Turning an old Gold Mine into a jump!

- In this MTB trail building episode, I explore old gold mines in the area and build a step down jump out of an old gold digging on my property.
Our property is covered in old gold digging sites. All that remains of these sites are small piles of dirt and a ditch. These are perfect for building mountain bike jumps because they don’t require much work.
After clearing the run in and landing I quickly got to work in the mini excavator digging a borrow pit. The dirt from the pit was used to build the kicker for the MTB step down.
The jump is really smooth and fun to hit. The speed you gain out of this jump will make the following hit pretty interesting.

cuplaps you are my inspiration. i am currently 12 and incredibly into mtb thanks to you. it has given my life a purpose and i just want to say thanks.
Dude thats so cool to hear! I wish I started mountain biking when I was your age. Glad you are having fun. Thanks for watching.
SICK! I love your videos! As a fellow Aussie mtber I love to see people building jumps!
Awesome! Stoked to have some Aussie fans!
Love that chocolate cake finish. Great video!
Mmmm chocolate cake!
Love a step down! My favourite feature to ride by far! Love the content!
Thanks James! Love the speed you pick up out of a step down.
That’s cool, I have this weird uneasiness with step downs, I prefer level jumps or step ups, probably just need more practice on step downs.
@@mattspen you can definitely feel the bike drop out from under you it used to be scary to me
@@nikounourbakhsh8433 good point, maybe I prefer the feeling of the bike compressing towards me. Good news, since this comment I have been focusing on step-downs and drops and can feel myself progressing and feeling better off them.
@@mattspen that’s great I have always been better at step downs and drops as I am always back wheel heavy on step ups but I’m getting better lol
Looks smooth!
Cheers dude
Dude absolutely brilliant build . The way you licked that lip 👌😝. Great video and will deffo follow for more builds .
Thanks mate. Like I said, a bit smaller than yours but so satisfying to ride. Thanks again for checking it out.
@@cutlaps Mate I can already see you making it bigger 🤣. Great work and keep them videos coming buddy 🔥

Says my last name right, legendary!
Yeiw! Congrats mate. You won and I didn't even need to put your name on the sandpaper haha! Whats the best way to contact you?
@@cutlaps cheers mate, I forgot about the sandpaper trick.
Probably Facebook or istagram mate. Same name on both.
These are sweet videos! I am on a forest service trail crew in Montana but we aren't doing any mtb specific trails. These jumps look like such a BLAST and make me wanna build trails like this!!!
I'm curious what all is in your mix that you are smoothing on the the ramps? Is it just the soil from the site, are you adding clay? Also what is the longevity of this smooth surface through heavy use and rain?
Hi Laura, thanks for your comment! Sounds like you have a pretty cool job. The mix I am using for my jumps is all soil from the site. If I dig about 1 foot down I have a great mix of clay and what I think is decomposed granite in some places. When creating the smooth surface I sieve all the larger rocks out. The surface doesn't stay butter smooth like in the video after heavy rain but it has been holding up against erosion well. I find the more bikes ride acoss it the smoother it stays. My first jump that I built using this method is about 1 year old now and the edges have rounded but the actual ride surface is still as hard as concrete without a lot of wear at all. I am really pleased so far. Thank you for watching.
What a Chanel! I just stumbled across this video I have some catching up to do 😉
Stoked you found it and like it mate. Hopefully have a new episode out for you within a week.
@@cutlaps sweet!
amazing jump

