    When working renaissance faires we had our own version of "I found it in a bunker" (with an event that tried to compete with Wasteland Weekend theirs was "I found it in a crashed truck" when justifying off-the-rack surplus clothing, or my favorite "We aren't trying to be Wasteland Weekend")...you'd have someone show up in your guild with something much too fancy for their social status and her them say "I got it off a dead Spaniard."

    On your last point, I attend Dystopia Rising and we have a stain called a Vegasian, which is essentially how you'd see a Vegas street rat after the apocalypse. Bright(wannabe) colors, gross clashes in colors, terrible patterns, jewelry that has been broken and put back together, and other nasty things.

    • @lyantogrin

      I think it was on the various event types making sure that you matched your costuming to the event and trying new things. Continuing with the example of Dystopia Rising there is so much variety in the various Strains and communities that there is almost no costume that can't fit the world if you play the right Strain and concept. Seriously you can have a shield wall that runs the gamut from scrap metal medieval inspired gear to guys wearing furs, leather, and flowers to someone in camo with bits of armor hanging from a military harness (I have actually seen this fighting formation). Also someone may have a different interpretation of a Strain, like with the above Vegasian example maybe they prefer dressing in loose billowing clothes designed to breath and be cool in a very hot area while not exposing skin to the sun.

    *PIRATE APOCALYPSE?!* OH, BOI, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE JUST STARTED. I guess I know what I'll be doing next.
    About black stuff... I've used a black coat for a costume-cosplay. It's from a book about an inquisitor Mordimer Madderdin. It's a fantasy book series, and one of the few distinct characteristics of this character is a wide brim hat and a black cape with a silver cross. I tried to do a postapo version of that, and it almost worked. Almost, because when I tried to distress it (the coat), it didn't exactly work well... Any physical destruction went ok, but dirtying it was a pain and I still didn't achieve a good result. But it was mainly for a fantasy convention Pyrkon, not a larp. If it were for a larp, I'd put much more effort into it to make it look good. But then it would be way more work than it's worth. I've used a lot of black paint just to attach any dirt to it, then some old poster paint (the stuff that children use in school art lessons xD) to add highlights and to paint the cross, and then I applied a few light strokes of sky blue spray paint that I had leftover from a previous cosplay for some more highlights and to add dimension to it. I'm not exactly satisfied with it, especially wht some of the red-ish stuff, a bit too concentrated in some places, but I had to finish it in two days xD Never make your costumes right before the event. Overall I'd give it a 6/10 (3/5 due to fractional shortening). It's a pass, but I'll make it better for the 2018 Pyrkon. Or I'd make something else, dunno. I've posted a short video on my channel where I show it. I won't throw it away completely, I think I'll just get some proper non-black paint (which was all I had atm xD) and better dust. Using old poster paint was not a good idea. Luckily, that stuff can be washed completely, so I can start from scratch :3 (I've learned that the hard way - I washed my clothes almost right before the event, which meant that I had to rush and remake it in a bit over a day xD That's why it doesn't look as good as it could).
    Black is a bitch if you want it dirty. And 100% polyester coats are a bitch to distress, both with dirt and with destruction, I've spent a bit over 4 days trying to distress it, and it still looks worse than 100% cotton, green pants on which I've spent only like 2-3hours :/
    As for camo... well, it's not that simple. What I've noticed is that Postapo community is harsh on camo stuff, because it's too military looking, and it's all "from the bunker". But here's the thing - walk around in public, and I guarantee you, you'll see someone in camo. Not necessarily full on military stuff, but there are pants in camo even in mainstream shops. A lot of metalheads wear camo pants. It's very common. I know, that dislike of modern camo is from newbies that are into airsoft and have played some stalker and think a gasmask, camo uniform and maybe a bandage on the arm is enough, but if distressed properly it's not that bad, especially when it comes to pants. It would actually be easier to find those than heavy duty military belts xD Although it's faaaar easier to make some stuff look good, like old, 1960-1980's army surplus gear rather than modern camo, which would be even harder than with black stuff, I guess

