I've never thought of you guys being lazy. You're always doing something and keep moving forward on your build. I can only guess how much time it takes to create a video every day. It has to be very time consuming. Great job everyone.
You are not exaggerating! It has been a fun challenge but looking forward to getting back to our normal schedule. Would be great to meet up in person oneday and or collaborate on a project. Have a great day.
Just a regular sponge would have done about the same when he comes to these sponges you should buy five or more at a time they will always come in handy because they fall apart after a few uses we hope we hope it works out great for you 👍👍
The drywall sponge is a great tool to use. We built our home about 10 years ago and the drywall sponge was so cool to use. Allot less dust and easy to use.
I loved using the sponge so much better than sand paper. So much less dust. We put in 198 sheets in our house 31 years ago and the sponge was God send.💖🙏💖
Porter Cable makes and excellent dustless drywall sander. I rented it from Home Depot when it came time to sand all of the drywall and it made childsplay out of the task. Also knocked it all out in record time.
You can use the extra sheetrock to sheetrock around the windows. You're probably going to need more mud than that if you only got one bag. Also you want to use a fiberglass type tape instead of the paper tape. Just kind of my recommendation with doing the drywall.
You can put one of those rotozip bits in your drill. It'll spin slower. But with the drill as a handle, you'll have more control, going around the outside of the outlet boxes.
Martin and Julie, I watch your videos as soon as they come out. I can't imagine how much time and effort you put into having so much content. It is so informative and personable. Your family and faith values really mean a lot in this lost world. God bless you all in what you are doing. Your drywall skills have improved so much. The drywall router ( or cut off tool) is such a time saver. Around electrical boxes and pipes it's easy. Mark a starting point inside of a box and cut to the outside, and then go counter clockwise following the edge of the box. I've been in the drywall trade for 49 years, and made a video on how to use it for cutting drywall. Check it out if you want. Continue doing a great job.
I work at a Georgia pacific wallboard plant and we mark on the board for several reasons. We mark paper splices so they can reject them later on, and send lines to let operators know when to pull a quality sample, or to mark product changes.
Joe Clark, Marty fyi you can eliminate one step in cutting sheetrock.... .run your knife down the edge of the T-square instead of your pencil...gives you a cleaner cut as well. Enjoying the build. Retired construction superintendent here...trade skills were carpentry, mostly framing. Keep it going you are closer than you know.
Marty … you have to get mud on them walls … in the cracks separating the sheets of sheet rock … you had the heat on and will have many times over and waist a lot of time and energy …. I see a LOT of small locations for the screws … but no tape lines? I love all of your learning process issues and you are A+ for sure. Also. The sponge thing slow and you will be cleaning that sponge hundreds of times. Yes it keeps the dust down. Really made for smaller projects. Rent a machine that rotates and vacuums as your are knocking down the mud and worrying about dust … put a fan in a window near where you are working. “You can’t have your cake AND eat it to”. Best of luck from PA.
Check out a dustless wall sanders. The amount of wall space you are going to do in the apartment, house and garage will pay for it in the end. Merry Christmas to the Johnson Family.
caution some of that quick set can not be sanded - it sets up like concrete - but is really strong for joint compound - just don't over apply it - sand paper wants to be 100-150 grit - sponge only works with redi mix mud
Have you considered a Generac backup generator, it can be wired into your solar system to come on when your batteries reach a certain level and shutoff when they are charged. It could run off your existing propane. They aren't the cheapest way to go but convince is worth a certain amount.
For your water check out Life Uncontained. They have a nice set up for water purification out of holding tanks. Their water comes from rain water harvesting instead of a well. Just a thought that may help y’all. God bless and Merry Christmas.
i love my sponge what i found works best if wet the sponge wipe the mud like 8 foot good then go back to start and sand it down. it is but it isn't sanding really. you will see once you start.
I have found that it takes just as much time, to set up cameras and video, as it does to actually accomplish the job that you’re doing the video for…lol It’s amazing that you’re able to put out the same quality for a video each day. As you would if you did one twice a week. You guys have a great team there.
Your plastering skills have improved greatly Marty & Jules and the use of the power cutter is way way gooderer compared to when you first used it!! Keep the furnace going to keep warmth in and you should be able to paint without having to 'reheat' the apartment. The sponge sander is okay but wont give you the finish you could be looking for; use it for primary sanding and the use a hard block with fine sandpaper to get the good finish.
I've been on a water system like you have, my tank was large enough that I could put a ladder in it and go inside and clean the silt. All and all it was good water.
