The Brutii stand out not just because their starting position gives them access to rich cities and wonders, but also because of the trade mechanics in RTW. Naval trade was ridiculously better than land trade, and in RTW, ports would automatically trade with nearby ports. It was therefore better to have many ports close together, which is why Greece was the breadbasket for the Brutii.

He managed to setup better on the campaign map and had the upper hand, but I won almost all of the major battles because of these guys. It's the best sword infantry in the game, can deploy in the neutral zone and has relatively cheap upkeep. He did win the game eventually because his eco was so much bigger (he had both the ERE and the Sassanids as vassals), and he won the naval war and started to break my economy by attacking lightly defended settlements.

My personal most op faction has to be venice in mtw2 tbh.
One of the richest cities in the game as a capital, stradiots are the most op cav unit, venetian heavy infantry in vanilla are the best heavy infantry in the entire game, only other unit that has a chance against them in a 1v1 is dismounted conquistadors, and that's only if the venetians are unabel to charge them.
They also have pavise crossbows, some of the best archer units in the game and lategame they also get musketeers.
And ofcourse they get italian militia units so all their towns are protected well by actual good units that have free upkeep that will let you dominate the early game vs almost all other factions aswell.

True, but most of the units they produce are lower-tier infantry that would be more at home in the Bronze Age than the Hellenistic Era - they easily dominate the armies of the east (which are built around light spearmen and archer cavalry), but fail very hard against anything that's well-armored (like Roman legions or Greek hoplites). For those reason, I can see why he chose to exclude Egypt.

They had cataphracts which were insanely powerful and could even walz through spearman head on because they were so well armored, but they ALSO had bows and could kite/weaken everything before even having to engage in melee. I think I conquered the entirety of the Eastern Roman Empire with one general and four of those cataphract units (yes, General bodyguard was also cataphracts with bows).

Pretty rare to see Legend totally completely blown away by a unit so much that he considers it blatantly OP. I agree when I saw them, I remember thinking there has to be something wrong. Am I seeing something wrong here? Do I recruit them and does it somehow come back to bite me in the ass because I missed something? And then that ends up screwing my campaign? Holy shit they're powerful, how the heck are they powerful. But Legend, honestly this is, to me, the faithful representation of how massively powerful the White Huns were. They were the masters of the spear and the bow. Accurately depicts the need for LESS static formations because cavalry could be just that good in melee AND in shooting. The Danes, whilst probably not on here mostly due to starting position (one city, although close by to Stolkholm, which is one of the best money makers in the game outside of the huge ones, which, I might add, are all on the Mediterranean)
But what they have going for them, Norse Archers, basically the best early game unit, they can tear through so many early-mid game units with ease and on the walls in a defense they're friggin amazing, and, to top it off, they have melee attack of 11 with defense of 16 I believe it is which means they are some of the best melee units the danes have in the early game
The danes also get Norse Axemen and Norse Swordsmen, which are both amazing, and they just get a lot of amazing quality infantry, so amazing, that, like I said, their archers are also they're infantry

Don't get me wrong, though: the Shimazu are one of the strongest factions in the game, due to Kyushu being the best starting position you could ask for, but they can't compare with the Oda. If I had to rank them, I would say they take the 4th place on the list, preceeded by the Otomo, the Ikko Ikki and the Oda in this order.
P.S. I know what you are saying: "But the Shimazu have cheaper and stronger Katana Samurai!". Yep, but any unit other than Yari/Bow/(Loan sword) Ashigaru and Light/Yari/Katana Cavalry is wasted money (and time!) in this game. Not to mention the fact that the Oda can field two Yari Ashigaru for every Shimazu Katana Samurai for about ~25% less upkeep cost, or 3 Yari Ashigaru for every Shimazu Katana Samurai for ~25% more upkeep.

