I love how Data's rambling manages to annoy the ship's COMPUTER to the point that it tells him to shut up in its own way.
That is the only moment that the computer shows any sign of sentience, interjecting without having been directed a question.
The reason they never reused these villains it’s because they were reworked into the Borg, but originally their threat and the borg threat were the same
"Yes...I'm sure he will..." then he laughs like Vincent Price.
Definitely wasn't expecting the last 20 minutes of this episode to turn into The Thing meets Scanners. The only major fault in the writing was introducing an existential threat to every humanoid species in the galaxy, only for them to be defeated and forgotten by the next episode.
I always wondered why the transporter didn't catch the bluegill when Admiral Quinn came to the ship.
Good point
Or Remmick when he and Quinn first visited the Enterprise. The man was literally filled with them and the mother creature. 🤔
Conspiracy was the first episode of TNG I ever saw. I was a kid and I knew *nothing* about Star Trek. It was a memorable experience!
Aww man What a Experience
Dude seriously, it was the first episode I saw, just parts of it, as a kid; and when the show came up talking to a friend I was like "oh yeah that show where they shoot ppl with lasers and weird bugs come out of them"...which would have been fine with me btw.
The tone of the show combined with this odd episode was a real mindfuck as a first exposure.
Originally the blue gill monsters were the Borg.
5:35 That scene always makes me laugh, like that's really the sound you'd make if someone roundhoused you in face xD
In the 80s when this aired, there was a craze of toy monster creation playsets using toxic chemicals to make slimy, squishy monsters and bugs that looked like poisonous candles and gummies. I always believed that the props department probably used these Kit's to create those sad looking alien bug creatures. They did have a very limited budget, and building the sets took up most of it. Robert Schenkann probably got sick from just having that thing in his mouth. No wonder Picard grimaced. It probably smelled like ass too.
I had a creepy crawlers kit in the early 90s and I still vividly remember the smell.
In retrospect, there was one other element that seemed weird. If Quinn beams aboard with one of those brain bugs in that folder, why exactly wouldn't the transporter chief freak the hell out that there's another lifeform being transported aboard?
Excellent point.
I heard that when Patrick Stewart did this scene at 9:01 he accidently knocked the female captain's arm back it went to far back and injured the actress she was reacting in real pain . and when the admiral was running away in the hallway when his back is to us and when he is phasered in the back by Picard and Riker and when he falls down it is a stunt double .
Actually even before HD the stunt doubles in that fight scene were amusingly noticeable.
This episode did air in the UK in its initial run, though it cut after Picard and Riker shoot at Remmick, so none of the giblets were shown (partly because it was going out at 6pm and nothing too graphic can be shown before 9pm).
I thought the automatic doors were meant to be part of the structure of the ship when closed and be radiation-proof and explosion-proof. Here they look like barely mounted oblongs of polystyrene.
Poor Remmick…He just seeks “Peaceful Coexistence”.
No they seek "PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE" he's just along for the ride 😅
"We come in peace!"
"You go in pieces!"
What I don't understand is when Riker was calling for security and it's Worf and Geordi arriving as backup. They're not in security, especially Worf since he didn't become head of security until the next season.
In Germany, the more graphic bits of the disintegration of Remmick were cut out for a very long time, but restored at some point in the 2000s.
10:30 So anyway, we just started blastin..
1:16
Riker: Go to warp 6.
Jordi: Aye sir, full impulse.
What?
It was so gruesome for TNG it was quite a shock
Captain Tryla Scott. Picard said she made captain faster than anyone else, himself included. If Trek wanted to make a kick-ass woman of color captain, they should have built a series around her. That would have made sense, been in continuity and they wouldn't have to retcon the whole universe with Michael Burnam. ... just put her on the opposite end of a federation and set it in the same time. Would have been so good. I want to know more about her.
Nah don’t care about her.
Yeah, the “We seek peaceful coexistence” (with the menacing expression) was lazy writing. These aliens took over Starfleet Command and they think THAT line will make humans say “Oh! We’re sorry! We TOTALLY misunderstood your intentions!”
I remember when this episode first aired in the US, there was a repeated warning on the television, sort of like a emergency broadcast system test, that warned of the content of the episode. It made this episode quite memorable.
to the creators of this show, I was rewatching the series and stumbled on this, and I've started watching this instead.
other people have said this on other videos, but I want to say it to. I enjoy the commentary even if I don't always agree. watching these videos and listening to the commentary is like watching the episodes with a friend. You're having a lot of the same conversation I'd have with a friend while watching these. and pointing out things I didn't notice. like:
Riker will show you to your room. pulls Riker to another room so that he isn't showing the admiral to his room. lol.
I love this series so much.
The problem isn't the angle of the kicks, but the fact that he keeps doing the same kicks over and over when they fail.
2:27 .... Always LOVED the lighting on Picard here.
I always felt like this episode would have been a great plot for a TNG feature length film.
I was also bummed out we never got this episode in the UK originally.
Good video. I enjoyed the pacing & humor. I think this STTNG episode may be revisited with Picard this season. There’s a bunch of evidence. Picards old pal Walker Keel tells him not to trust anyone. Beverly says this in the new teaser and another character asks “Is anyone you know, still them?” The antagonist says we shall have “vengeance” which is understandable considering Riker & Picard destroyed the mother creature. The Shrike ship has pincer like things on the front. The parasites could probably infect multiple species. Beverly knew the most about their physiology so she could be a target.
4:23
I...is that background crew member wearing 50% of a SPACE ROMPER?
9:35 No mention that both Picard and Riker shoot the admiral in the butt with their phasers?
It's too bad they didn't do more episodes like this in the early seasons. It had a B-movie horror feel to it. But it's infinitely better than the frequent bad episodes of season 1, which were just boring.
7:18 Worf's the one who asked Geordi if he's alright, not Dr. Crusher.
At about 1 minute into the show this dialogue occurs.
Riker : What is our eta at Pacifica, Mr La Forge?
La Forge : 22 hours 14 minutes sir.
Riker : Increase to Warp 6
La Forge : Aye sir, full impulse.
🤔 wut???
Good catch.
The guys blind, give him a break.