Didn’t use that style of sponge but loved using this way for the primary sanding then after finish coat some light sanding. The sponge leaves a fuzzy finish. Looks great 👍
Just run your knife down the side of your straight edge. Save the time of marking it and free handing it plus you get a nice straight edge. Better to cut the face of the Sheetrock then the back. Does not take a whole lot of pressure to cut Sheetrock. By easy pressure make you blade last longer. Merry Christmas.
(Wonderful wild off grid) are 100% solar-powered off-grid has episodes showing installation and backup generator LP with automatic change over when weather not enough to keep batteries charged they have all modern conveniences and 100 % off grid
Fantastic content! I'm curious why you used mold-resistant sheetrock in the bathroom as opposed to genuine Cement Backer Board which absolutely will not ever mold? My house was built in 1982 and I'm in the process of ripping out mold-resistant sheetrock the original builders put it and replacing it. It never molded but started falling apart over time allowing tiles to fall off. God Bless and Happy Holidays!
You all are really brave to take on a task for what you have achieved, so many things could have gone wrong and expensive, but hey with God on your side who can be against you😇😇
I have tried the sponge, and I didn't like it other than the no dust. I may not have been using it correctly though. It seemed to smear the mud instead of sanding. Maybe I used too much water in the sponge, but I did try it a couple times. It was very slow compared to the dry sanding sponge like you got for the corners.
Don't overlap the corners, you'll have a lumpy corner. Yay on the sponge sheet rock dust is bad. Watch life uncontained on RUclips. Awesome young couple in Texas, they have a really good off grid water filtration system, lots of filtration. Great progress and catch that deer :)!!!
Your air handler may operate more efficiently once you are only using one clean filter! This could reduce the energy draw from your batteries. You guys are awesome.
Love the start Hello DEER!! , Good job editing Sarah, a lot of goo size off cuts Maybe when you go down to the garage to get another board take some Offcuts with you, and leave them there for future use, Or get Sarah & Seff to have a clear up, before someone falls over. Good on the pushups. Love from UK. x x
Most of the time defected products you can get a good discount on it. If you can work around the defects it can save you money. If you would have cut out the bent part and the rest is fine.
Is the generator multifuel / dual fuel in other words will run on propane and is connect to your large LP tank if not why not could use auto change over from solar to generator and generator auto start and start depending on battery status
Does your generator run on propane? If not, maybe you could get a conversion kit for it. That way you could hook it up to your 1,000 gal tank and never have to worry about running out of fuel.
ten feet on the corner is more than enough, standard height full sheets are eight feet tall. I used metal corner bead, which is used with a special tool which crimps onto the sheetrock and you just mud, or put spackle compound over it. Taped joints are where to tapered edges meet. You might find doing the taping if you did not use tapered edges, which will leave a above the rock seam. This is the reason for standing sheets up it creates only one tapered seam at most of the joints. When sheets are stood up there is no seam at top or bottom except the gap between the wall and ceiling which you will use tape folded in half applied into a bed of mud and then mud over once the first bed is dry.
Johnson family, if ppl think your lazy maybe they should go spend a month in your shoes. RUclips takes about 60-100 hours a week on top of taking care of an off-grid homestead that takes just as many hours as RUclips. Being very active in your church takes up time, out of your schedule also. So, you are not lazy you live a very active life style and your videos only share a brief glimpse into your daily lives. You guys have a great family Dynamics and family values.. so “ keep smiling” and keep up the great job of making your family off-grid homestead a reality. And yes, Sarah and Seth are doing a great job behind the scenes with video production. God bless
You might be able to overlap the mud on corner bead but I wouldn’t do it. Just line up the ends against one another and remember to mix that 40 minute mud fairly thick. A dab thicker then mud in a bucket Prior to thinning and don’t mix a big bunch at a time sting of 40 mud is an endothermic reaction ( chemical) it doesn’t require air to dry. .. the sanding sponges not really the best result. One hint about using them wring them out good very little water on the sponge.. almost dry
Sarah sounds so much like Julie not hard to tell they are Mother/Daughter. Keep up the good work
I've never thought of you guys being lazy. You're always doing something and keep moving forward on your build. I can only guess how much time it takes to create a video every day. It has to be very time consuming. Great job everyone.
We've been enjoying the daily videos! Daily videos are a ton of work you guys are crushing it
You are not exaggerating! It has been a fun challenge but looking forward to getting back to our normal schedule. Would be great to meet up in person oneday and or collaborate on a project. Have a great day.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving yes to both!
Looking forward to it.

