Hands down the best glassing video I’ve come across so far. So impressed by the craftsmanship and the calm and to the point explanations while at it. Making something very difficult seem effortless. Master class!
What a workmanship.
I'm debating on how to finish my winnebago raised roof. It has complex compound curves, must be structurally strong, and look good. It It's a complete rebuild. About 30' and 12' wide including the sides of 16" and sealing in the caps permanently.. Complex curves. So what to do?
I looked at aircraft sheet metal, various coverings, but when I saw this and how to deal with compound curves, I'm blown away. The cleanliness of the lines are similar to the surfboard. There are curbs, openings, fairings, and nice shapes that need attention, but this video was so inspiring that it made my decision easy.
I saw another video on gel coats and gloss coats leaving me in awe. Both from Fibreglass Florida.

His sidewalk was one of our jumps that we'd hit every time we went by. We'd be coming downhill hot going for distance and then hit that hard right turn and fly by his shop...

Tip: Instead of attempting to hold the fiberglass above the fin patch as you pull it across the board, just turn the board around so that the fin patch is on the other end.

So many great tips in this video I wish I had when I started glassing my boards. I use an epoxy resign which is a little different to work with but the basics are very similar.

When cutting along the tape line with the blade, is it important to NOT cut too deep? ie does it matter if the foam is cut a couple mm deep? or does it not matter so much?

the main strength comes from the fiberglass and not from the foam itself. so it is not that much of a deal to cut in it just a little bit. But i would try to avoid it as good as i can!

I have a question: You show how to lap over the bottom lamination, but do you also lap over the top sheet so that the rails are double-thick? Where do you trim the top sheet? Thank you!

when i did my first lam with fiberglass hawaii 2:1 epoxy, the resin in the bucket got hot pretty quick (even with slow hardener). I paniced when my batch started smokin. took maybe 10-15 minutes to get that hot, and my rails were still not saturated. i wish i recorded it..i slipped on the wet resin on the floor, cause i had plastic sheeting on the ground..board fell off glassing racks..(the board surprisingly still rides fine after all these shenannigans).. did my research and for anyone laminating with epoxy in semi high temps: its an exothermic reaction..meaning the resin emits heat as its catalyzing depending on how hot it is. so once the resin is poured and spread out, the reaction is slowed down. the problem is keeping it in your bucket. about to attempt number two..got rid of the plastic sheets to say the least. I learned that some of the epoxy guys put their batch in a bucket of ice when theyre not pouring to keep it cool. an alternative would perhaps be to just prepare a second and maybe third batch , pre measured ready to mix and pour, depending on how big the board is (if you aren't fast with your lams yet, that is). thank you for the extremely detailed videos. they help a backyarder like myself alot.
Just did some glass work today had the opposite thing happen slow slow curing but only 55 Fahrenheit out so...
Awesome videos Matt! Your instructions have helped a ton as I build my first longboard. In this video, how long did you have before the resin kicked off and you could no longer work it? On my bottom lam, it was 90 degrees, I used .5% mekp, and didn't even get 10 minutes. On the deck, used about .9% mekp, it was 80 degrees, and once again only got about 10 minutes. Is .5% mekp or even less ok in order to get more working time?
This is awesome, well done! I really liked Matt's technique on pouring and spreading his resin. Just did my first two cut laps, the day before you dropped this, and coulda used a few of his tips haha. Will we get to see the rest of the glass job?

I didn’t catch at the end because I don’t think it was mentioned, but how long did you wait for it to harden before flipping the board over to cut the lap?
Jeff Sauers it was about a half hour or so, you want it to be hard but not fully set up.

Hi Matt you mentioned using your green to achieve a Coke bottle tint is this tint created by just adding only the green to your resin.
Hi nice job ! I’m repairing a board and wanted to fill in the dings. I’m afraid by filling in the dings I will end up with different colour shades of white spots .In the video you add colour to the laminating process.Would you re laminate over the whole board to add new artwork and colour to cover dings? Or can you add colour in the hot coat(this is just the last layer with resin?) sorry I’m a newbie 😅

How does the Resin stay unkicked in the bucket for so long? When i try to laminate, my resin potlife is like 5 minutes and then it starts to gel up and then i have no pourable resin left.
sounds like you are using too much mekp, what is the temperature where you are glassing?
@@FiberglassFlorida Well, since I'm a beginner I try and use 1% MEKP, and I live in Los Angeles, so I would say it's around 78-85 degrees here midday when I glass. I am also glassing in an enclosed 10X10 foot tent I don't know if that would make it hotter and have the resin kick faster. What should the resin pot life be if I proportion the MEKP correctly and glass in the right temperature?

Hey ,could you give me some advices about resine epoxy cauz I'm about to finish my board
Seems like when it comes time to work the resin on the underside/top of the board, it would be really helpful to have the option of jacking the board stand up a couple of feet to keep from being bent over and uncomfortable during that point of the process. I'd be cannibalizing an old barbers chair with the hydraulic foot pump and making that baby adjustable. Great video.

How are you shooting 20 cc of catalyst in 2 liters of resin and still able to manipulate the the resin for 15 minutes? I am in Ventura, where it doesn’t get that hot, and I gotta use 1%, and I still feel like I’m running out of time.
is the yellow pigment which Matt uses the school 10x75 bus yellow pigment, or just the normal 10x73yellow pigment? thanks

how long should you wait before cutting the masking tape/excess glass off? I'm not sure if what's shown at around 22:53 is totally hardened, or maybe halfway there to make it easier to cut.

ello, I'm laminating my first board and I made a mistake, I added more catalyst and the resin dried before finishing, it happened that it was with drops and very thick drains on the sides. Still says only the bottom, the deck is missing. What can I do? Sand? Thanks.
What are your techniques to get a smooth curve green tape line? Do you keep your tape as low as possible before you attach it with your thumb?

What weight Volan do you use on the top vs the bottom? Also can you still use the volan with a EPS/epoxy resin board?

I believe it is just acetone and wiping of his glove. Acetone is what he keeps in those tubs.

How come the resin doesnt melt the styrofoam?
There are 2 different types of foam, One used for ploy resin and the other for epoxy. If you switch these up the foam will melt.
Hi matt, when you laminate a surfboard you use the same type of resin for the diferent stages?(lamination, sanding and hot coating)
For surfboard lamination we recommend Silmar 249A or Silmar 249B. The Silmar 249B has a little bit more of a blue hue to it which makes the finished board appear to be whiter and brighter. We sell more of the 249B than we do 249A but it’s all preference. For the hot coat with a sanded finishing you can just add wax solution to the resin. 4oz. Wax solution per gallon of resin or 1oz. Per quart. Kick that a little bit hotter with a little extra MEKP and that will be good for a final “hot coat”
If you’re looking for a gloss finish we would recommend using Reichold 32737 Gloss resin. That resin has some great characteristics that allow for an amazing finish that polishes out beautifully.
