Hudson Deck Review - Theory11 Playing Cards

- The Hudson deck was just recently released on www.Theory11.com after a pretty lengthy social marketing campaign that saw the tuck and jokers teased heavily across Instagram. The deck comes packaged in a matte mint green card stock tuck case that with a bronze foil ink. The design reminds me of the patina tones of bronze sculptures and is nicely embossed throughout.
The front of the box features the Hudson branding with the embellished H. Two corinthian style columns flank the design at either side, with a statue of a gryphon (a mythological cross between an eagle and a lion) in relief at the top of each pedestal. The bottom reads New York and behind the logo, drawn in perspective, is a representation of the factory home of the Hudson Playing Card Co., which of course, is the impetus behind this deck.
The Hudson’s are a mint green metallic ink on white card stock. Aside from the simplified coloring, the design is virtually unchanged from the tuck case.
The deck comes with two custom jokers. Identical. An image of a bearded man, in renaissance garb, sitting, legs crossed, on the ground. Spitting water like a fountain into the air and mouths of what look like two black ravens. The ace of spades is custom as well featuring a design that is highly reminiscent of the High Victorian deck. The monogram H is featured in the center, the top folded inward to fit within the spade pip. There’s a nice crown element at the top.
The rest of the cards are all bicycle standard with only the coloration being different. The red of the hearts and diamonds is more crimson and the courts see the inclusion of gold metallic ink.
Also included are the two typical theory11 ad cards.
As all theory11 decks in recent memory the cards are printed by the United States Playing Card Co. and as such handle magnificently.

I enjoy many decks from Theory11 such as: MailChimps,Monarchs etc but one that i prefer the most is Tycoons especially Ivory because i found out about them from a friend and the way that i saw him handling them was beautiful,so whenever i see them it reminds me of my friend.

My favorite Theory 11 deck, and overall, is the one that started my collection five years ago: the original Monarchs. I had to have them after watching Now You See Me.
My favorite Theory 11 deck of cards is the Patriotic deck. From the stylized pips and artwork to the tuck case with it's Eagles holding the American flag. I love the look and feel! On a plus, this deck came with a double backer for tricks! Another great video from this channel. Keep up the good work :)

Great work of showcasing how beautiful they are in this video! About my favorite theory11 deck, it's hard to pick just one but I'll go with High Victorian. Great stock and design. But Hudson would be a true competitor.

Great review. I'd say that since I'm so new to cards that this deck, the Hudson, would have to be my favorite Theory 11 deck because I don't know of any others... yet.
I love the Contrabands. The custom faces, the back design, the tuck case. I love everything about that deck.

I'm way late on replying but yeah man contraband are my favorite thus far as well. That followed by Jimmy Fallon, artisans, nph and green monarchs. I love the cust courts on the Fallon's and the back designs on both the artisans and nph. The green monarchs are just a beautiful classic/ classy deck.

Good morning GentlemanWake, hoping you and the loved ones are well, terrific review and I agree that Theory 11 decks often pale in comparison to the tuck boxes they come in, but the look of this deck (both the tuck box and the deck) is the most appealing to me, primarily because of the New York architecture that is so very obvious on the tuck box, everything about it screams NY (Manhattan kid born and raised), also the compass on the back to me is reminiscent of the Freemasons symbol (which calls to mind their ritual phrase "So mote it be", which seem very appropriate for the deck) ... as for the deck I think the pale Mint Green is a glaring opposite to the dark Mint Green color used on the tuck box and the Ace of Spades is one of the prettiest Aces I have seen ... hoping you all have a great week and as always thanks for sharing

Favorite Theory 11 deck hands down is the Artisan deck. The back features two letters AG that just so happen to be my initials. The deck was simply made for me...at least that’s what I tell myself.
I gotta go with the tycoon. It loosk really classy and the colors are on point. Glad you're growing :)
My favorite Therory11 decks are the Tycoons. I love that they decided to go with the Fournier styled court cards with the skin toned faces. Coming in a very close second are the Contrabands. They have a beautiful tuck case and extremely intricate backs, court cards and Aces.
Finally subbed. Your honest criticisms set you aside from many other deck reviewers (some of the cats who “receive decks to review”). I’m glad you gave this deck a swirly; I agree that T11 needs to either pimp it up a few degrees or make a less busy card design. It’s gettin stale over there; turn the film B&W & squint-you can’t tell em apart anymore.

