  • In this video of the video series "How to Build a Surfboard", I show what I use to seal an EPS surfboard blank. Then show the process on how to seal the blank.
    LePage Big Hole filler is what I like to use because it's light and pure white in color but you can use any type of spackling wall repair/filler and paint it to the color you like with water based paints. You don't need to seal a polyurethane blank or XPS Foam.
    There are two angles filmed, one from my head and the other from a fixed camera. The fixed camera view starts at the 17:13 minute mark.

    Your doing a great job
    For the rails cut a rectangle piece about 2" to 3" by 1" or 2" out of a 1.5l coke bottle and you find it pushes the pollyfila better the plastic follows the contours of the rail better an old plaster called the mighty Pound showed me a few tricks years ago
    Cheers I enjoy watching your videos

    I was doing the same thing few years ago.After a year board starts to delaminate,because the resin could not penetrate into the foam,the filler makes a layer on the foam.If you use EPS foam it sucks more resin than PU foam blank.Now i use a resin and some micro ballons,this works fine...no more delamination

    Arent you worried about de-lam when the spackle separates from the foam over time?

      I've been trying to get to the bottom of this mystery as well. But it seems that lots of pros builders use spackle. My guess is that the bond between the foam and the epoxy isnt that important since the foam can detach from itself if pulled on from above? No idea.

    Hey Andrew, I'm building my first Surfboard out of XPS. Your videos are helping me alot! To fill up holes I use a 'light filler'. It must be the same stuff that you use in this video. This stuff is great and I'm wondering, If I'd seal the whole Board with this, maybe it would minimize the risk of delaminating from the XPS foam. What do you think? Thanks for your response. Greetings from Germany and keep going. I like your videos!

    Hi Andrew, here’s something that’s been on my mind lately. How would spackle serve as a filler coat? I’ve tried epoxy and epoxy + micro balloons, but wasn’t satisfied. Hard sand, had some trouble with the curing of the epoxy, curing takes a long time,… yet to try polyester filler, but I’m a bit afraid it would damage the core.
    On my current project, I had to strip the fibreglass on the rail (again epoxy issues) and restored the damaged eps with spackle. Of course some spackle got spilled on the fibreglass deck, so I sand it back and absolutely loved it. Easy to apply and sand, quick, cheap,… not as structural as epoxy of course, but it should be fine for a prone board.
    The spackle would wash away in seconds so it’d need a final epoxy coat, but do you think this could work? Or would it peal off right away? Looking forward to your advice!

    Do you really need to seal the board? What would be the result without doing it?
    However thanks a lot for your tutorials, super cool!

    • @markm6632
      @markm6632 6 лет назад

      Yes, you really DO need to seal EPS. Otherwise it will suck lots of expensive epoxy into.
      I tried Big PolyFilla. Did not like it. It crumbles, does not look strong, is not sandable. I prefer mix of epoxy + glass micro bubbles + fumed silica.

    Hi Andrew great video ,and great looking board ,where can i find this poly filla ,and can you use any spackle for the job?This first board build ,I'm Eps ,and i was gonna use polyester resin, but i heard this will eat the eps foam ,i have a friend who told me to seal it with plaster of Paris first ,than i could use polyester resin, is this true ,or do i still need to epoxy resin? Keep in mind this is my attempt at shaping a board ,thank you

    Hey Andrew, first of all thanks a lot for all the video's. I am learning a lot from them. I was wandering if you had delamination with this board ?I am almost at the point to use the spackling. But read all over the internet mixed opinions. Hope you can answer this question.

    one more question. I spread spackling like you do and when this first layer of spackling dry out I see texture of beaded foam. After I starting shaping this structure do not fade out, but still visible. should I seal the second thin layer in this case ?
    other problem is when I shaping this first layer some places become white, some places become spotty darker, than white and finally it looks like dirty. not even clear one-color layer. how can I cope with those two problems?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  8 лет назад +1

      +Леша Варсунов You can thin out the spackling and apply more or you could paint the blank with white acrylic paint, once you have it spackled and sanded.

    So quick question andrew, i tried finding that filler but its only available in Canada. So i was wondering, why not use Qcell? I dont know if your familiar with but i was wondering if i could use that for filling before glassing?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  9 лет назад

      andresperry7 I have used Qcell for repairs before, I'm assuming you are going to mix some Qcell with epoxy and then spread it over the blank? I have heard of guys doing that before, but I think it would be messy. You can't find any type of white spackling? Another option is to seal the board with spackling or drywall and then paint it white with acrylic paint, assuming you want a white blank.

    • @slavickskromul281
      @slavickskromul281 7 лет назад

      andresperry7 hey bro, any patch 'n paint sparkling would do, as long as it's a light weight compound, I wouldnt recommend drywall compound the green label or black label one, it attached very hard, light weight isn't that durable, but that's not what you looking for.... blue labeled joint compound is what u want to use, add a little dish washing liquid, so u can pull it a lot easier before it will observe and you can add some tile bond glue or simply white paper glue or wood glue, do a skim coat first, very very thin, then " brush it out " meaning carefully scrape any lines or lol bumps left from a squeegee, do not sand it, because it will leave dust and your final coat might not stuck as good, then sand it with sand sponges 220 400 then 1000, when u sand with a sand sponge, it sort of polishes the surface, and there isn't much dust left on a surface, then you might wanna spray it with automotive primer, depends on a resin and hardner u are using, light weigh spakling observes like a sponge, and some resins might melt your foam... just take your time bro ... @slavickskromul281 7 лет назад

      Oh and avoid putting too much spakling on the rails, it might make them more fragile

  • @user-is9ym9zn8v

    hi Andrew,
    I found several different types of spackling/filler with different base, like water-based, vinyl-based, acryl, latex. Not sure vinyl-based filler is the best choice cause fiberglass may not match with it. What is the base of the filler you chose?

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +Леша Варсунов The spackling I use is water-based and I thin it with water too, to make it easier to spread.

      @@user-is9ym9zn8v Здравствуйте. Сейчас делаю доску. Никак не могу найти, какие шпаклевки можно использовать перед оклейкой стеклотканью. Попробовал эпоксидную, но она становится очень твёрдой, и при шлифовке съедается пенопласт вокруг, а шпаклёвка остаётся почти нетронутой. Сейчас пробую акриловую шпаклевку. Но она тоже вызывает сомнения. Не знаю, прилипнет ли к ней эпоксидка. И слой шпаклевки получается хрупким и пылящим при шлифовке. Вдруг потом все отслоится? Вы получили какой-то опыт? Можете что-то посоветовать?

      @daliks 9 лет назад

      +Andrew W i just gave it a wirl and it turned out pretty darn smooth! it's curing now, bottom tomorrow. then a slight sanding and it will be ready to go. i want to tint it BEFORE glassing though, like you did on this one.. tried tinting in the laminating proces, it can be a nightmare with sandthroughs :(

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  9 лет назад

      +daliks Awesome, I'll have to give it a try again on my next board, it was years ago when I tried it. I think using the epoxy to seal the board will give much better results for tinting, so you don't get extra pools of resin making dark spots. Keep me posted on how it turns out!

    • @daliks
      @daliks 9 лет назад

      +Andrew W yeah cool! i think it will be sweet, as smooth as it is looking now. ill scuff it up with 100 grit softblock, then resin tint the complete nose first, then the complete tail and let it dry vertical.. lets hope it works and doesnt give runs.

    Hey bro, you are clueless when it comes to sealing EPS foam. The main reason for sealing the blank is so if you use resin the foam doesn’t melt, not to cover up your mistakes, by the looks of it you have a lot.
