Love this album. When you "get" Dillinger something just clicks in your head. I feel Dillinger has the "feel" of those Norwegian Avant-garde Black Metal bands, mixed with somewhat 90's "Grunge", intensity of 80's Hardcore, a little bit Aphex Twin and Venetian Snares electronica and a sprinkle of 70's experimental Bowie or Brian Eno on the top. One of the bands that took me the longest to get into. I still remember the day I "got" it, reading the lyrics to Farewell Mona Lisa while listening to the track, and "pow", eternal fan. Glad I got to see them twice before they split up. If you like the Jazz parts I think they did them best on their last record before they split-up.
I’d go as far to say that Dillinger is one of the greatest bands of all time. Their complexity and intensity, and somehow their ability to keep the chaotic nature of their music “controlled” in a sense is something that few bands have ever been able to match Really looking forward to the One Of Us Is The Killer reaction, in my opinion, that album is easily their best work.
So glad you are continuing your Dilinger voyage. I think this is their most approachable album. I love all of the catalog but this one stands out for sure. Great reaction as always.
This is definitely their most fun/playful album while also featuring some of their most insane moments. The aggression reaches almost comical levels only to be followed by some of their poppiest sections. One of the best efforts in their catalog, but I also feel like I can revisit each of their albums and say the same thing. Looking forward to your review of One of Us is the Killer!
Glad you enjoyed the album! It’s definitely one of the most ambitious they ever produced. Greg did a majority of the vocals. I believe Jeff Tuttle, their touring guitarist at the time, did backing vocals on Farewell, Mona Lisa and the main vocals on Parasitic Twins. Also, the band’s original singer Dimitri did the artwork for the album. Pretty awesome stuff!
@@CurlyWolf_ I know Greg's voice very well and can say than the soft vocales at the beginnig are Greg. On credits of "Option Paralysis" Jeff only sings 2dn voices and some main voices in "Parasitic Twins" feat Greg, also is the writter of that song.
Yeah TDEP is such an incredible band, I love the sound they have and all of the variety that they infuse in their music. So glad I'm finally discovering them!
I was starting to think you would never get around to Option Paralysis, Molly! I'm so glad you listened to it. This is my favourite Dillinger Escape Plan album and I've listened to it hundreds of times over. Thanks for reacting to it!
Yessss! My favorite dillinger song, i sing this one in the car all the time. Every song has something fun and spastic, i love their start and stops and the rhythm of the whole thing. Farwell mona lisa, gold teeth, crystal morning, room full of eyes are my favorites. You should do a solo reaction to their fan/concert only song "happiness is a smile" before you do one of us is the killer, since that song came out in between those albums and its a cant miss track. Thanks for the reaction molly.
This album gets me emotional listening to it. It’s like the cry to humanity we all need which is still relevant to today. I appreciate your intentional listening to this band. They have such a visceral manic energy that a lot of people cannot handle.
@@mollyesanborn Back in the 90's I wanted to get a Sepultura tattoo, but they split up before I could. I swore that day never to get a band tattoo. Fast forward to 2015 and I got a Dillinger Escape Plan tattoo and then they announced their last album 2 years later! I'm sorry everyone, it's all my fault!
Great album from one of the best live bands ever to tread the boards, their frenetic rat-a-tat style ruled...so enjoy your reactions Molly, looking forward to more! 😊
I love when people can appreciate the intricacies of Dillinger Escape Plan. Following along and hearing your thoughts and opinions made this entertaining. Liked. Subscribed.
Around this time they covered and Perforemed “wish” live with NiN at Bonnaroo and other shows. Greg and Ben are both fans of NiN. Trent gave a glowing introduction about them being a band with the best live show he has ever seen.
You mentioning NiN reminds me. You need to listen to the live version of Evacuation from his solo album, Child Soldier, creator of God. It is 100% peak Nine Inch Nails
Oh man, Dillinger. There are no words. I got into them around One of Us is the Killer in 2013 and was lucky enough to see them on their final tour for Dissociation in 2017. But they are truly one of the most insanely talented, original and innovative bands not just in metal but music as a whole. You're right, the way they juxtapose slower, more melodic and jazz elements with that absolutely mental marthcore style is incredible. I honestly don't know which of their albums I like the most. I know most people say Ire Works, but I have a soft spot for One of Us is the Killer because it was the album that got me into them. Anyway, I can't wait for your reactions to their last 2 albums, and I hope you do Greg Puciato's band The Black Queen, which I guarantee is nothing like Dillinger, and also his 2 solo albums.
