- Tips I learned from my open heart surgery!
My favorite books that I read during my recovery:
Anxious for Nothing by Max Lucado
Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen
It's Not Supposed to be This Way by Lysa Terkeurst

Make sure your recliner is electrically operated. You won’t be able to move the manual lever one.
Hi. I had AVR one month ago. All that you are saying is very true and your tips are great. I did not expect as much fluid retention as I had post surgery so, upon leaving the hospital my slip on sneakers did not fit! Thankfully, the fluid did go away within a week or two. Thank you for your tips. I wish I had seen this video prior to my surgery as Iearned everything the hard way,
Make sure you buy a good recliner that has a high seat and that reclines a lot. You will probably live in this chair for the first 4 weeks
thank you, some great information because I believe I need to have the surgery in the next two months.
The hospital where I had my surgery gave me a heart pillow.
My avr was last Wednesday. On-x mechanical valve and aortic repair at 36yrs old. I finally showered yesterday when I got home. My wife had to help me of course but, oh man did it feel good to finally get clean!
My first night's sleep at home was in a recliner. I got 6 straight hours. Totally awesome compared to what I was getting in the hospital.
Loving your videos so far! Keep up the good work!
Great to hear!! Thank you!!
Great job, very informative
I can’t believe you went thru all this. I’m afraid I have open heart might be in my future. 😳I’m scared.
Two time open heart surgery survivor here! Great tips!
Wow amazing!! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm 49 year old female and now 7 weeks into recovery from my emergency aortic dissection repair & valve replacement and I did not have any time to prepare either! All of your recommendations are great and anyone who can prepare should definitely do every one of them. I was in the ICU with only the nurse brushing my teeth for 4 days, but as soon as I got to the PCU they MADE me take a shower every day. Excruciating but necessary. I'm still struggling with pressure and some pain every day, but have hope that one day it will be better. I'm actually looking forward to cardiac rehab soon, which like you, I also hope to help with my negative mindset. I will check out your book recommendations as well! Thanks again. ~Angelica
Thank you for watching Angelica! The first few months after dissection are tough emotionally and physically but it does get better over time. Wishing you the best in your healing journey!
Very helpful cleaning advice. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago. I don't shower but clean up under arms and legs junction by soaping up and wet towel swipe just that area. Also washed up /shampoo my head.
Thank you for your advice. God bless you.❤
Yes!!! Awesome tips and great video!
Thank you!
@kelsvlife : So happy to see the video of woman survivor😊. Has there been any changes in your menstrual cycle or period due to the intake of warfarin?
Not many changes, a bit heavier but otherwise normal!
I’m a full back sleeper with arms over my head lol 😊
Full healing of the sternum takes a YEAR. That is for any bone healing. Initial healing is 6-8 weeks.
Sternum restrictions (driving, lifting hands above head) are 6-8 weeks. I personally did not have any restrictions past that or issues with my sternum in general and I’m almost 3 years out of surgery. Definitely follow your doctor’s recommendations!

Just had open heart surgery less than 2 weeks ago. The hospital I went to was top notch. The 3rd day the nursing staff gave me a sponge bath. In another video I saw, a patient said if they offer u a sponge path, take it. It will make u feel a better so I did & she was right.Day 4-6, the nursing staff would bring me & a chair to the bathroom so I could wash myself-face, arms, armpits, private area. The nurse washed my back & bottom if I had trouble. Then a fresh hospital gown was put on. It did make me feel better. I did bring my own wet wipes but I didnt need to use them. They comes very helpful after you need to go #2 bc you want to clean your butt & the wet cloth just makes things so much easier. Just toss them into the trash not the toilet. If you dont have any, ask the nursing staff to bring you some or ask a relative to pick up wipes or buy them b4 you go in for any surgery. Walmart sells them very cheap. You can just buy 1 pack or you can buy a pack or 3 or 6. They are good to wash yor face, hands, butt, etc. They are also good for car trips. In fact, I keep the Walmart wipes around my house & in my car all the time. You can't keep your hands too clean these days as covid is still out there. Dont worry about clothes . You should be in a fresh hospital gown every day. You will probably have 3 chest tubes in you like I did & when they get pulled out it might be a little messy. I also had a temporary pacemaker with wires to my heart & when that gets removed, it's the same thing. Thats why I say forget about button down clothes for the hospital. You only need fresh clothes to go home in.
I am also having surgery . I am so nervous .
Was the collapsed lung expected from this kind of surgery/ordeal. 🥺❤️
None of it was expected! But I’ve read that it does happen to many people
Yes, the lungs must be collapsed to gain access to the heart.
