One tip that can help to estimate value when there are no figures at all is to ask the prospect what is THEIR time worth to THEMSELVES. And then ask how much time they think they would spend on their problem if they don't get help.
Since we use THEIR time to value price, this method works well regardless of people being familiar or not with value pricing.
In the example of selling a strategy session, you might then say the following. "Ok if your time is worth W €/day and if you think I can help you avoid losing D days on the problem and avoid you all the pressure that goes with it, then would you think it's a bad deal if I solve it for you for WxD € ?" (Note that I am talking about relieving them from pressure. Moreover I am asking them to answer "no" for them to engage. It's more reassuring for them than to engage by saying "yes".)

Yes! When someone pays you to do something for them, it's THEIR hour they are buying from you, not yours.

Thanks for answering this one! I remember reading Hourly Billing Is Nuts and thinking how vbp would apply to lean startup.
