5:10 small correction: In 1707 England and Scotland merged to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, NOT the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom was formed in 1801 when Great Britain merged with Ireland.

As someone from Jersey, Jérriais isn’t actually spoken commonly anymore. It has died down almost completely, with only around 100 native speakers (who still mainly speak English) and 2,000 people capable of speaking it at all. Jèrriais is still being taught to children to prevent it from dying completely.

I'm from the Isle of Man - some good factual information as well as some beautiful clips of our island (çheer my ghooie! 🇮🇲) however one thing: in the thumbnail the island is further northeast than where it's shown on the thumbnail

What do you mean Portugese is a language in the Channel Islands? Im from Guernsey and Ive never heard of that. True, we did have quite a few Portugese working in the tourist industry / catering back in the 1970s and 80s. But they were only guest workers and had to speak Emglish. Since then we have had many from the baltic states and very much doubt that eg Latvian is an official language - even in Jersey! 😉

Very interesting and factually correct. Despite having lived all of my life in Great Britain I have never visited any of these crown dependencies. Maybe one day I will.

people in the crown dependencies are British citizens and have British passports and are free to live and work in the UK (England Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland)
They could also live and work in the Republic of Ireland due to Ireland and the UK having an old agreement where anyone from these Isles can live and work freely
And this still stands post brexit

I do understand British overseas territory and the Commonwealth. But really confused about self-governing of Crown Dependencies while under UK defense and foreign affairs.
You are correct, the UK is responsible for their defence and foreign affairs. However, Crown Dependencies can also conduct their own foreign policy, with the permission of the British government. Jersey, for example, has a foreign relations office in Normandy and Brussels.
In short, all of the crown dependencies can be best understood in one phrase..."tax haven"
The Queen's representative on the Isle of Man is the Lieutenant Governor. It's pronounced "left-tennant". Please get this simple one right! Some people and place names baffle even the locals, but this is a well-known pronunciation and universal in the UK.

Being Irish, I appreciate you saying "the archipelago sometimes known as the British Isles". For obvious reasons, we don't really like the term.
Although technically the Channel Islands are not part of that archipelago - they're only geopolitically British, not geographically.

Ireland is not a British Isle/Island. Its 2023 this is an outdated Imperialistic and Possesive term that is not recognised by the Irish Government and the majority of Irish people living in Ireland.

For anyone wondering why these microstates still exist, it's because they're tax havens. A lot of very rich people get to stash their loot close by without too many awkward questions.
I can confirm that this is true as many rich people live in houses near the main road with one house being almost famous for the cars shown off in the driveway

0:58 This is VERY wrong. They are not under the control of the British Monarch. They are dependencies of the United Kingdom (for different historical reasons) and are so by choice. The Monarch is represented by a Lieutenant Governor they appoint (sorry I forgot the correct titles/designations in English and I am on a phone so can't be bothered to search the words). The Monarch of the UK AND Crown Dependencies are constitutional Monarchs, so they have no real direct political power. They can refuse royal ascent (but never do) and that is about it. The Crown Dependencies have their own democratic governments (if you consider British "democracy" as as democratic (I'm looking at you British House of Lords and Guernsey Feudal System)).

2:00 Citizenship is misleading. British Citizenship is complicated and there are 6 classes (and something called a "belonger status"). Peoples of the Crown Dependencies are British Citizens - YES (except the few British Subjects still alive in the Isle of Man due to being Irish Orangemen). However people from the Crown Dependencies were not EU citizens and had all EU branding removed from their British passports UNLESS one of their four grandparents was born in the UK mainland - even if they were EU citizens from an additional EU nationality. Their passports are different from the UK and unique to their dependency - the cover was stated BRITISH ISLANDS instead of UK... and which Bailiwick/Island they are from. Their passport said clearly on the inside that although they were British Citizens with rights to abode in the UK, they were NOT entitled to the benefits of EU citizenship and finally where a UK passport is issued in the name of the queen/secretary of state, theirs is issued in the name of the lieutenant governor (see inside cover/wikipedia for the actual text).
2:06 THIS IS SO **FUNDEMENTALLY WRONG**. The British Government CANNOT pass laws governing them. They can only take responsibility for international relations, defence and a third thing I can't remember off the top of my head. The Crown Dependencies have their own governments and are in an agreed association with the UK. That is all. The situation is very different to the cook islands. These are not comparable.
3:50 Again this is all so wrong. Some of these people are US nationals NOT us Citizens, and these are independent states with an agreed level of association with the USA and their situations are not really comparable to the Crown Dependencies.
5:00 What you say about England finally being victorious is *FACTUALLY WRONG*. At it's end Man was neither part of England or Scotland but at that last point was independent and part of neither. You are correct in saying that the island regularly alternated between being part of England/Scotland up to that point.
5:20 The Isle of Man never *gained* high levels of autonomy and self government - it had these before it became a Crown Dependency. You're making it sound as if the Isle of Man became independent from England or something then gained a status as a Crown Dependency. No it was independent and became a Crown Dependency.
5:25 The Isle of Man is not under the rule of the British Monarch, the British Monarchy is the head of state. Those are two very different things.
6:35 Oh good you discussed the passport. However I want to point out that many Manxmen are Irish decedents and choose to have an Irish passport rather than a British one for identity reasons. They can do this due to the common travel area. This is not due to not identifying as Manx, but due to identifying as not British (due to the oppression the Irish faced). Irish and Manx languages are to an extent mutually interlegible. I speak Irish and can understand some Manx though lots of words are different.
7:20 The Manx pound DOES NOT have the same value as the British Pound issued by the Bank of England. For a normal person this sounds correct but the fact is the Manx pound is traded at par with the British pound, that is an exchange rate of £1=£1 as the currency is guaranteed/backed up. I wont go into more of this as I will go on a tangent. Many currencies are slightly lower than what they are interchanged with (e.g. Hong Kong dollar and Macau, Singapore dollar and Brunei Dollar, these are accepted in shops as $1=$1 but exchanged at say $1=0.99999 so there is a small margin for the bank or trader to cover the cost, as the Macau dollar is not wanted in Hong Kong/Brunei Dollar in Singapore). These have historical reasons that I won't get into but the Manx pound will be accepted at £1=£1. For those who are interested the GIP (Gibraltar Pound) is also £1=£1 but is not backed up in the same way. I will not get into this here.
8:08 No the UK government can't pass laws affecting the Isle of Man (on **domestic issues**)(e.g. they CAN make decisions relating to specific things such as defence, that's it). It is in the tile - SELF GOVERNING.
