I thought that sound was just like African chants or something you can hear more similar to that throughout the album
It is lol. The sound is a celebratory sound that Africans and Arabs make on special occasions. It's not a sample lol. The Weeknd is Ethiopian and I'm pretty certain he put that in the track as a homage to his African roots. The two songs don't sound anything alike.
Valerie Tesfaye yea definitely fit the aesthetic they were going for with the album and it matched well with the movie
Valerie Tesfaye it’s actually from Ludwig Goranson putting African stuff all over the album, The Weeknd dgaf
@@Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen ululating, my family does it constantly 😂
@@ErikGiovani he speaks Amharic all the time on his albums so i wouldn't say he "dgaf"
I'm not a musician but I'm Ethiopian/Eritrean and that chant is a common chant made by Eritrean/Ethiopian women during celebrations. It sounds a bit like "EL'EL'EL". Given the fact that the Black Panther soundtrack was inspired by African culture and music, I'm pretty sure that's what that sound is. that's sound is also present in other cultures, recently Shakira was being made fun of for doing that celebration chant during the Superbowl. And Able uses references to Ethiopian culture more than people would think. Like in "The Hills" at the end there is a voice that sings "yene konjo" which in Amharic means my love. so I'm pretty sure there is no basis for copyright infringement here.

It doesn't sound the same to me. The Pray for Me version sounds like it has a clear L pronunciation in it: more like an alalalalalala. You don't hear that L being pronounced in the Yaesayer version. It doesn't sound like a sample. It just seems like the tone is similar, but doesnt mean the vocalization was stolen.
a huge L.
Yeah actually, think your right
James W. olololololo vs alalalalalala
Exactly. You can't manipulate a sample to sound like they're singing an "aah" sound instead of an "ooh". These two songs only share the same key and that's it.
@@mishmashmush Not even that. Yaesayers sounds like an ooooo or an aaaaaa, but with variation of "stresses" (at least from a writers' pov. I'm not sure what you call that from a musical standpoint. Maybe pitch. I'm not sure) It sounds softer. Whereas the Pray for Me seems harder because the consonant is present.
Isn't that sound directly from the Ludwig Göransson score on "Black Panther"?
The album incorporates parts of the score very directly.
DaOmega95 right? That’s what I thought too. The album is actually really creative and inspired in how elements from the score were incorporated and sampled in all of the songs

I'm beginning to think lawsuits like this aren't being made with the expectation of winning, they're just publicity grabs for the accuser to get their name in headlines somehow. That's the most frustrating thing.
The sad part is that these cases actually do get taken seriously.
@@GriffinWelch They should people make stuff and someone steals it. This is serious but I'm not saying there is A case here in saying that stealing people's work is bad
It cost money to do this so its pretty expensive advertisements
They used their sample, alright, which isn't even that big of a deal. It's just, that you as an artist, should feel obliged, to contact the original owner of said recordings you are using to publish your recording, on which you make money, since it's totally dependent on their choice. It's a business, as much as it's a craft and an art. Just like every other thing you can do heartfelt.
I'm with you on this one. If you purposefully file in lawsuits like this you should be fined. Not only do you drag the name of the accused people in the mud , you also waste the time of the lawyers and judges.

You can change the vowel characteristic by shifting the formants. The effects of ululating can be simulated with a fast sidechain.
@@TheDGomezzi It certainly sounds like an auto pan or some other kind of stereo modulation effect. And yea, shifting the formants would mangle the vowel noise.
That's the thing about re pitching vocals. The process pretty well transforms a lot of the characteristics of the original sound, but if it's the same audio clip it's the same audio clip.

The choir sound in Pray for Me is an inital "ah," quickly followed by a sustained "lalala..." This "lalala..." has a clear initial rhythm that smears over time to create a smooth timbre (a kind of sustained "ah"). It should also be noted the "ah" and "lala..." are in time with the beat. Contrast this with the choir sound in Sunrise, which is a chorused "oooo" with an upwards pitch bent attack. The perceived timbral rhythm is mostly just chorusing motion (basically: an erratic beating effect produced by combining sounds with slight variations in pitch, i.e. lots of singers trying to sing the same note).
Hardly a sample. I don't even need to use my subjective experience to justify this. Look at both songs in a spectrogram and the differences are so fucking obvious it's absurd. Either whoever behind the lawsuit is utterly incompetent, or they're knowingly wrong and malicious money grubbers.

