Live from Wimbledon - Day 2

  • It was an emotional day at Wimbledon as Marketa Vondrousova was beaten in the first round and revealed that the pressure and nerves of being the defending champion were too much. Catherine, David and Matt talk a lot about that and get to know her opponent, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who played superbly and has an epic tattoo. Before all that, Andy Murray withdrew from the singles, leaving the pod team feeling a mixture of sadness and relief. He was replaced on Centre Court by Jack Draper who did his best Murray impression over five sets. Elsewhere, there's analysis of impressive first round wins (for different reasons) for Iga Swiatek and Novak Djokovic, a tough but familiar loss for Andrey Rublev, a statement performance from Jelena Ostapenko, and much more.
The Tennis Podcast will be live, every night, throughout Wimbledon, with the podcast available afterwards.

Oh Draper is the tennis player singing 500 miles to an unphased Andy Murray, okk I like him!

I am Polish but I loved Andy Murray his entire career. He was always in this big 4 but because he was playing during probably the best and most competetive men tennis time in history he did not win as much as he could if he would be born a little bit earlier. My biggest admiration comes however from Andy's win of Olympics in 2012 in London. He was able to bare huge pressure and win with Federer Olympic's final. I love this story!

Murray - Federer at Olympics, that was a great match and Andy's heart was all in.

It’s nice to hear these reasonable polite knowledgeable folks talk about tennis. Sure beats a caffeine’d out John McEnroe randomly ranting about nonsense.

Shouldn't we view Vondrousova's Wimbledon win much the same as Raducanu's US Open? A very much non-elite player who won a tournament where the draw broke unimaginably in her favor, and all the top players were beaten by others? Yes, they will always have that one GS victory. But would it be surprising if they never made another GS semifinal? I would be happy to be proved wrong, but aside from their one miracle each, don't they come across as no better than average players?

Wow, you said everything I've been thinking. Very well explained. 👍🏼 I would also 'kind of' put Barbora "big-4" Krejcikova alongside those 2 with her unexpected RG win (although she had a few good results in other tournaments since then, which makes her an outlier in this group). To be fair, I also thought the same about Rybakina: "that was so incredibly lucky... she's not winning another one."

@@johncooper4187 Of course not. It is just an opinion in the moment that it happens. There is no value in it. If history confirms it, then it is just an interesting coincidence.

@@iphar Rybakina seems different to me. Her technique on her serve, volley and forehand is at a higher level than the other top players, and she has a winning record against Swiatek. Her issues are health and movement/athleticism. She may not win another GS, but IMHO it won't be because she isn't an elite tennis player.

I was thinking of the 1991 Wimbledon semi too David. Stefan Edberg lost the match to Stich in 4 without losing his serve 😭 he got the 1 break of serve in the match!!

One of the best matches of Day 2 of Wimbledon 2024 was the Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Taro Daniel R1 match. Such beautiful grasscourt tennis from Stef. 55 winners in a 3-set match from Tsitsipas. Taro played very well too.

Sad about Vondrousova. It does really show you the pressure that Emma has faced. That press conference in 2022 when Emma had a baseball cap down low. Alcaraz also froze from nerves in the 2023 RG semi final. Perfectly normal. Hope Marketa finds her form again, she has a very interesting game.