You should upload the unedited versions of your reactions because we wanna rock out with you. Cuts are expected but play the whole tracks. I know it would be a long video lol. Idk, just a suggestion but either way you're doing an awesome job and also picking incredible stuff to listen to.
Hi Molly, thanks for your reactions, have you heard about Russian band called Psychea? They playing some surreal core stuff on 2 part album "Songs of Slums of Hope of Broken Hearts"
This album was way better than I expected. I thought for sure they couldn't top Ire Works, and while I can't say this one was better, it's still really fun to listen to and I enjoy it every time. Also, love that headbanging at 1:44 lol
Ok, I think it's high time you added "Ween" to your list if you haven't already! Their albums Pure Guava, The Pod, and God Ween Satan are must listens! (Well all their albums are, but those ones in particular)
Maybe my second fav by dillinger? One of us still takes the cake tho, you will be blown away ;) Also, btw, it might be more of a one off video but any chance you might consider checking out “the anatomy of addiction” by the band God? It’s an industrial metal, avant-garde jazz fusion kinda album, but it sounds like it was drug from hell up to earth. But beyond being super dark and sinister, it’s layered in tons of tiny little details which I think you’d love. Regardless, love your content! Excited for more. …and yes, the band really is named ‘God’ haha!
Its been a long time since I've heard some these tracks! Love all of their albums but I don't get around to this one as much. I remember thinking greg was the MVP of this album because of how much he delivered on the vocals but whats also cool about this album is that its Billy Rymers debut (the drummer that would go on to stay with them till they broke up). Looking forward to your review of One of Us is the Killer!
Wait your reactions on Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Devin Townsend and Diablo Swing Orchestra! But aclually you should started this comedy-rock journey with Frank Zappa, maybe.
@@mollyesanborn hope you will enjoying all of that stuff! Also I remember bands like The Residents and Cardiacs that was making something close but earlier in 70s and 80s.
@@mollyesanborn The link between The Dillinger Escape Plan and Faith No More is very real. Mike Patton has done the vocals parts on the entire second EP of Dillinger Escape Plan (his cover of Aphex Twin "Come To Daddy" is memorable) and Greg Puciato has shown a undeniable influence of Patton in his very changing and dynamic vocals.
Most people can’t make it through a single TDEP song. That you can listen to whole albums and appreciate what they’re doing is remarkable. Looking forward to the next one.
This was my introduction to Dillinger Escape Plan, it's such a fantastic record from beginning to end. However I should single out the track Widower as I think it's my personal favorite on the album. The composition is just a masterpiece with some great piano work by Mike Garson (who played on a handful of Bowie's best albums). Also, I believe Ben (Dillinger guitarist) called Option his favorite Dillinger record, hell of a choice.
I’m so glad you finally got around to reviewing another Dillinger album. Out of all their albums with Greg, I find this one to be the red-headed stepchild; not as grandiose as Miss Machine, not as tastefully jazzy as Ire Works, and not as in-your-face technically indomitable as One of Us Is The Killer. This dynamic gives the whole album a disjointed but highly emotive feeling which stands out in DEP’s catalog. Some of the individual songs here (Farewell, Mona Lisa and Room Full of Eyes) are among the best they ever put down with Greg, giving this album some undeniable cache.
Hey Molly, you might also enjoy the bands The Number Twelve Looks Like You and Genghis Tron. Mongrel and Board up the House are very unique albums with lots of twists on metalcore. Since you really enjoyed Converge, you also should check out Botch, which is a really important band in this subgenre of metal/hardcore.
next album(one of us is the killer) is their magum opus.... one of the few perfect albums out there.....trust me if i tell you they basically make every song on it is HIT.....probably my most playable album ever!...it hits like the first time every play!

However you decide to do it though they are ABSOLUTELY a band worth checking out, all of their albums that I've heard so far have been amazing!
Yes, I've heard their music and absolutely love them! Never got a chance to do an album reaction but I did do a review for I Let It In And It Took Everything a while back on my channel if you're interested :)
