't be a matching bevel on the opposite side of the blade. The pagan has a totally flat plane blade with only a one sided grind as well. But yeah, let's call it a chisel grind. Thanks man. 🤘
i have a real bugout and a bugout clone....the clone has a very gritty feeling when closing, may just need cleaned but i have seen the same crap with other clones!
The clones clean up real nice and som 3000 grit sandpaper with remoil goes a long way. Love my bugout btw

I love benchmade but their otf knives are notoriously weak firing. I love my infidel but I know exactly why yours misfired. The spring system is so weak any momentum at all working against the momentum of the knife will cause it to misfire and ever your slight hand movement was enough to do it. Amazing and great knives but they really need to get their shit together as far as their firing system goes because yea for a $400-500 knife to have such weak firing is seriously disappointing especially since benchmade is one of my favorite companies.

Honestly, if it isn't from a certified dealer it's probably a fake. But measurements and blade edge right now are the dead giveaway.

What is you're thought bout people telling you owning or buying a clone knife makes you a criminal? Or what thoughts do you have about the idea people who buy clone knives should they be called criminals?
Good question, I'm in the middle of editing a video where I go into it a bit. But I think I'll do a video in the furniture where I lay down all my thoughts. But to give you a quick answer... the real thing is better and worth the money. As far as steel and customer service. Clones are fun and could be a very decent knife for the money. If they weren't counterfeit it would be a good deal. I don't have a huge problem with clones unless people buy them to sell as the real deal at real deal prices and no transparency. That's where Companies like Benchmade and Microtech lose money. IMHO
But I would fight anyone that call me a criminal for buying a clone or counterfeit. Good question