    • @NuclearSnailStudios
      @NuclearSnailStudios  7 лет назад +5

      i somehow also aways end up makign at least SOME clothes 1 minute before the event ;:D every effin time haha..
      and yeah @ camo.. but its never about "realism"... in fact, on a fantasy event i went to this summer i played an eastern guy.. but didnt take my shemagh - they probably exiosted back then, but a shemagh just LOOKS liek "modern punk / US operator in afghanistan / hipster fashion guy" accessoire.. so yeah.. sometimes the more "realistic" thign is to be less literalyl realistic .D

    • @zxyatiywariii8
      @zxyatiywariii8 6 лет назад +1

      With black stuff (even my hair, which is too shiny-black for post-apocalyptic realism) I've found campfire ashes are a good way to make blackness look worn and weathered. Ashes can also add texture when affixed in layers and coated with clear spray on fabric, and with hairspray on anything where you want the look to be temporary and removable.

  • @icydrouge6674

    I used an old army jacket and joggers in camo print that ended up getting so torn up after paintball and hunting and cleaning the after hunt that honestly it’s making it out to be a great upcycle to use it in my first wastelander outfit. Have redyed both with tans before throwing it into the dirt and dust some more and it took pretty well on both. Although I am making a large patch on the back that says “northern hunteress” with a deer skull using my embroidery machine. The camo is kinda seen but unless you’re really looking at it you can’t see it under the redye job Love the video btw!

  • @silviasd_88
    @silviasd_88 3 года назад +1

    Nice video and very good tips!
    Also if you are afraid to purchase a dedicated piece of costume (like trousers/shirt/jacket/etc) bc of the cost go to vintage market, buy used clothes, upcycle that oltre shirt that is lying unused in your wardrobe for years: is cost effective and probably is already a little distressed. Didn't watch yet the other video, so I don't know if you already mention this.
    Also, distressing and destroying things for your costume is kind of therapeutic if you tear apart the fabric thinking of whatever made you angry that day 🤣

    Thrift stores and good will are great for easy throw away clothes to use and sometimes you can find cool old stuff that gives your outfit an extra bit of character. And also if you ruin some of your normal clothes while working or whatever you can save them for your outfit. Military surplus stores and scrap yards are great too. My stuff isn't super dirty but the pants are definitely stained from years of being used for work in the army and in my jobs after. But everything is a bit distressed and in many cases like big rips I've made serviceable but kinda rough looking repairs with patches of random material frome cloth to old rubber, wire, thread or duct tape . I feel like a survivor would try to maintain their equipment as much as possible even if it's not in the most ideal way. I just prefer to not be super crusty looking like I crawled out of a mud pit a few hours ago but to each their own. 🙂

    I'm thinking about putting together some german WWI uniform stuff, like a modern chest rig over a ripped up trench coat and a dented fake rusted picklehaube and some more modern stuff and carry a fake mp-08 and if I make a car it would be a van with a pop up machine gun nest and iron crosses on the side and have it armored to look like some sort of armored car from WWI but it's like if a reenactor was in the apocalypse

    • @Thunderchicken69
      @Thunderchicken69 7 лет назад +1

      Like blank fire guns on the car and the one I carry because we could start two WWI tribes at WW and have me (germans) and someone else (British) and everyone would wear appoclipseised WWI uniforms and we could fight out in the desert and the blank fires look and sound like real guns but they're barrels aren't strong enough for a real bullet to go in, they would shatter, but take blanks which are essentially real bullets but without the part that shoots out, it only makes a fire and makes an explosion so basically a real gun that is exactly like a real gun but it just doesn't fire a projectile.

    Soooo... Basically build a foundation for the outfit, get to a point where your comfortable, slowly ease into accepting constructive criticism, knock down the "building", go back to the foundation, build it up again but better with the skills you've gained and helpful ideas you've been given by supportive people, Rinse and repeat? And continue that process untill you get YOUR personal perfect outfit, your "Magnum Opas" persay, and then if you want to take those skills and join other communities that you find interesting before using the skills you gain in said communities to improve all your outfits and props?

