Thank your for posting this extract from one of my favorite operas!
If I remember correctly, this production dates from the mid-seventies, and it does not show its age. Otto Schenk was a stage director who could get wonderful acting performances out of singers. Gundula Janowitz is absolutely charming, and so is Bernd Weikl, who - perhaps more so than Janowitz - was a natural born actor.

This is up there with Liebestod as one of the most beautiful finales ever written. And this production is simply perfect.

I think that GundulaJanowitz had to have been gifted with one of the greatest voices of the 20th. century... and moreover, one perfect for Strauss. This opera "Arabella" is a jewel, and though GundulaJanowitz' voice is without parallel, please try to see, captured on DVD, AshleyPutnam''s rendition (Glyndbourne) of this same role, the final scene of which, brings me to sobs every single time. I think that many might seem to dismiss "Arabella" as slight... one of Strauss' lesser works, but this is a mistake, as a great life-lesson is taught here; anyone who has found the "right one" but finds the relationship has stumbled into a chasm, this opera... especially with its last scene, will make everything clear. And... AshleyPutnam is exquisite.