Thanks Mike! Good to be back out building and riding again.
sick trail, I just got a new MTB and I'm super excited to ride my first trail, hupefully it happens soon🤞
Very cool! What bike did you get?
Cool!
Thanks
Love that there are mines/mullock heaps on your land!
My old man is a prospector and has had several mines throughout my childhood so this strikes a real cord, always loved riding over the old mounds and such!
The spider climbing over the camera is so Aussie 🤣 and it really did look like Aggie saw it and freaked out!
You've outdone yourself with the trowel work on this one. Looks amazing!
Let's be honest now, how many times did you role up to this one before you hit it??
If it was first go then bravo! Good stuff 😁
This jump looks amazing and you look like you had a heap of fun riding it!
Love reading all these comments as you go threw all the episodes. It's great.
Thats so cool your dad is a prospector. I loved exploring the mines around here as a kid. Actually I still love exploring the mines around here.
I don't think i even needed to roll up to that one actually. But only because before I built the dirt kicker I had used my portable kicker to work out the shape and distance so I was already pretty confident on it. And I was feeling pretty good when I first set up the portable kicker after a good session elsewhere.
I still feel pretty average at jumps though. There are some days when I just don't feel right on my portable kicker. I really don't ride it enough. To busy with work and building to actually ride haha.
Cool by Sam
Thanks Sam!
Nice editing work your channel is growing well
Cheers! Any more updates on your backyard trails? I would love to see some more of it.
@@cutlaps no sorry been very buisy building awning on my house and I did one on my son’s house and we have had a lot of rain over the last couple of months so riding has been limited
@@walkaboutturtle9102 Yeah it has been a rather wet summer here as well. Which I am not complaining about, much better than being on fire 2 years ago.
Bro said mmm chocolate cake
Hahah it did look like tasty icing
You are amazing
Hahah thanks mate, I'm not too sure about that though.
Where is this Cutlaps
The mines are out the back of a small town called Wollumla, and the trail is on private property. Thanks for watching.

Cheers Eoin!
Love the paste on the jump 👌
It came out so nice! Should last for a good while.
Hi
Hello
Yes! More Cutlaps! Nice shovel flip at 1:17
Your dogs reactions to spider and then dirt were great, nice touch with the thought bubbles, they could be a little longer, I had to go back. That was really cool how you incorporated gold shafts and event sifted for gold too. That jump turned out awesome, looks fun. Another fantastic edit!
Haha that's about the only flips you'll see me doing! Glad you enjoyed the thought bubbles. And I was surprised to find the footage of the spider crawling across the lens. Looks like the dog noticed haha.
@@cutlaps haha me either, maybe your dog will surprise use with a flip?
@@mattspen haha yeah maybe, she does get a little crazy
Rakehoe skills were also on point!
"Huummmmm, chocolate cake!" - Did anyone else think that before Luke said it? 🤣🤣
That was one tasty looking jump haha.

Thanks mate! This was a fun little build. I actually went back and reshaped the jump to be a bit bigger.

That dawg is almost as funny as you Luke! Cracking entertainment!
Haha yeah she's got a pretty funny personality. And loves to sit on fresh dirt! Always in the way haha.
@@cutlaps haha my dog is exactly the same, so observant and always underfoot, guess I can expect it with border collie kelpie but wish i had his energy! Big call but I reckon your dog puts Seths Oscar to the Test.....nah can't compare trail dogs!
@@lukesteele7095 I grew up with border collies. Love them, and you’re right… sooo much energy. Haha I love Oscar, he’s such a little nugget.
Butter smooth take off. Looks great.
Thanks. We have had a lot of rain the last couple of days and it has held up perfect! It's a fun little gap.
That doesn’t look too bad, I could probably hit it after some practice. Very cool!
Hey Jessy. Hope your trails have dried out now. The new jump is pretty smooth and does most of the work for you if you hit it with the correct speed. It is a bit bigger than it looks on camera though
@@cutlaps Dried out? It's the middle of winter, there's a couple inches of snow over the trails. However I did rent a fat bike today, it was pretty dope. I crashed a couple times, but falling in the snow doesn't hurt at all, so it was a really cool experience. Definitely makes you ride a bit more dangerously than you should!
@@Jydmd hahah thought it may have started to thaw out but I guess not. That does sound like fun!
1:48 why I will never ever live in Australia
Haha it's not that bad. I've only been bitten by 7 spiders and 2 snakes.
@@cutlaps yeah still no
@@HarryHamster63 🤣
Love the progression! Can't wait to see the next video! (I missed this one.. so I'm catching up)
This was just a quicky. I think lots of people missed it because there were a couple of months over Christmas where I didn't post anything. Glad you found it.
What a dream to have some property like this!! Just found your channel today mate, keen to see more 👌
Thanks mate! Stoked you found my channel. This property is perfect for trails. I'm crazy lucky to be able to build here.