You will never sand with paper again after you wet sand and the finish is magnificent. Good video guys
I’m a maintenance man at a apartment complex. I used one of those sponges today. They work great. Don’t be afraid to get it wet lol. God bless
Porter Cable makes and excellent dustless drywall sander. I rented it from Home Depot when it came time to sand all of the drywall and it made childsplay out of the task. Also knocked it all out in record time.

If you plan sheetrocking your garage you could use up all the pieces unless you want walls that are as nice as your house.
I work at a Georgia pacific wallboard plant and we mark on the board for several reasons. We mark paper splices so they can reject them later on, and send lines to let operators know when to pull a quality sample, or to mark product changes.

So glad you're watching the Vancouver Carpenter for Drywall reference. He knows his stuff, and if you follow his advice you won't go wrong.
You guys are the hardest working people out there
Happy to see you have chosen not to wear cellphones in your pockets. Healthier all around!
I don't think you guys have to worry about people thinking you're lazy. My goodness, I look at all you accomplish and am amazed.

HELLO FROM WEST VIRGINIA MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Your house looks alot like Christmas with all the snow and evergreens.
Morning, love your family,
Use the wire mesh sanding sheets rather than sandpaper.
Check out a dustless wall sanders. The amount of wall space you are going to do in the apartment, house and garage will pay for it in the end. Merry Christmas to the Johnson Family.
Who ever edited this one...awesome job. Content is great as always.
Looking great guys! It won't be long and it's time for texture.
When I talk to you next I have a tip about your water.
keep smiling your home build is going amazing- lots of work and you are making it look easy
Wet sanding is the way to go! Less dust
caution some of that quick set can not be sanded - it sets up like concrete - but is really strong for joint compound - just don't over apply it - sand paper wants to be 100-150 grit - sponge only works with redi mix mud
Yes, the sponges work well. I think you will like them.

Marty because its a rotary tool inside cut go in one direction and outside cuts go in the other.
Rent a drywall sander its attach to a vacuum and it cuts way down on the dust and does a better job sanding then you can do by hand
The sponge worked very well for me LOTS of smooth sanding dust on front of sandpaper IS very dusty it floats everywhere.
Good job Seth! You pushed hard and did an honest 22. Good man!
You should grind up the scrap drywall and broadcast it around you property to enhance the soil.
i love my sponge what i found works best if wet the sponge wipe the mud like 8 foot good then go back to start and sand it down. it is but it isn't sanding really. you will see once you start.

Looking great. Use more 40 minute set. Sand it with those sheets on a square palm sander. Hook up a vacuum to the sander.

You guys should check out some wind turbine power. You can connect them to your solar system and they charge at night.
Christmas Card picture, love it
Ohhh my gosh you guys are so NOT lazy..... You guys are so motivated and Xmas days away!!!💕🙏🏻💪
Those sponge work well. Not the same as dust in the air.
try tha aqua air system its about $40. sold at menards. Its nice it cuts down on dust alot! It filters the dust thru water.

Good morning.
It is a quarter to two am in Australia.
Nice!
I saw someone add dish soap to their drywall mud, to make it smoother with no bubbles. It was Palmolive.
Insulate your garage ceiling, use the yellow. Use up the lager pieces of sheet rock and texture it.