@@SorenToKeiran-Murasaki I still think I disagree because you aren't factoring how close the Shimazu are to the trade nodes, or the province specialties of Kyushu, which honestly makes the argument about cost efficiency obsolete. So long as you rush out trade ships, you are pretty much guaranteed 2 incense and 1 silk node off the bat. Fighting for control of Kyushu is easy as well, and once you own the entire island you really cannot lose the game as you have pretty much everything you need to be economically and militarily successful, with 2 naval tradition towns (Red Seal Company gives you even more money), fletchers, warhorses, a blacksmith, and even a philosophical tradition town to top it off. You can also nab the cotton node by this point as well, meaning you control 4 of the 7 trade nodes right off the bat. Honestly, their position alone makes it so they don't even need faction bonuses.
Of course, most of these apply to the Otomo as well.

I know that it's significantly older, but I was surprised that shogun 1's hojo clan wasn't on the list. The largest reason why is that unless you are directly able to resist their growth, the AI will dominate their neighbors 95% of the time. They will then use their ability to quickly turn provinces into troop producers with their castle bonus. This allows them to blobs stacks at an insane rate drowning the rest of the AI and eventually the player in an unstoppable tide of men. I thought this list was great fun to watch. This is just an occurrence I was expecting to make the list.

Germany had no way to invade Britain really. The Kriegsmarine was always outclassed by the Royal Navy, and after the Germans lost a large portion of their navy during the invasion of Norway and the attacks by the RN during the Kriegsmarine’s return home any capacity for a naval invasion was gone. The British could not invade the mainland until they received American reinforcement and most of the German troops were in the east, but the Germans were just as powerless to invade the isles.

Ulthuan is practically unassailable once you secure it, they have virtually anything you could want as a unit, those units are all really good at what they do (absurdly so even), they have access to great heroes and great magic, they have great trade mechanics and get massive trade bonuses over time (almost all settlements can produce trade goods or boost trade value). I mean, your tier 3 barracks unit is an archer/spearman combo that means you give up almost nothing in having them! Romans are often considered the most powerfull faction in rome 2 but with egyptians you beat every unit of the with ease.
Praetorians will lose every time against egyptian Pikemans. The elefants will crush every horse and Infantery unit. Sometimes you kill 500 men with one elephant unit.

    TLDR : Chosokabe >>> Oda
Could I throw in my suggestion? For Shogun TW, I would say Chosokabe would be the strongest for a few reasons : their home territory is on the middle island, which is easy to conquer, and defend since it is isolated, and they have rather quick access to the trade routes and the possibility to establish a good fleet to control the waters in the middle and S part of Japan, allowing for invasions and trade. They have a farm bonus which is nice since it adds more income. But the most important aspect would be its archers. Since Feudal Japan has no shields (for a debatably good reason), pretty much all troops (unless they upgrade their armour) are rather vulnerable to archers, and since theirs are a little above the rest, both samurai and ashigaru, they are pretty good in attack and monstrous in defence. There was one case where 2 full armies invaded one of my castles which had an army predominantly made up of archers. It was a one sided slaughter since by the time they finally reached CC they suffered huge casualties. A good tactic to secure good cities and resources would be to first conquer your island, then the island to the left, and then start moving from the Southern tip of Japan all the way up. You could have about 1/3 of mainland japan + the 2 island before the Shogunate declares war on you. And since most trade routes are to the left side of the map, you will have monopoly on most of them.
As for the Oda clan, they have NEVER survived 20 turns in AI, and their position makes them assailable from 3 sides. They would have to conquer everything to the right before considering moving towards the capital in order to not be sandwiched. And ashigaru, cheap and many as they are, fall really fast vs samurai archers.

