i think it's more to do with he is the doctor's lesser but also his equivalent to the Martians to what the doctor is to the other timelords a war hero and war criminal scary enough to make whole planets back down so the doctor understands that while he may be arguably smarter then him he is actually at a disadvantage once schaldak gives up the chance of rescue because the doctor won't go all out and schaldak will happily as he thinks he is alone like the doctor is but without anyone to care for unlike the doctor who had humanity. so it's basically the meeting of nearly equals but one is holding back out of regret for past choices and the other is going all force forward because he is suicidal
I think that's the best thing, when game recognizes game, a one man army realizing another one man army. The Daleks? Threatening, but not terrifying. This Martian dude who has single handedly vanquished an entire herasy by himself, and survived unimpeded? Now that's a real challange

That’s the best thing about 11. He’s putting on a front during most situations like this, and it all comes crashing down when he’s scared. This is something that 15 can’t seem to get a hold of though, but hopefully he will later on

Cold War was such an underrated episode when it came out but I’m glad it’s getting the love it deserves now I love that they don’t portray the Russian soldiers as bad guys but victims of war. Same to the ice warrior obviously. This episode was so good at humanizing the Russian soldiers that I completely forget that they are even Russian soldiers. Hands down the best immersive doctor who episode I’ve ever experienced.
Apparently, him taking his armor off was considered the most dishonorable thing you could possibly do as a Mars soldier, and he did that after he thought his people had abandoned him.
I love when they bring back the classic low-budget looking costumes and keep the original looks because of how iconic they are. The Martian armor looks pretty much identical to how it looked when the Second Doctor encountered them. My favorite example of this is still the cloth-faced looking cybermen because of how it was recontextualized. Those weren’t cheap robot masks, they’re cloths covering the mangled, disfigured, and lobotomized faces of the humans who were taken apart and put back together in order to be “upgraded”.
Imagine being stuck somewhere like a submarine with a creature like the ice warrior and can’t get out. It would be terrifying, so if you think about it, that soldier taser him did it out of fear
I love moments like this where all but one character doesn't understand, but that one person is FREAKING THE HELL OUT. It's especially impactful when that one character is usually unphased by even the most outlandish events.
The face the doctor made when he heard skaldak. He immediately knew not to make an enemy because the doctor was the only thing protecting the humans from skaldak. But skaldak wouldn't hold back while the doctor would so not to harm the humans. It was two one man armies against each other. One protecting vs. one with nothing to lose. Who would win that fight and who would lose.
