One thing I taught my Kids for Bow and Crossbow and even Rifles....KNOW your ranges...get a range finder...or mark off trees or landmarks to know how far the deer is at. I learned years ago when I forgot my range finder and I thought a buck was 45 yds...but he was 55-60...and I shaved his belly hair....last day of Crossbow season...my dads neighbor shot the HUGE 10 pt the next day which was opening day for rifle. He was so happy to tell me about the Big Buck with the bald patch under his chest. KNOW YOUR DISTANCES AND RANGES.
All great tips especially #2 and #5 don’t be afraid to shoot a doe, and be realistic , no holding out for that 185 inch buck you seen on monster bucks, looks like a win for Maryland, excellent stuff.
Personal I have not taken a deer in 35 years this will be my first crossbow season I am deadly at 45 yards in my backyard. But I do know the real world is o so different I take hunting and killing very seriously that is the way I was brought up this will be new and I do appreciate you and your videos thanks for the time you spend trying to help others. Just purchased an OLD Excalibur Crossbow , Haven't owned one in about 25 yrs . Bought it for something different to play with at the Fish & Game Club .I know it will need some TLC and tuning , but most of all I need to learn a new skill . Found your channel and much appreciate your clear voice and advice . Subscribed . Ontario Canada .
I started following you several years ago when I first started with my crossbow and you helped me a great deal, thanks! Then with all the other channels out there I didn't see you as much and kind of drifted off to other channels but I'm glad I'm back seeing your channel again. You have a very common sense way of explaining things and you don't seem to get caught up in the lasted trends just because they are trending, hope you keep going in your own direction, thanks again!
I've had my shares of misses and bad shots. Accuracy has been my worst enemy, but the more I get out the better I become. Great video Rich, can't wait to see this year's Maryland hunt.
Love your helpfull content Rich …. Great videos …. Well spoken … great info needed from someone who has a passion for hunting with good equipment and sharing you’re experiences…. Thx from Nova Scotia
Sounds like you had a successful trip down to Maryland, Congrats! Been a little warm for my liking but supposed to take a dip on Friday so looking forward to getting out. Keep up the great work and I'll be looking for your videos on the Maryland hunt👍
I love your tips! My #1 favorite tip of yours is "sacrificing" one of your mechanical broadheads for practice and #2 - shoot any/all legal deer for the experience. Love it. I am officially addicted to your videos.
Yeah. Def don’t rush the shot. Great tip. And if your shooting fixed blades shoot the one you intend to hunt with to make sure they fly good with the arrow there on. A good broadhead can take a shot or to into foam and still be hunting sharp.
Hey Bunjie, new viewer from KY. Just watched a video you did last November. Why Swhacker? Just gotta say that I truly appreciated that video man. I'm a proud Excalibur owner of an old axiom that was my first crossbow, and now I have owned a shorter, newer model for 3 years now and love them both. Taken a lot of KY deer with them. Swhacker 150 grain, 3 inch broadheads have been a true blessing in both the old slower model, and the newer faster model. For several years I tried several types of fixed and mechanical broadheads. The Excalibur models, Rage, NAP, etc... All killed deer, not all left good blood trails or was what I consider humane kills. Then, I tried these Swhacker 3 inch, 150 grain dudes and man!!!! Take last year, a nice buck at 20yds broadside, ran 65 yds spraying out both sides and fell over without a kick!!!! Late season doe at 15 yds, ran 35 yds spraying out both sides and fell over dead on the ground!!!! Blood trails? Blood trails? Absolutely! Humane kills? Heck yes! Easy within sight retrieved deer, yes, yes, yes!!! You can't go wrong with them. I'll never try anything else. I stock up on them! Enjoy the videos, keep up the x bow dream!!!
Very good video and solid tips for sure Rich! I've tested my top broadheads and arrows this year and I'm confident that I can get it done out to 35 yards with my favorite fixed heads!
Utah only allows crossbows in archery season for disabled hunters who can’t draw and hold a bow. I am applying for the disability waiver this year. Can’t use a scope in archery season either.
If you are holding out for that "BIG BUCK" you may not put anything in the freezer. May I suggest tip #6? Use Teflon (plumbers) tape or dental floss on the threads of the broadheads to prevent them from working loose.
I have used plumbers tape for the outdoor shower and was always impressed with its effectiveness! I've never had a broadhead loosen up, but I can see how it would work well! And dental floss, yes very clever too!
Congratulations on a successful trip to Maryland you guys I can't wait to see the videos. Thoes are some great tips as this will be my second season as a crossbow hunter. One question tho what are the cases you are using to store you arrows? I have some arrows of different weights and and looking for a convenient way to store them and know at a glance what I have so I can grab and go.
Plano and a few other companies make those cases, they're great to have. If you are a crossbow Hunter like me you want to look for a crossbow sized one, not the real long cases.
@@Deathbybunjie Thank you so much I am a crossbow hunter going on my 2nd season I am learning a lot from you and your videos please keep up the great work.
The best way to learn is by experience, and thru advice from those that have traveled the journey. My best learning tool was from mistakes I have made thru the years, instead of things I accidentally got right. I trophy hunted with multiple types of arrow launchers thru the years with success. But when I shifted to shooting doe's, (there's a lot more of them around) my knowledge drastically accelerated. Shooting doe's to build up your confidence, is great advice.
Also if your using fixed blades you have to balance them in. Tat end making sure the fletching is lined up with the blades on the bolt. You have to heat the tip then turn to line it up. 👍
@@CalvinsCorner72 I did too until they started making them so long. Rocket used to make a short 100 grain expandable that shot good. But no more, I think it was the steelhead 100.