    • @SordoBjorn
      @SordoBjorn 6 лет назад +1

I really like them too, I love going 'ranged heavy' with my army compositions because i'm more of a defensive minded general anyway, and I like to think of my casualties as more than just a number, so 1)I rarely fight open battles 2) I like using almost all ranged units, both archer and artillery, in order to decimate the enemy with artillery first, meaning i can severely thin out their own archers first and only when i feel confident i have them taken care of do i use the rest of their ammunition on the best melee units... then i close in the (mass of) archers (usually the peasant ones first so they can firstly focus down any remaining ranged units, whist they soak up their damage, before I let the samurai archers kill all the armoured targets) I let them all empty out their quivers and by then only a few units that can bring more than 10 men to stop me from taking the castle remain, so i send in my 2 melee units bostered by the archer samurai to wipe them without a sweat
Average battle result: they lose the whole stack+ garrison, I lose maybe 100 guys.
Before anyone asks, yes I do love England in Medieval 2 :P

As far as Medieval 2 powerful factions go, I strongly disagree with both the Turks and England. The Turks are far from being new player friendly, if that was what you were going with, nor have the most powerful roster at any point in the game. Yes, the Turks have a powerful early army with their horse archers, however their horse archers are weaker than what the Byzantines have early on and contrary to your statement you can't really afford to leave them alone early on as they will come after you very soon. Similarly allying Egypt isn't really an option as AI diplomacy in the game(and basically all other Total War games too) is pretty awful. Moreover especially when it comes to new players' perspective as the Turks you have to deal with both Crusades and the Mongols+Timurids which are incredibly difficult to handle unless you are knowledgeable enough in the game to know how to abuse the terrible AI despite overwhelming odds. England on the other hand, while being safe, doesn't really have easy expansion options as expanding into the continent puts you in instant contention with some of the most powerful AI factions in the game: France, Spain, HRE, etc. Also England's roster just isn't that good, only the Longbows are but even those aren't nearly as powerful as they should have been and are basically outclassed by Pavise Crossbowmen.
There are many factions that could be considered as the strongest in Medieval 2, depending on your criteria. Spain is a pretty easy faction to play, Jinettes are incredibly powerful early on, much like the Turks' Horse Archers, but unlike Horse Archers remain useful for the entire game thanks to their armor piercing javelins. While they don't have as much empty lands to expand into as the Turks their neighbors in Iberia are pushovers. Also Jinette spam on its own can basically win you the game as you can roll any AI nation over with it with ease. The only obstacle would be the Mongols/Timurids but than as Spain you really don't need to fight them to win. Also economically Spain is in a very rich area and has easy access to the best resources in the game: gold and ivory by going south into Africa after crushing the Moors. Also Spain's unit roster is simply amazing. Early on they have the above mentioned Jinettes as well as some dismounted skirmishers which are pretty decent in their own right and the typical assortment of Christian knights. Later on they have access to Musketeers(which most nations don't), the Tercio Pikemen which is the best in the game(for pike and shot formations), the best infantry in the game: Conquistadors(albeit in limited supply), Sword and Buckler Men which are surprisingly powerful and of course dismounted Chivalric Knights. Their cavalry is typical European so basically the best along with many other nations, and they also have solid gunpowder options to boot. Oh yeah and they have the best ships in the game too if that's your thing. Portugal is a close second to Spain sharing most of the same units though their unique Arquebusier unit is rather wasted as it's worse than the Musketeer in its primary functionality. Also their mounted and dismounted Portuguese Knights(which are basically the same as the English versions, speaking of England) are just worst than the regular Chivalric knights due to the 2 handed bug.
If you were to take ease of play, especially for new players, out of the equation and only look at unit rosters than I'd say Russia gives Spain a run for its money. This is mostly thanks to the Cossack Musketeers being the best Musketeers in the game and access to the best gunpowder artillery options in the game. Early on Russia has cheap weak(yet still OP against the AI) horse archers much like the Turks and dual purpose infantry which are solid enough. The main issue with Russia is its starting lands which are very poor and though expansion isn't particularly difficult the surrounding area is also pretty poor, so it will take a while until you can conquer some actual rich cities. Also Russia will eventually have to contend with the Mongols/Timurids unless they can incredibly lucky to have none of the waves spawn near Sarkel, though to be fair Russia's roster is the best suited to beat the hordes as Cossack Musketeers backed by some powerful artillery makes mincemeat out of anything.