I'm pretty sure The alalalala comes from Ethiopian orthodox churches. Whenever a priest says something uplifting or powerful the females in the church produce that sound. The weeknd is a very strong supporter of the Ethiopian orthodox community here in Toronto he's donated thousands of dollars to the saint mary's Orthodox Church. The religious origin of the alalalala sound ties back to the title of the track "Pray for me".
The "Woolalalala" African chant sample is all throughout the BP OST. Off rip, It pops up on "X" towards the end as it's transitioning into "The Ways" but it's a pitch lower than it's appearance on "Pray For Me" & way more isolated so it comes across a lot clearer. You can tell it's not a sample of the Yeasayer song by listening to that. Plus, I remember MixedByAli saying they got a shit ton of sound bites from the movie & they incorporated those in the album. Either way, if Yeasayer comes away winning this court case, they'd be wrong on this one.
From listening to it I don't think that it is the same sound or a sample, in the Yeasayer song the vocals seem to be a consistent breath out, if that makes any sense whereas in Pray for me it's more of a tribal sounding Alehlehleleh sound, if that also makes any sense, and I think that fits more with the theme of Black panther

The thing is the samples pitch isn't necessarily been changed, what they did was change the formants to a higher frequency. Pitch just changes the notes in this case being sung. Formant shifting changes the characteristics of the voices, that's why it sounds similar but not exactly the same. Any producer with Melodyne (or any other similar plugin) could do this real easily. I agree the wording of this case is weird but there's no way they didn't sample it. Not to mention that as easy give away is that they sampled the very start of a song, talk to any producer that samples and they'll tell you that 90% of all the chops they make are from the beginnings of a track.
Plus The Weeknd already did this sort of thing with Portishead.

I think the lawsuit is more about the background choirs you can hear on The Weeknd's song at 1:36. They do kinda sound like the same choirs, sampled and pitch-modulated. Or it could be any other choir, or any Kontakt library really
I thought it sounded pretty close and that it'd be as easy as transposing, reverb, and some warping. I threw it into my DAW and worked with it but it doesn't achieve that lalala sound over the oooh sound, but then again, there are a lot of VSTs out there that do a lot of different things. Keeping it as is without transposing actually sounds a lot closer than pitching it up an octave. I tried a few plugins to add a more la la la type of vibrato but I couldn't achieve it (via Autotune, frequency shifter, or automation). I think Abel or the producer and Yeasayer simply crossed paths artistically speaking.

Where the pitchfork link melon ffs
I think it's a sample. If you listen to pray for me right at the end of Kendrick's verse, you can hear it most clearly. I don't know if the "elelele" part is a warbled version of the original (it sounds like it could be.) However, the "ooh" is quiet and layered over in the background, but it's unmistakably the same pitch, tonality, and even the same key. If you switch back and forth between the two tracks and tune your ear to the "ooh" sound right at the beginning of sunrise, you can hear it throughout the second half of pray for me. It's subtle, but I'm pretty sure it's the same.
Don't Pray For Me
the death of copyright would be the greatest thing to happen to music creatively
Neslope And it would also allow much larger artists with bigger social media presence to blatantly steal other artists music from them and those artists would just be told “get fucked bro”

@@Moneyman-33 meh. all that really happens with these laws in place is erroneous lawsuits like this. music should be shared, not owned.

Thats so crazy they picked that up. 👀 lowkey deserve some money from whoever sampled them without notice. Ok I actually watched the rest of the video and yes I do believe its close enough for them to win. That vocal edit is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the song and is why i really like the song so the Yeasayers do deserve money if they can prove audio engineer wise that the vocals are in essence identical.
Irrelevant rock bands will due anything for clout. First, they continue to sue a man that just died in juice wrld, and now they are suing two of the biggest artist in the world for a song that is on the soundtrack of possibly the biggest movie in 2017
Its funny because you can hear Lyn Collins (Think) drums in Yeasayers Sunrise song.
I sometimes think these lawsuits are ridiculous we're in an age with so much art with music you have big music companies helping artist make music most of its gonna sound similar it's very hard to make things sound completely unique.
Cover the new car seat headrest song
It is the same chord being sung using harmonized male voices. And there is certainly a tremolo type effect on the whole sound in Pray for Me that could be used to make the sample sound different from it's original source. To me however, it doesn't sound like the same voice singing both parts. In Pray for Me it sounds like the Weeknd's voice and the vowel is different.