    Und hast du vielleicht irgendwelche Hinweise
    für ein „elegantes“ Kostüm ? Ich habe alte kaputte schwarze Anzugschuhe, alte Anzughosen und eine
    alte seidene Weste mit einem großem Loch in der Seite. Ich brauche noch ein

    wenigstens mir ein paar Tipps dazu geben ?

    I'm sorry, but I have to disagree about the Camo. The first time camo was used in war, or at least attempted to was in the 1800's. However, camo has effectively been used in combat since WW2. In a realistic setting, any sort of military clothing would actually be worth gold, specifically because it offers protection against the environment (Hence why guerrilla fighters, hunters and survivalists often flock to it).
    I do get what you're saying, it would be awkward seeing someone show up in camo that was just established like a month ago or something like that, but there is a plethora of old camo out there that lots of people probably don't even realize existed. Here's a list of some camo used pre-1990's (some either recently being decommissioned or still in use):
    WW2 Camo:
    Sumpftarn Camo
    Splinter Camo
    Splinter B Camo
    Oakleaf Camo
    Blurred Edge Camo
    Plane Tree Camo
    HBT Dot Camo
    Autumn Oakleaf Camo
    Italian Camo
    US HBT Camo
    1960's Camo
    British Disruptive Pattern (1960-2016)
    US Tiger Stripe Camo (1964-Present)
    Other Pre-90's
    US Woodland Camo (1981-2005)

    one thing that bugs me with costumes is the constant inclusion of gas masks.
    yes, they look cool, and yes, I DO collect them, but you need a reason for it, not just to have one.
    if you're gonna have a mask, have a story with it, maybe you're lungs were damaged and you need the mask to stay alive, or wear it some of the time.
    and also, make sure you aren't using soviet era filters.

    • @Antiganos
      @Antiganos 7 лет назад

      Well they sort of self-justify themselves, in a post-nuclear apocalypse a gas mask would help filter out radioactive fallout, so pretty much everybody would have a reason to wear one.

    • @lunageek520
      @lunageek520 7 лет назад

      well that is true, but i'm talking all over, you almost always see a gas mas k for no reason.
      I saw a short film a while back "Elegy" and the main guy is wearing a mask while no one else is.
      it's just a ridiculously overused cliche

    • @Antiganos
      @Antiganos 7 лет назад

      I understand your viewpoint, I'm not a huge gas mask fan myself, but there's a legitimate reasoning behind wearing one in a post-nuke world, and if you're the only one wearing one (like in Elegy), it's probably because you're lucky enough to have found one, not everybody has em just laying around. So in short, you don;t have to like it, but it makes sense as far as protecting yourself against whatever destruction your apocalypse has left behind, whether that's fallout, chemicals, just dust, or whatever. Obviously something like a Walking Dead setting makes less sense for gas masks, but most apocs kind of give survivors a reason for it. Also, they look cool, and if people making costumes want to use them, why not, practical, and cool, that's how we roll in the end of the world!

    • @lunageek520
      @lunageek520 7 лет назад

      well the thing is, there doesn't seem to be a reason for him to be wearing one.
      I agree of course that they work for the costumes, and I tend to include one in mine, just because it adds a nice aesthetic. I simply prefer it when there is a story behind the mask.
      As a mask collector, these things bother me a bit

    • @Antiganos
      @Antiganos 7 лет назад

      Totally understand mate, story maybe doesn't explain it well if I remember, but the description does tell us that "nature evolved to kill humans" so I suppose the main character is attempting to survive in a biosphere that doesn't appreciate his existence. But yes, as a filmmaker I totally vibe with the "if it doesn't serve the story, why is it there" aspect.

      And im currently also looking to get smth apocalyptic to wear to go out with the boys and such (cant for work since i have a work uniform and for school max i can do is BDU pants with somewhat bootslooking shoes, but more streetwear)
      I usually wore military like clothes in my life so far, say, boots, cargo/BDU Pants, army jackets, etc and i love apocalyptic and militarystyles the same, apocalyptic maybe even more.
      I didnt expect to get that excited to actually type more than a sentence.
