In my experience, the Dunning-Kruger Effect is frequently invoked to dispel the cognitive dissonance that arises when one encounters an individual who confidently holds a contrary viewpoint. More often than not, it is used as a lazy shortcut. You should seek to question others about their facts and question yourself about your convictions.

This is why I believe more schools should offer "free" chess instruction. Not because chess = smart, but because it can improve everyone's mindset and thinking ability, regardless of their base level. It's also a very humbling game/sport. By the way Scott, you spelled Kruger as "Krueger" in the description. Keep up the great work!

Just a heads up, this is Justin Krugger's work. David Dunning explained it better as "The Flawed Evaluator Problem". It's a weird one as most people speaking upon oddly demonstrate the effect at play, however, the "effect" has little to do with the actual research. As David Dunning more or less said, that's an interesting idea, but that's not what our work demonstrated. That said, The Ness, aka Neurologica Blog, has a piece titled 'Lessons from Dunning-Kruger that hits at it well enough. In some ways, maybe even better thand Dunning himself has. At least in terms of use. That also said, David Dunning's lectures are on RUclips, and are a better source to understanding the research.
To me, this is an overconfidence problem. It applies to everyone, even more so experts. Forget his name at the moment, but one of the leading experts on biases and cognitive distortions more or less said being aware of these problems has yet to rid me of these ills. It's more of a way of understanding our flaws than for use as a pejorative or means to devaluing other people's opinions.
“…incompetent people do not recognize-scratch that, cannot recognize-just how incompetent they are,” - David Dunning; Taken from the piece I mentioned from, however, it's also contained in one of his many lectures on RUclips.
Anyway, in use I think of it like this: We're all very incompetent at judging other people's competence. If one is in the 99th percentile, it's highly unlikely the majority of people are going to understand a word they have to say on a given subject. Sure, they might have off the charts intelligence levels. They might be experts at language and more. That doesn't mean they have any level of understanding of Other Minds. Meaning, they might be lacking in the ability to articulate at a level their audience is going to understand. Would go on, but the research boils down to this: Unless we ourselves are an expert in that subject matter, we're unable to properly judge another person's expertise.
Granted, all of that said. This is just my opinion on the research. Dunning did later to go on to confirm the effect. I don't remember at the moment what that research was called.

Thanks for the video. I want to put down some feedback about how it's done. Hope it will make a positive impact that will increase your popularity for wider spread of science good ideas.
I admit that you was reading your text. That is a great help to have one cuz not all of us can think and talk as fast as it need to feed short limit of the video on the Internet without some losses of people's attention. But another side of the coin is that you lose the price of standing up in the camera as you yourself as an interesting person who knows much and wise with all that books behind. If you will be able to record without reading so even if you will be doing very small cuts like 5 or 10 seconds long, it will be much more truthfull. Just a view from my perspective.

Most ironic video in the history of videos is a little over confident don't you think? I find Cluster B's tend to think insightfulness is ironic. Seemingly because they lack it. Then they overconfidently say the ignorant thing out loud in a way that's clearly wrong. Then they double down. Will you double down?

Speaking out in favor of truth while someone with millions of fans, and millions of dollars to deploy against me is a lot more courageous than anything you've probably ever done in your life. Certainly more corageous than you posting anonymous troll comments on videos you don't like.
