@@JonCrombe if he cancels it immediately then the protoss wont invest more minerals in building cannons there. He's trying to get him to invest more before canceling so protoss loses more minerals.

I was wondering what the point of the base on the other side of the map was -- it mostly didn't seem to be doing anything. Lower worker count + base on your own side of the map seems to have done the trick. One bit of advice from a platinum-level Zerg: When spawning an overlord, ALWAYS ALWAYS decide where you want it to rally when you create it. It would have saved you so much grief in these games if you'd rallied the overlords somewhere safe when spawning it.
The main problem is you need to have more skill than your opponent to win a canon rush. That's why so many people struggle with it even if they know how to counter it.
Game 6 was so bad :(, spread your creep, pool energy on the queens, quit wasting minerals on an expand. Harstem your mining far to much gas, you don't need more than 4-5 ravengers, you really should pull off gas after you have them just build more queens and lings or roach.
this remembers me definition of insanity... like no mass workers pull, no mass spine crowlers, no taking third to use it of more production for defense at home, no defense at home with proxy hatch and no nydus....

Sure, here’s a detailed explanation on how to defend against a cannon rush as Zerg in StarCraft 2: How to Defend Cannon Rush as Zerg: Scout Early: Send your Overlord towards the opponent’s natural expansion or the edges of your own main base. At around the 12 supply mark, send a Drone to scout around your base perimeter to look for any suspicious Probe activity. Identify the Cannon Rush Quickly: If you spot a Probe in an unusual location and see Pylons being built, it’s likely a cannon rush. Look for hidden Pylons around your base or natural expansion. Pull Drones to Deal with the Probe: Use 2-3 Drones to chase and kill the Probe to prevent further construction. Targeting the Probe directly is critical as it stops the rush entirely if there's no backup Probe. Prioritize Building Cancellations: If Cannons are being built, focus Drones on canceling Pylons or Cannons that are close to completing but not protected yet. Avoid losing Drones unnecessarily-only pull what’s needed. Expand Away from the Rush: If the cannon rush denies your natural or main, consider taking another base far away (even at your third or fourth location). Roach Warren Response: If the rush completes and there are Cannons, drop a Roach Warren and build a few Roaches to push out. Roaches can outrange Cannons and destroy Pylons. Spine Crawlers if Needed: In extreme cases, Spine Crawlers can be used for defense. Use them to push towards Cannons or hold choke points. Adapt Your Build Order: If the rush is delayed but persistent, build Queens and Zerglings. Queens have good range and can assist in breaking Pylons. Focus on speedlings to outmaneuver static defenses or harass the Protoss base. Macro While Defending: Don’t overcommit to Drone pulls or defense at the cost of falling far behind in economy. Transition to your normal strategy after neutralizing the threat. Creep Spread and Vision: Spread creep around your main and natural to gain better vision. This will make it harder for the Protoss to sneak additional structures. Harstem, if you’re reading this: We appreciate the content! Hopefully, this advice lines up with what you'd recommend or expect. Cannon rushes may be the bane of ladder games, but there’s nothing better than clutching out a solid defense! 💪
Creep queens and 2-3 spines would be my strat. Use that forward hatch money on those and reclaim the nat plus transfuse as a form of zerg shield battery.
I REALLY enjoyed that one! The thought process the trail and error. Great video. But, what if he cannons the 3rd? He haphazardly attacked it with a Stalker at a very late point.
around 42:00, probably pull out of gas (at least 3 out since you had 6 mining) to get the 2 base mineral saturation faster, then pure speed lings are better vs stalkers
I feel the approach at the start could win if refined some more. It feels like the roaches should be used as a meatshield in the beginning instead of being morphed into ravagers right away after getting 3 ravagers for the small skirmishes down the ramp and if proxying, one needs 4 lings or 2 roaches there so that the cannon rusher needs a cannon there or a unit? I feel like that could have worked out for harstem with some small adjustments, even though the third base helps a lot of course.
amazing games. My starcraft 1 brain tells me sunkens (for you spines) would make your life easier as well. Good job well done. was hilarious to see the full hero story ark, from the bottom, to on top. I think you need mutas to force homeward bound retreats and spines to turtle. Remember, evo chambers are basically free, they dont need to actually research upgrades to be useful, they have been the staple of spines since wings of liberty when marauders could kill spines but not spines behind evo chambers due to being out ranged. and even in sc1 they where a very popular wall structure. Similar to depot bunker, the evo chamber is very crunchy and cheap. As long as you have 1 or 2 hatcheries down stairs, you should feel less un safe, simply get 3 spines and see how it feels, see if you like it, when those stalker counts more then 6 you need to think about more lings, but also get lurkers, since lurkers own stalkers in special moments like blinks. Especially when they can hide behind an evo chamber wall. Well done amazing micro you ravager those ravager real good. Perhaps all in banelings in batches of 6 or 7? to gain momentum? or to give more space? give the retreating lings and cool downed ravagers something to put between them and the counter attacking stalkers? during your stutter steps backwards? before you go forwards again? sick games Remember, you want to keep some roaches as non ravagers, since ravagers have less health then roaches, and are alot more expensive, so use the cheap roaches to tank for the 7 ravagers and build up your bulk instead of just pure ravager.

Targeting the Probe directly is critical as it stops the rush entirely if there's no backup Probe.
Prioritize Building Cancellations:
If Cannons are being built, focus Drones on canceling Pylons or Cannons that are close to completing but not protected yet.
Avoid losing Drones unnecessarily-only pull what’s needed.
Expand Away from the Rush:
If the cannon rush denies your natural or main, consider taking another base far away (even at your third or fourth location).
Roach Warren Response:
If the rush completes and there are Cannons, drop a Roach Warren and build a few Roaches to push out.
Roaches can outrange Cannons and destroy Pylons.
Spine Crawlers if Needed:
In extreme cases, Spine Crawlers can be used for defense. Use them to push towards Cannons or hold choke points.
Adapt Your Build Order:
If the rush is delayed but persistent, build Queens and Zerglings. Queens have good range and can assist in breaking Pylons.
Focus on speedlings to outmaneuver static defenses or harass the Protoss base.
Macro While Defending:
Don’t overcommit to Drone pulls or defense at the cost of falling far behind in economy. Transition to your normal strategy after neutralizing the threat.
Creep Spread and Vision:
Spread creep around your main and natural to gain better vision.
Nice chatgpt
Very unimpressed that chatgpt didn't suggest the one base swarm host follow-up
Creep queens and 2-3 spines would be my strat.
Harstem, can you do IODIS for these games?
Alternate title: “printf swept me in a best of 11, then THIS happened!”
around 42:00, probably pull out of gas (at least 3 out since you had 6 mining) to get the 2 base mineral saturation faster, then pure speed lings are better vs stalkers
bro you not killing that pylon drove me insane. Why?! haha
Defending a Zerg base against Stalker:
I was like, get some Spines.
"printf", pretty sure this guy is a programmer by day lol
amazing games.
Perhaps all in banelings in batches of 6 or 7? to gain momentum? or to give more space? give the retreating lings and cool downed ravagers something to put between them and the counter attacking stalkers? during your stutter steps backwards? before you go forwards again? sick games
Remember, you want to keep some roaches as non ravagers, since ravagers have less health then roaches, and are alot more expensive, so use the cheap roaches to tank for the 7 ravagers and build up your bulk instead of just pure ravager.
How to beat a cannon rusher:
- Lose 7 times against a cannon rusher
- Try to snipe him
- Befriend him
- ???
