Any dealer who is in business to make money and little else is no friend of the hobby. That said, a dealer who will go out of their way to educate a collector is an asset to the community. Your vids are always informative, interesting, and, most of all, educational!

Respect is earned not deserved, he’s just a normal ass human like the rest of us, he sells at a high and buys at a low like all coin dealers . He’s just another coin guy and he seems he feels entitled or something in the community when it is a self givin entitlement . Just another coin enthusiast. Not tryna hate just saying what it is.

So... expect "reveal" a video in 3-4 months when they finally come back from PCGS?
MAN! I hope they get their act together and hire some more people soon. These crazy turnaround times are about to break me. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing all those Morgans in their restored glory. You don't need to justify yourself to anyone. As far as I can tell, you put more time and effort into educating collectors & enthusiasts than pretty much anyone out there. Between your channel and CoinHelpU, your efforts have been immeasurably helpful to me. I suspect 99.99% of your audience agree.

Cleaning is such a touchy topic. But I'll say one thing - there is the concept of "improperly cleaned" coins, which means the flipside much exist, a "proper" way to clean coins. PCGS and NGC have cleaning services that result in straight graded coins. If done properly by a private citizen, dealer, etc., it can happen and HAS happened that a "properly" cleaned coin will be submitted to the graders and come back with a straight grade.

    • @gregoryhall3156
      @gregoryhall3156 2 года назад +5

Yes but are the grading services consistent. It would be interesting and entertaining to get one of the grading companies that offers “restoration” services do a blind comparison between coins that have been sent to them for “restoration” and coins that have been “chemically cleaned, aka retored” by privat individuals and dealers. The coins should be intermixed and then graded by one or more of their paid graders who are blinded to the origin of the coins. (I.e. blinded to which ones were restored by their service vs which ones were restored and submitted by private individuals or dealers.) And then lets see how many of the coins the service has restored get a details grade for being improperly cleaned vs how many get details grade that were restored by private individual or dealer and then submitted. My bet would be that a fair number of the coins that the service had done paid restorations on would receive a details grade. If so what it would prove is that the grading services that offer restoration services are just providing a means to get your coins cleaned up and made more presentable and then slabbed with no detraction (ie a guarantee of a no problem grade coin)-all for a nominal fee.

You gave me an idea here. I have a great setup for taking pictures of coins. I think I'm going to make a picture catalog of my collection. Just for my personal use and to help me inventory what I own. I can store it on my phone and when I'm looking to purchase any coins I can look and see if I already own it or not or compare the condition if I'm looking for an upgrade. 👍

Daniel: I love what you had to say about nasty/rude remarks on RUclips. There is NO place for such comments, or people being uncivil to each other (and this is coming from a disabled Marine Corps Vietnam vet who can probably out-swear just about anyone, except my wife who is a New Yorker!). And I really love what you have to say about cleaned coins. Hey, cleaning can really help some coins that are so ugly that you don't want to look at them. I have rolls and rolls of circulated Morgan and Peace dollars that I intend to clean some day after watching your "cleaning" videos again. Most of the coins I bought really cheap, and some actually look like they have shoe polish on them. A careful cleaning will really help them and let's face it, PCGS and NGC will "conserve" a coin, regrade it, and you would never know it was cleaned even though it was. Thanks for the video, Daniel! Cheers.

Daniel you proved you are a very honest man , Coin Dealer a long time ago . I have collected coins for about 40 years . I have restored coins for myself and friends who collect coins too . I am picky about the coins i restore but me or my friends have yet to have one of the coins i have restored come back with a details grade . They have all had straight grades . I normally try to stick to restoring uncirculated coins or very high end A.U. coins . The coins you restored look 100% better than they did before . I have not tried restoring coins with as much of a chemical reaction on them as the ones you restored . My hats off to you they turned out great . If any of those coins come back with a details grade it wont be because of you restoring them i know that from experience . Thank you so much for doing what will end up being a three part teaching video series . I hope you and everyone has a special blessed day .

Dipped coins are not cleaned coins. Not details grade coins, not problem coins. Every dealer dips coins, especially Morgans. Compare the piles of gleaming white Morgans to old silver proofs, which dealers rarely dip, and you see that virtually every white Morgan has been dipped, probably multiple times. Silver just doesn't stay white for long.

It's not even a cleaned coin per se. calling it restored is Right On Target. New subscriber, like the show.
I have over a dozen mint State Morgan dollars that had been stored in an PVC 2x2 holders that had full contact to the high spots and devices and left that hazy pasty green mossy look to the entire surface on the obverse and reverse as well. PVC is a damage that continues until the PVC is removed.
To preserve the mint state quality and luster underneath, it would be Un American not to do what I like to refer to as, Dipping, I think it even more UnAmerican to even question your intentions, or that you were even suggesting that it's for everybody and
I'm not going to mention what I dip in or my dipping technique, but it is truly an art form that should not be practiced by all, or to all coins. However to preserve the integrity and the rareity of the Morgan dollar,
It was necessary. So that guy was the true dip.

One question I have is about the coins you got back as cleaned/details. Were those ones you had cleaned and hoped to come back as not cleaned/details? Some of them looked pretty dull all the way through like the new Peace and Morgans and some did look good.
Just wondering if some of those had passed through your observation and if they did, what made you think they would have passed as ms coins.
I have some generally dirty circulated Morgans and looking for ways to freshen them up without damage. I have access to acetone but can’t find a video from you using it. Have a link for that?

Aside from the scratches that could give them details grades, these coins all look problem free, and I would not have believed you if you told me they were very recently covered by ugly hazy toning. They all have "the look", especially when compared to slabbed cleaned coins you showed.

I have respect for men and women who have worked hard and have become accomplished. People such as doctors, scientists, etc., and yes even PCGS coin restorers. With that said, there is absolutely no reason that an intelligent person can not educate themselves and be the equal of those people in some areas of those fields. In other words, don't blindly worship doctors or believe that only PCGS and NGC coin restorers can clean or restore a coin.

How did you clean those coins? I don't think you ever said so in the video in question. I think I'd like to tackle some of my Mercury dimes in the same way that you did with your Morgan dollars. They are artistic coins, so I'd like to highlight that appeal by cleaning them.

My video is not for that, it's a share of what I did not how I did it.

Feel better about "restored" coins that pass "details" grading muster at PCGS or NGC; however, I don't like it when such coins are sold raw-- without clearly indicating the coin was "restored".