High Victorian is my favorite! The details of the artwork are just amazingly on point, and if Theory 11 is used to putting out most of their decks in mono-colored back design, I'd say High Victorian's design will just surpass that underwhelm.

I'm a little different as my favorite T11 deck is the Union. Love JF's designs and I much prefer original courts. NPH would be a close second. Btw, I loved the added scene of the cards being dealt amidst the cardistry cuts.
My favorite Theory11 deck is probably the gold Rarebits, also I like your shirt.

My favourite deck is the one I have now, the white artisans. The seal was so nice i actually took it off the box, stuck it onto the Theory 11 ad card and then framed it.

Love the review as always my friend. I do own an array of TXI decks since they started selling them at my local Target, (I also make sure to hit up any Barnes & Nobles when I’m traveling) but in all honesty, the only one I’ve opened is the NPH deck as that one was a gift and to race my friend on who could solve the puzzle first. The rest are for the collection. So... NPH, like most others here. :)

Sadly I own no T11 decks, but when I do add them to my collection I plan on getting the Citizens deck. Looks amazing

Thank you for the well researched video. Especially appreciate the historical footnotes. If the card backs seem a little less than inspiring it may be due to the fact the box art is so difficult to live up to. Picking a favorite Theory 11 deck for me is somewhat akin to picking a favorite Beatle song, but if I had to I would probably say "In my Life", er, I mean Citizens. Given that I don't have all their decks, it isn't a fully informed opinion, and like all things "across the universe", it's subject to change.
Favorite Theory 11 deck is the White Artisan. Love the channel. Only downside of more subscribers is that there is less chance I win a contest!
I think your observations are spot-on. The case is amazing (do wish it had a bit of something; semi glossy (?) to help keep it staying lovely with time), but I too was a bit disappointed to see the cards themselves were pretty standard in design. They feel nice, shuffle and cut smoothly; very fine indeed- but I'd hoped the face cards in the least would contain some unique enhancements beyond the Ace of Spades. In fact, I bought Hudsons, Tycoons and others as gifts thinking they would be fancy in play and now I'm second guessing them a bit. :(
Hey Victoria. Thanks for watching and commenting. Well, I think they are definitely fancy enough especially for players used to the more standard Bicycle decks you'd find at a walgreens. But yes, I'd reccommend some of the decks by Kings Wild Project (especially the Tally-Ho no. 13s or any variation of those) and the Morai or Drifters deck for decks with classic feel but fancy execution. THanks again!

My favorite theory11 deck(s) is tied between the Citizens and the Black Artisans, as in both decks the cards match the tuck case colors. The White Regalias are one of my top 3 decks so I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about them! Also, since they are printed by Cartamundi it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on how they feel.

The theory 11 guys need to post this review in their product page. Your images are far superior than the images they have on the Hudson page.
Apart from the top 10 tuck case video you should also make a top 5 decks as a whole package video. Judging the decks based on price, tuck case, handling and design.
And may be a behind the scene video in the future as to how you make these reviews.
My favourite t11 deck is the high Victorians. Simply because of the tuck case. Although it too has a one color scheme for the card backs but the back design has got so much detail that u start appreciating the back design once you accept that its in one color
My favorite is the 'Product RED' one. It is seen from its simplicity that it is created to help people, not just for fun.
By far the monarchs but the mystery deck is a really cool idea! Leave it wrapped up and not know or do you rip it open?
I only got the medallions (a little bit disappointed) but I got the chance to feel the monarchs and I have to say they’re absolutely amazing! Also my favourite cards right now are the white regalia so I’m excited for the next episode!

