I thinks this format needs some kind of "the joker", that wins by dying first. So the bandits can fake being the joker and do damage to the king at the start..
@@IamAllano The way my group plays is that there is a Jester and only one bandit. The bandit wants to kill everyone but the king. We also have a rule that if the king kills the guard first, then the king loses. This stops the king from randomly killing anyone and needing to make better decisions.
Loving seeing the boys progress in game knowledge, Chase didn't have to be corrected about the double usage of shadow in the warp @57:40 he noted it himself before it mattered and fixed it. Nothing wrong with making mistakes in MTG but the ability to detect and rectify them yourself shows real improvement. Great vid!
Not sure if you guys will read this (or care), but hear me out. The usurper should have the objective to be the last man standing. The king and his knight win by killing the bandits and the usurper. The userper benefits by pretending to be the knight until he is one on one with the king, and then defeating them to win. It is a role that requires the longest gameplay to win, but it also is sought after because they conduct the craziest shenanigans. If you want to include the monarch mechanic, you can have the king become monarch on their second upkeep (asuming the king goes first). Also, if you kill a bandit or usurper, you are rewarded by drawing 3 cards (or some similar boon). If the king kills the knight, they discard their hand as punishment (or something smilar). These rules adjustments shift players incentive with their decisions because they add clearly defined consequences. Idk if you guys will play this variant again. I hope you do. This is a way of play that I think is very interesting, and useful for play groups that tend to have extra people that would rather play than be a spectator for an hour or more. Love this video and the goofy gameplay that you guys provide!
Alter of the Brood triggers off of all permanents including lands. Also Chase's enchantment pinged everyone for 2 damage on only the 1st non creature spell cast each turn.
@@TheGroog so each player is a branch of a 5 branches star, and you have to kill the opposite branches, players next to you are kind of your allies, but they have to kill each others because they are opposite of each others, it opens some pretty fun politics and stuff
Havent seen the episode yet but Chase if you like the tyranid deck you should absolutely switch commander to Magus Lucea Kane. It is a bonkers x spells enabler which a lot the tyranids are. Edit: if you run untapping cards it goes real hard and a lot of fun
I wish I had friends like this to play with. Love your guys channel and best MTG Commander games by far, non of the scripted BS from other channels. Also more shock collar commander, ramp it up.
Love this for 5 man Commander! I totally agree there needs to be 1 more role so theres a hint of unknown and I think a Jester roll would fit very well trying to get themselves killed first!
31:49 this feels like the youngins talking about how much fun playing war is, while grandpa (me) sits there with flashbacks from his time in the trenches (war of the spark standard)
Shadow in the warp only triggers for the first of each type per turn, so the card was doing way more damage than it should and reduced multiple spells in a turn, which it's not supposed to do. I guess it's just kingly privilege, lol
Emperor with 6 is a good alternate game mode too. Its 3 v 3 each side has an emperor in the middle and a lieutenant on each side. The Lt can only attack the player adjacent to them so they have to take the Lt across from them out before you can start attacking the emperor. Plus the emperor can pass the Lt's blockers and attackers on his turn or save them for himself.
Probably new to mtg, so inexperience. At 12:05 for example he plays a forest and then casts his commander Bill instead of casting it first and then play his land for the landfall trigger.
This is a really cool idea for a gamemode, but it seems impossible for the bandits or usurper to win because everyone wants to be percieved as the Knight... gotta come up with something that allows them to attack the King and Knight without immediately revealing themselves as villains.
Could add a “Advisor” or “Kings hand” role which would be known information alongside the king where if a player falls under a certain health threshold the advisor knows that players role but can’t tell anybody and can only act on the information, to make it more of a 3v3
This sounds like a card name called BANG! One of my favourite card games during my childhood. Still play it with my relatives when we meet. Idk if there is any other soul alive that has played this game but damn do I have some great memories with that one Also finally seeing one of you play a wh40k deck really makes me happy
The bandits actually could of won at the end. Ryan's Jeska's will should of resolved 3 times from being copied twice which means 24 mana for comet storm so 21 damaged kicked would be 42 to Chase exactly
Never heard of this Commander format but seems interesting. You could also try the Planechase thingy at some point. Also, wasn't Charlie's board empty when he played F-Bag so he should've sacrificed the F-Bag also.
Yes I think it could use a game rule* each player must attack each turn, for each land played each turn it pays tax of 1 colorless mana to the king, or the kings deck is a wall deck and has no way to attack since it’s the only role known and has to barter with the other players
Having watched the video completely I want to share my thoughts on this format and give some (hopefully) constructive criticism to help this format flourish: 1. from a baseline I think having 3 "evil" roles and 2 "good" roles makes this unbalanced and should lead to either bandits or the usurper winning every game by rolling over the king. The boys in this game definitely played this game way more passive than it needed to and I think realistically past the early game once Krenko gets going, ganging up and killing the king just ends the game in a few turns regardless of what Chase and Charlie did. 2. To remedy this I would do one of 2 things, both focused on reducing the "2v3" problem and introducing 'neutral' rolls like Jester or Survivor (if anyone has played ToS think of those roles) that have different win conditions outside of what happens to the king (jester dying first, survivor living until final 2 players). If you wanted to keep to 5 rolls total and always have 1 of everything I would just replace the 2nd bandit with the Jester and it would make the game more interesting. If you want to take this format further adding a 2nd neutral role such as Survivor would lead to a larger variety of games to happen with there being a chance to not have a role like knight or usurper. 3. In the case that you add more than 5 roles, rolling a die to decide who gets king would lead to less rerolling. The king is always public knowledge anyway so it doesn't affect the game. 4. Considering creating a specific themed deck for the king to play that has a larger than usual amount of removal and pillowforty type effects (ghostly prison, propaganda, etc). The first commander that came to mind to me was 'The Council of Four', azorius deck that makes tokens and draws cards and can even generate more value if the knight plays into it. I enjoyed this video a lot and would like to see more of this and other alternative formats like this in the future. This is very quickly becoming one of my favourite Magic channels to watch
Another variant game other than this or Star Magic, is Secret Partners. Deal out a Mountain, Red Spell, Island, Blue Spell and an Artifact. Those with lands flip them face up, they now know who is not on their team and can swing at each other. The Red and Blue spell players know who their secret partners are and can help them as they see fit. The Artifact is the Lone Wolf and has to win just like in Kingdoms. You can choose to flip up cards as players are knocked out or not. Teams win if even 1 person survives until the end, if both teammates are knocked out that team loses. Doing it this way incentivizes attacking and still some politics (lands know they are against each other, face down cards also know they are against each other; only attacking across those lines could reveal information). Of course the game is ruined if one face down player verbally reveals what card they have, so try not to be that person.
I think if there is a monarch mechanic with being the king on top of the extra health. But they are alone.the others are in teams of two for the other 4 lands; (u)surper with a (b)andit and conquerer with a knight. (Idk of a relevant name with a color but it would be nice) and it can be a 6 person game if you include wastes as a true wildcard just wants the king dead or kings ally
I thinks this format needs some kind of "the joker", that wins by dying first. So the bandits can fake being the joker and do damage to the king at the start..
Nah, someone just needs to openly say "i am the bandit" and go for a king early instead of wasting 95% of the game killing each other with 0 info.
@@IamAllano Yea, can't they just team up with the Usurper and make it a 3v2? Why would they even need to hide?
Jester role!