Thank you Rich So, I’ve noticed my broadheads hit about 3in low and 3 in right from my field tips of the same grain. Guessing I should just sight in my crossbow with broadheads then? And for hunting elk out here in Wyoming, I’ve heard 150 grain fixed blade Grim Reapers are good? I’ve had bad luck with the mechanicals. Thanks for all you do. I think we’d be good hunting buddies in another life 👍🙏
I've only heard good about the Grim Reaper over the years, no reason to leave that wouldn't get the job done on a good shot with a good crossbow LOL and yes I just sight in with broadheads if they are all flying the same
Here in CT, deer season kinda demands taking does. Deer are a nuisance animal with overblown populations in non -rural areas. If there's trees, there's deer in 'em. They've been seen all over Norwich and caused plenty of serious accidents. And they're OTE cute and cuddly. I had a friend get messed up by a buck that swore his yard WASN'T his anymore because a couple does were on it. Hunting for me isn't about the thrill or competition: it's a necessity to balance nature order after we chased out almost all the predators that managed deer population without filling those predator vacuums ourselves.
Congratulations on your buck Jeniveve (sorry if I misspelled your name). Being a taxidermist, were you able to preserve your bucks antlers? I’ve heard of injecting the velvet with formaldehyde but I’ve never done it. I’m in South Texas and all of our bucks are out of velvet when archery season arrives.
Antlers are frozen right now, preserved as best we can, and she is looking into a couple of different options. We'll do a video about it down the road for sure.
ANTLERS, Rich. C'mon now.....deer don't have horns. Lol Great tips for newbies, especially Genevieve's one about REALISTIC expectations......I couldn't agree more. I tell both my boys (12 and 15) every year to not rush the shot and aim small and low.....works every time.
This video is just in time! I'm a new crossbow hunter, i've been on just one hunt so far and i didnt get anything because the hog made absolutely horrible sounds approaching the feeder in front of my elevated blind and since i'm as new of a hunter as they come, i got scared because i thought those were the sounds of a bear, and my platform i was hunting from was just 3-4 feet off the ground, so a bear could've easily gotten onto it, so intentionally made a sound to scare the animal away, and that was the only animal that passed by that area that day. When i described the sounds to experienced hunters later that day they laughed and told me those were hog sounds, no way it could've been bear sounds and there shouldn't be any bears there. I'm planning to go hog hunting again to that same spot and i have several questions. The thing is that in my country (unfortunately i dont live in USA) crossbows are only legal up to 95lbs of draw weight, so they are very slow. My crossbow is an EK Archery Guillotine-M with 95lbs limbs and it only pushes a 480 grain arrow up to 246-248fps. The arrow itself weighs 255 grains without a point, so 480 grains is with a 125 grain tip and a 100 grain weight screwed in the back of the insert. Considering how slow that crossbow is and that my target game is hogs, i dont know if i should go for a lighter or heavier arrow and what broadhead should i choose. The lightest i can make that arrow is 355 grains, and i can make it very heavy by screwing in lots of weights, could probably take it to over 600 grains if needed. So what weight should i go with? Now as for broadheads, i have two options - a chinese Schwaker knock off which is 100 grains and i think something like 1.75" cut, and the other option is a chinese knockoff of the strickland archery helix fixed blade single bevel broadhead, it weighs 125 grains and has a 1 3/16" cutting diameter. So which one of the broadheads and weight configurations would you use? The feeder is just 10 yards away from the blind and i'm planning to shoot no further out than 15 yards, so given all those conditions what combination of broadhead and arrow weight would you choose?
I agree 💯 with what Rich said here i would also like to add a single bevel and two blade for that model. Make sure its of great quality because tips can bend causing a roll. Check out the ranch fairy and his methods too.
It's been 20 days had covid first it's been 3 weeks of hunting haven't seen much deer worried about the deer it's not going good just wish for a doe that would be really nice
Assuming you are using the same weights and the same arrows, spin them in an arrow spinner and make sure that they spin straight. Then, if they still don't shoot right you will have to tune the Broadhead to the arrow by making sure the blades line up with the fletchings. I am not an expert on this. You'll have to look at other videos. Frankly, this is one reason that I use mechanical broadheads. The other reason is for a bigger cutting diameter.
The other option if it shoots off but the same with every arrow, you can just sight in for that Broadhead and and you're ready to hunt. Some Mechanicals don't fly exactly like fuel points, in fact probably most of them don't at longer yardages, and for that reason it's no problem to just sight in for them at those yardages. I hope that helps.
Wind planing...some heads drift left or right, some slow down and hit low, some steer the arrow like vanes on the front end...unless you shoot them you won't know. Differs from one model to another and even one head of the same brand to another.
I look forward to being able to even shoot my crossbow as I've been waiting two months bow for the crank to come in at my local archery shop... Buying from the states through the mail bites! I can almost rope cock it myself except the last 2 inches, my arms are as far out as possible. 😅 I'm not too short! They made their crossbow too long! 🤣
Hey Rich have a friend that has recently purchased a micro assassin 400 TD, and on the first trial run sighting it in we noticed the serving was being chewed to bits from the catchment/trigger mechanism after just a handful of shots... is this really common practice in such short amount of time with these C-bows or are we doing it all wrong ? plenty of string wax and rail lube was used 🤨
Shoot every legal deer down here and you better have some good knives and a big freezer... :) We get a minimum of 12...no idea what the maximum is when attending all possible state managed hunts.