Honestly i'd say the ERE in Attila are up there as one of the strongest factions in a total war game, granted you might lose some land at the start, but shortly after the start of the game your bank balance can just spiral out of controlling constantly increasing your income by 5% of the treasury, it got to the point near end game when the food supplies ran short in the north and the AI barbs declare war on you that I could just pay them millions to leave me alone and it would not effect my economy.

Testudo > Spet Xyon Archers. The only thing I have found to beat them. I'm currently cheesing as Eastern Rome while watching some of your videos. BTW I remember in one of your videos you said something about not being able to eliminate the huns. Well if you take out Attila 3 times he will die and then you can kill off the armies without them respawning.

I could easely say that another really good unit is the noble skirmisher in age of charlemagne. Thay have high missile damage, high morale, cool abilities and they are really good defending from charging enemies like high level swordman thanks to their armor and to their defence damage.

Circle around enemy unit with horse archer while distract their main army from their general and whack the general while routing the rest is satisfying, so far my favorite faction in attila is the hunnic faction, fun to play on campaign, fun for battle

To be honest though, the Huns and their horse archers being OP like that makes complete sense. Nomadic horse archer armies were among the most powerful armies in history. Their sheer mobility gave them a huge advantage over their foes and we see repeated trends of horse archer armies conquering vast swathes of territory in short periods of time thanks to their sheer mobility. The Parthians, Scythians, Huns, Turks, Mongols, and Timurids all displayed remarkable military capacity with horse archers. The Mongol General Subutai, for example, was able to launch a massive expedition with a relatively small force of horse archers, crushing armies of Kipchaks and Rus Princes vastly larger than his own with ease. And when the Mongols arrived in Eastern Europe in force, they were able to use their horse archers quite effectively to surround and destroy the combined Polish, Hungarian, Teutonic Crusader and Bohemian forces at Legnica in 1241.
Horse archers only stopped being effective once gunpowder became more widely used, as demonstrated at the Battle of Otlukbeli in 1473, when the Ottomans used muskets and cannons to destroy a massive Aq Qonyulu horse archer army.

      Not quite.
Horse archers are REALLY good in the flag plains of Europe. But river fighting and jungle fighting is their biggest weakness. And since horse archers don't have the luxury of standing on solid ground to use warbows or loading crossbows, they have to use short composite bow most of the time, diminishing their range effectiveness.
This is why when the Mongols goes to fight the Dai Viet kingdom, they got wrecked not once, not twice, but three times by Dai Viet crossbows and archers. And the same happened in Afganistan.

Legend you should try boarderless mode for M2TW, it'll run as well as windowed mode but look just like full screen. My recommendation is boarderless gaming, because it's free and easy to use.

Can you try spet xyan against antean poison archers? I believe missile block is useless against poison and everything just slows down and no morale

Mounted thunder braves for the Apacheans are pretty hardcore, IMO. Full stacks of those guys can take out 2-3 armies and wipe multiple full stacks in succession.

I didnt play all total wars yet, but one of the craziest factions for me, were the Germans in Rome Total War. They have spearmen, which can destroy pretty much anything the AI will throw at you. These spearmen are available from the beginning, they are cheap and take one round to built. With an army of 4 units, you beat any army of the romans before Gaius Marius reforms. Later on you have Berserkers, that are just so strong, its almost a joke. But not only that, you also have good cavallery and all kinds of strong infantery.

I know it's new, but kind of surprised Vampire Coast doesn't make the list. It's almost literally impossible to lose a campaign with them. If things go to shit, just sail out to sea and rebuild for a bit. They're not really OP in multiplayer, but once you get campaign technologies and skills their gunline is almost completely unassailable.

The Brutii were also easy because you will be going against the Greeks and Macedonia. In my experience the Greeks base troops are hoplites which means you can easily wipe them out with your skirmishers and the legion. They don’t have strong cavalry so it’s not a concern for your infantry.
