      Couldn't disagree more strongly, Melo had his best years in Denver. The Knicks did squat in his years there. And it's not a question of obligation. Melo completely turned the Nuggets franchise around from a perennial garbage team into regular winning and playoffs every year. He handled the trade situation with class and by going via trade instead of free agency the Nuggets got a huge haul from the Knicks including a draft pick that became Jamal Murray. The Nuggets owners have been petty. They should have kept the #15 so they could retire Melo's number and given Jokic another number so his jersey could eventually join Melo's in the rafters here.

    @TheEastside661 8 месяцев назад +2

    I really do not think that Denver gave Jokić the #15 jersey in hopes that it would wipe out or diminish Carmelo Anthony’s legacy in Denver. Jokić was the 41st overall pick in his 2014 draft, expectations for draftees that far down are usually faint. Having said that, when Carmelo Anthony departed from Denver in 2011, I do feel like Nuggets administrators should have made the #15 permanently inaccessible to any other player. The number should have been informally retired after Carmelo’s departure and then formally retired after Carmelo’s retirement from the NBA. I think the fact that Denver’s ownership allowed for ANY other player not named Carmelo Anthony to wear the #15 for the Nuggets post February 22nd, 2011 was deliberately done to irritate Carmelo. Denver executives clearly did not like the way Carmelo forced his way out of Colorado so that he could get to his preferred location of New York City, giving the #15 to ANY other player who wanted it was their way of being spiteful, it just so happened that Nikola Jokić was the guy who asked for it but I think that Denver decision makers would have given it to anyone who wanted the number. I think that Nikola Jokić accepted the number simply because it was available, not spite on his part towards Carmelo Anthony, had #15 not been available, I think that Jokić would have gladly settled for another one.

    What’s the problem with just retiring both number 15, Melo deserves his jersey to be up there n the rafters just like the joker. Melo did his thing in Denver when they drafted him in 03 . The nuggets weren’t nothing before Melo got there wasn’t even irrelevant. Mind you yes the joker is doing his thing kinda surpassed him with the Denver nuggets. I believe Melo done more for the nuggets than the knicks just my opinion. I hate the fact that our people try to diminish Melo legacy like he wasn’t a player to be reckoned with in his era yes he didn’t provide a championship but he still was a killer on the court. Nikola Jokic's jersey was #15 since he was drafted in 2014. If Jokic wasn't remotely close to the success he is today, Melo wouldn't be making a big deal about this at all. And it wasn't like the Nuggets were fortune tellers who could accurately predict Jokic's meteoric rise and value to the franchise. They recognized his potential, and then things panned out in everyone's favor.
    I'd rather see both #15's up on the Denver rafters, having grown up in Denver and admiring Melo, while taking pride in the championship Nuggs we have today, led by Jokic.
    Accr. to Sporting News:
    "Jokic wears No. 15 for the most Jokic reason ever. According to The Athletic's Nick Kosmider, Jokic chose the number when he was on a youth team in Serbia. He was the biggest kid on the team and No. 15 was the biggest jersey available."

    Melo is an NBA icon, shit, even as a kid in a country side little town I clearly remember my cousins having his posters on their walls and his NBA live Cover. Melo is a future HoF. Melo will always be remembered by the Denver fans because they are going to acknowledge that someone who did some great things for their organisation, regardless of how it ended, has been inducted into the HoF and that is a part of not only basketball history but also the History of the Nuggets and Melo’s career. This whole jersey nonsense is ridiculous. To imply the Nuggets owe him something is ridiculous. He was made a millionaire multiple times over by the Nuggets and he gave the nuggets his skills in return. Given the racial undertones that surrounded Jokic last season this also came off as a “They gave the white boy my jersey number so they can erase me!” Type of argument which is also ridiculous. If Jokic came into the league and crashed out in 2 seasons Melo wouldnt have said “How dare the Nuggets give my jersey number to this bum!?”. There are many players who had significant impacts on franchises across the league who will never have their numbere retired because that is reserves for the top of the top or someone seriously significant to the org in the event of a death or tragedy.

    Skip to 5:54 if you want to listen to the Jokic/Melo talk instead of SAS ego rambling about himself

      Me too, but their tandem was short lived. If AI came to Denver in 04-05 he and Melo would gotten out of the first round together and maybe AI gets his number retired in Denver too had he played 3-4 or 5 seasons there, he was their year in a half

    This is an unique situation. While I understand why Melo would say something, he has to accept that Jokic has simply accomplished more than him. He brought a title to the city, won multiple MVPs, great ambassador of the team, etc. There's levels to this.

    Thank you Stephan A the Nuggets had no ill intentions either.
    1. Anthony Rudolph got number before Jokic after Melo.
    2. No one including Denver could have ever dreamed a 41st pick 2nd rounder would he in conversations as an all timer.
    3. Jokic wore the number 15 as a kid.
    4 your right the Nuggets owe him nothing the number will be retired in Jokic honor!

    Jokic surpassed Melo at this point.

      He has already done that around 3 or maybe 4 years ago

      @@VanessosIliop.05 I agree. Jokic surpassed Melo when he won his first MVP, case closed.

    The ironic thing is there had recently been momentum in the Nuggets diehard fanbase to reconnect with Melo, for the team to reconnect and get on a more positive footing with him. For everyone to focus on his years with the Nuggets and not his forcing a move out of Denver. But he has just blown all that up.