I have to go with the classic monarchs too many memories with them and they are just a perfect deck, amazing handling, perfect stock (form me it's personal preference) and all in all just a beautiful design and tuck case
The monarchs are definitely decks that I love but their Hudson decks are simply amazing as well

I learned a lot about the deck. Your details are just great. Did Hudson get eventually acquired by USPCC? I guess I need to research them a bit. It is hard to disagree with you about Theory 11 making awesome tuck cases and wanting on their cards. I too wish they would customize their courts and pips. Maybe sometime, but that is what they do. My favorite Theory 11 deck? I guess it is the High Victorian. I know it has text and design rather than faces for courts (something I don't like), but the tuck is just jaw-dropping. The line work is brilliant with so many details everywhere. Got to love it.

The monarchs are an easy choice, but something about them really sticks with me, specifically the red monarchs. Overall however all the theory 11 decks are pretty good in my opinion, the tuck cases look good when displayed on a shelf.
The tycoon is my favorite. It's already in that hot, hot stack.

My favorite Theory11 deck is the 5th & Laurel deck. They are quite different from regular Theory11 cards, but they look very nice.

Had they done the back design the way you suggested the this would easily be one of if not their top deck! Maybe they should hire you to help take thier cards to the next level of luxury! I for one would be willing to pay a little extra to have cards with such additions. I have a lot of Theory 11's cards and don't really have any complaints about any of them but I have to say, ever since I got the High Vics (thanks to your review) I find myself continuing to go back to them. I have compared their feel to some of the other decks and side by side they feel identical except for when I start working with them. They seem to have more snap and a faster flow. I don't know. Probably my imagination, but I do keep picking them up. I love all the little hidden details in the High Vics. Something fun to do is take a magnifying glass or a jewelers loop and take a closer look at the tuck box and the deck. It gets even more amazing at the level of detail they really put into that deck. I am hoping that the Hudson deck as the same level of detail and jems hidden in plain sight. Well, plain sight if you have a magnifing glass! Great review as always!
I do love the puzzle in the NPH deck but the white artisans are so beautiful.

I think this deck actually has become my new Theory11 favorite because the bronze looks to work so well with the teal and the color combo is unlike any other deck I can recall. Plus, I love the Ace of Spades and Joker designs :) I am though a bit disappointed in how light the backs appear - I'd prefer something more striking with a bit more contrast that I agree could have been achieved with the addition of black and/or bronze as mimicked from the tuck :/

The red monarchs by far are my favorite deck. So elegant and beautiful. I actually prefer the V1 red monarchs that they no longer print.

My favorite deck is the Artisan Black Edition with the Red Victorian a close second. Out of the tuck cases, the red High Victorian is my favorite. I wish they would have had the back design more than just red though.

Hmm choosing my favourite theory 11 deck isn’t easy but at a push I could narrow it down to two, for looks alone I would say the citizens both tuck case and the card backs are beautifully ornate and intricate but I also love my Madison players because they were his first decks and kind of started the whole Madison brand, I may be influenced by having been at the meet up with him in Leeds yesterday and seeing what a great down to earth guy he is in person but all that aside I really do like them because of their simplistic but elegant design and cool marking system.

If I wanted to get a Theory11 deck it would be either the Citizens or the Monarchs. You're right that Theory11 should spruce up their back designs!

I like almost every decks by Theory11. My favourite is still the monarch though. That said, I love the tuck case color on the hudson!
While I find that most T11 decks have something interesting going on, which is why I continue to collect them, something about the Artisans just sings to me. It's the way they feel as well as look. I know, I know, most T11 decks from that era were produced using the same card stock and finish, and yet Artisans have managed to somehow get the exact right amount of ink coverage or something to just be a joy to handle.
So far, the medallions are my personal favorite of the theory 11 decks
