  • In this video I'll be repairing the damage I caused to my YLOD CECH03 when attempting to replace the Tokin capacitors on a previous live stream at • PS3 CECH03 YLOD - Lets...
    I failed to bridge the VCIN and VCOUT of the power rails for the RSX and CELL processors respectively. When powering on the system as the capacitors weren't in parallel they ending up detonating like small PCB atomic bombs.

    100% Correct!! Dan with regards to the' Tantalum caps polarity the -- marking is the positive. thru hole they mostly have a + next to the voltage number. 🖖👍

    I got a backwards compatible fat PS3 throwing error core 3001 from syscon which is 12v rail fail but tested power supply and it's good. Could it be these capacitors?

    I've got an A01 that I had a load of tants blow on, probably for the same reason of not jumping or a short from my poor soldering. I replaced my caps again, jumped properly, and took good care in my soldering. Now when I attempt to power on the console I get a solid red light on standby, hit the power button, get a beep, then no power. The power will stay completely off for a while until the red light will finally come back and I can try again, issue repeats. I tested the PSU on my main A01 and it tested good. Fuses look and test good, and the only other visual evidence of damage I can see is some charring by a set of resistors near the DRAM circuitry, but there is a mirror of this circuit in good shape and all resistance values appear identical. Any idea what I should look out for next?

      Honestly, it could be anything. Just go through the usual electronics repair steps. Visual inspection, test, meter things out. Check things on the same power line as the blown tantalums, etc.

    Hello, what are the actual tantalum replacements used here? I don't see a link in description and I cannot seem to find these more short and square looking units online !

      www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001803924849.html 220uf 6.3V are the ones I used. I tested each one using an ESR meter as well to be sure they were up to the job before installing them.

    Hi! Why you put on one side 4 capacitors and on the other side 5 pieces? And why you jumped them with the upper lines? You don’t have any capacitors here. No offence, I’m just courious abot this topic :)

    • @gintter2698

      Ok, gotcha. I found your stream and I’ve seen that you replaced all Tokins ;) Now this jumper cable makes sense.

    So, just 2 jumper wires on CPU/rsx side?

    • @NewRetroRepair
      @NewRetroRepair  Год назад

      It doesn't matter which side. The boards share the same rail. As long as you jump it with sufficient gauge of wire. With that said though, chances are if it's a YLOD it'll be a 3034 error. I'd suggest using a TTL adapter to read the syscon error codes before just swapping caps.

      Try diagnosing the fault rather than blindly swapping parts. Google "PS3 Syscon Reader". Do some reading. That should help.
