  • Shopping for a new chainsaw can be tough with all the different models and bar sizes available these days. The Husqvarna 445 can be a great place to start when trying to decide what saw will best fit your needs and feel the most comfortable to use. The 445 offers a great combination of power and weight at a great price. Plus with a decompression valve and Husqvarna's Smart Start system, it makes it easy for most people to be able to get it fired up. The 445 we use in this video is using an OEM Husqvarna 18" bar and .325 chain. The recommended bar sizes for the 445 are 16", 18", and 20" but we prefer the 18" set up the most out of the 3. The 445 is built much like the legendary 455 Rancher but is actually 2 lbs lighter than the 455 Rancher. 2 lbs doesn't sound like much, but it can be a world of difference when carrying and using the saw a few hours at a time.

About 3 months ago I was in need of a light-weight limbing saw and needed one immediately. I wanted an Echo CS-501P, but at the time buying any Echo chainsaw wasn't convenient. So I went to my local Lowes and bought a Husqvarna 440e w/a 18" bar.
    The pros:
Extremely light-weight - I can run it all day with no user fatigue. One of the lightest if not the lightest in this class.
Great AV system - My hands didn't go numb while running it.
Plenty of power - 40.9 cc and with the X-Cut chain it cuts very well even with a buried bar if you let the saw do the work. As one should with any chainsaw.
The Flip-Caps - They can be opened with gloves on.
A quality air filter that works with no leakage around it.
It starts easy if you follow proper starting procedures.
    The cons:
Straight from the box, the saw wanted to keep shutting off during idling. Otherwise it ran excellent. After properly adjusting the idle screw with the scrench, the saw would then bog when you pinned the throttle. I had to buy a spline tool kit because Husqvarna chainsaw's L and H screws can't be adjusted with a screwdriver. I adjusted the L jet and tached the H jet. The saw runs as should now. This was more of an inconvenience than anything.
Plastic bearing raceways - I have heard guys complain about them melting and even in some cases the saw actually catching on fire.
My thoughts concerning the 440e and 445e:
They are home/land owner chainsaws intended for limited usage such as pruning, limbing, the occasional felling and bucking of a tree or two. These are not firewood saws nor even designed for day in and day out pruning and limbing.
Personally, for someone looking to spend around $300 bucks, I would highly recommend buying the Echo 490 over both the 440e and 445e. The 490 is a 50cc class saw, and it has a magnesium crankcase.
For the home/land owner that cuts a lot of firewood or is using the saw on a regular basis in general, I'd recommend saving up the extra money and buying the 501P.
I didn't really need the 501P, but I wanted a pro-quality saw and a back-up to my 440e. So after saving up the money I recently bought a 501P w/a 20" bar. It cost me about $150 more than the 440e, but the difference in over-all build quality and power in a saw that weighs about a lb more was well worth it to me. The 620P and 501P I now own should last my lifetime. I won't make that claim with the 440e.

The 400 series of saws from Husqvarna are all good durable saws. They hold up well and can last quite a while if you keep up on the maintenance and use a good quality mix oil and bar oil.

Fits me perfect. I got a old 36 husky (still have) at 12 after 6 yrs of carrying brush, watching, and learning. I bought the 50.2 Cc 16' and I cut 16/18 cord yearly, plus tree removal. Unless your cutting Big timber for a living, that's a fine choice. It turns up, not heavy, and just right. My opinion.

Bought my model 36 in 1996 and it still has the original bar! Auto oiler no longer works and my Husky dealer said that it's not worth repairing it. After all these years it sounds like a great excuse to buy me a new 445, so I did.

We sell a lot of the 400 series saws from Husqvarna and we have seen a decline in sales of the 455 Ranchers due to the price and reliability of the 450, 445, 450 Rancher, 440, and 435. All of the saws in the 400 series line up are good saws but the 455 Rancher, 460 Rancher, and 465 Rancher models just keep running and running.

The 445 is a good saw. Especially for the price. Just too many saws in that cc range at good prices between Husqvarna and Echo. Makes it tough to choose

Best thing that you can do is get rid of the stock low profile anti kick chain. They are absolutely horrible. And upgrade the spur drive drum to a 7 tooth Rim Drive. I have a 50.2cc 445E II and it pulls just as well as the 455 and 460 in 20"+ dry red oak. It actually cuts a little faster than a 460 with a 7 tooth rim drive.

Love my 445, starts easy, low vibes, cuts very well, and pretty good on gas. I've used the crap out of it clearing a woods lot for my house and removing dead, fallen, diseased, or Widowmakers throughout my 10acres. If I was to do it over again, I woulda considered Echo cs490, for the same price, just a better build saw

The Echo saws are a bit under powered for there size. If you lightly port and open up the muffler a bit they wake up. But you can do the same with the 445. They respond very well to a simple muffler mod.