Could be the Swamp as well, very fitting. Could bring it up to a 6 player format?
“Oh boy, new Skill Check! What new commanders are we seeing today?”
*Bristly Bill appears*
“Oh. Well.”
Best commander channel hands down! The variety in games is amazing!
Yeah, i just love the variety of bristley bill and 3/4 other commanders
Ryan is just the goat, I live vicariously through him
Such a wholesome guy
🥵🥵🥵
Trueee
41:49 Arron has the biggest Freudian slip admitting his role and NO ONE NOTICED
He said that he thought Ryan was the knight like 20 min into the video. It was pretty established he was a bandit early on😂
Charlie and Matt get so heated at eachother lmao 😂
3 things will forever be true, death, taxes, and Aaron always playing bristley bill
They were so concerned with being found out as not being the knight that they never even tried to win.
The dynamic between the swarm lord being the king an being protected by the BUG GOD is a great coincidence.

That scarab print is beautiful omg

@@Equisitte Thank god for proxies
@Equisitte yea, those are called invocations or incantation I think?
Charlie is right. Matt's logic about him being the night then saying any three of us over here could be the night makes no sense.

My GOAT Matt's got this one for sure
Fr Matt’s the goat
Bandit hits the King for 13 damage... King later asks him "were you the Knight?" (Facepalm)
Yeah what kind of knights is he hanging around with?
BRISTLY BILL IS BACK
I built a bristly bill deck because of them lmao
bristly bill is the real king here
Alter of the Brood triggers off of all permanents including lands. Also Chase's enchantment pinged everyone for 2 damage on only the 1st non creature spell cast each turn.
Charlie kicked butt with that scarab god deck
5 player commander games usually take a long time, im glad there's a format that kind of accounts for that and makes it a bit more interesting to play
also an assassin role or something that wants to be the last player alive
One way I play is you can only attack the 2 people across the board from you until it’s 4 people, then play 4 player but it’s so much faster
My favorite to play is "star" when we are 5 (without color restrictions)
@@urgrim1657 ooo whats that?

I love the "i have one mana open, am not gonna play anything more but also don't pay the one" move. It's very royal
also pretty funny of Matt to say "i think his deck is better than ours" after letting charlie draw like 25 cards

Aaron spoiling what he is by saying "the other" and he knew it and turned bright red haha 41:30
hope skill check plays more kingdoms commander! and maybe even with 6 players next time!
Did you call? Oh, different Kingdoms. >< Great episode, maybe we will have to try this variant sometime too.
This was awesome! Will be fun to see another!
Matt said "magic is my safe space" and I felt that.
This was a great group in this video, a lot easier to watch
This game mode is awesoime and I would love to see more.
Combining Town of Salem and Magic is actually such an insanely good idea WE NEED THAT FORMAT 😭😭
Matt really hit the "Nonononono, waiwaitwaitWAIT!" at the end there lol
Its so funny how fast they call everyones roles in the beginning
If you guys are doing more variants of commander, I beseech you to do treasure cruise simply for the chaos it can cause by going digging for treasure