Loved everything about this! Even the crazy awesome thumbnail! I laughing mechanic through it all! Had to throw off my shiny blanket!
Definitely worth the deep run on this one!
This was one of the best Season 1 episodes. Glad your weren't stingy with with high marks.
IDK why they Never brung these Aliens back Future seasons
this always bugged me
PUN INTENDED
😂
why would secure offices
have doors with gaps at
the bottom ?
that would be a
security risk
of anyone just listening
at the bottom of the door
I saw on a Jackie Chan RUclips video how they do those kicks. It's basically a boot and pants leg on a stick.
This should have been the Season finale
Glad I stumbled onto this channel
Same dude.
Same with me
One of my many favorite TNG episodes. Thanks, Shittalkers.
5:59 freeze frame Riker does a high front kick there.
reminds me of something out of the National Lampoons movies.
@@ThePeacemaker848I always makes me think of the nakek gun.
I liked the episode despite the bad effects that were common in the first season. The fight scenes were typical TOS fights. They clearly had other actors fighting rather than the "stars" of the show. Kirk's double was rather obvious even back then. The acting wasn't all that great at times. There were the "why did they do that?" moments as well. At least the alien species was not the typical bipedal humanoid with a funky nose/forehead that was typical in the rest of the series (lazy and unimaginative that went against everything we know about biology). The small parasite gave off a "Ceti eel" vibe from "Star Trek : The Wrath of Kahn". They should have used it to infect the Borg in some way. There are a lot of plot vectors they could have taken with that. I've read that the species was "reworked" into the Borg, but even if it was, they could have had some fun with it by the Borg (attempting to) assimilate it (and maybe failing, with disasterlus results), the species taking the Borg over and using the Borg for their own nefarious plans, or somewhere in between. It was a good episode though.
Best Space fight ever, you heard of the Picard manoeuvre, that was the Riker Kick, also Beverly at her hottest shoot out of power, I had a huge crush on her all throughout TNG, but originally this set up was meant to be like a borg threat for later (I think). and for years and years in the UK the whole exploding head, and body was never shown, just cut out of it, and years later like mid to late 90's when sky TV showed TNG I was shocked over my dinner one night to see this episode as it was exploding head and all. but I never liked that sci fi trope of "ooh mother alien dies, all others do too" thats what spoiled Falling skies for me, it all seemed like a kool show right up to, Mother alien pops off, and all others too, imagine how bad Aliens would be, if they used that idea.
This WAS the borg, but the budget wasn't enough for them to be alien bugs so they were reworked into cyborgs before their full debut.
9:38 he wasn't old, about 47
I'd buy those gummies.
4:25 is that a dude in a starfleet skirt??
Yeah, we see that crewman in the female uniform a couple times in the background in several of the 1st season episodes.
the IMDB of this episode

the special effects guy

that cereal box
Yup in the UK heavily censored. The series aired in first run at 6pm.
Actually he should have said Nintendo Power was in the case.
These bugs were initially supposed to be the "Big bad" of the series, but the special effects weren't there, and the writers were worried they wouldn't be taken seriously and thus the Borg were created 🎉
I dont know if anyone has ever mentioned it before, but the parasitical race in this episode shares some similiarities with the Goauld from Stargate SG-1. The episode was released in 1988, 6 years before The Stargate movie and 9 years before Stargate SG-1. I wonder if this is where Stargate SG1 got the idea from.
6:12 I've got news for you, it was pretty damn noticeable, even back then.
Write letters to any filmmakers to make twenty to thirty different versions of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" 'Conspiracy' parodies please. Just about the (Neck Bulging) parts with real practical FX of course!
5:39 Is that Leslie Nielsen doing the stunt fighting?
He was quite a versatile performer.
Got the National Lampoon kicks in there so probably!
It's an entirely different kind of acting, altogether.
1:24 The number 47 reference.

the computer got annoyed with

As asserted by Mike Stoklasa, Star Trek is pretty much a sci-fi horror show. This is especially true of TOS and TNG.
Oh, that explains why I've never seen this. Startrek was a family show shown in the Uk on BBC 2 at 6pm. I guess they would think it was too much.
I vividly remember it being shown in that very slot when I was young, because it gave me nightmares! That must have been the edited episode- I remember the creature crawling into the mouth, and the bulging neck etc, but not the exploding head or the more extreme gore
@@SunburntHands Good memory. Maybe I just never saw this one.
I would say its only good because season one had a lot of lame episodes i don't hate season one like a lot of others do and i felt it had its moments. I thought it was entertaining and it shook things up. But when you think about it there are a lot of dumb moments to many scenes happened and i wondered why they doing this oh cause the writer needs it to happen . In terms of the stop motion and other vfx i can forgive a lot being a filmmaker and having almost not money to work with i can forgive some dodgy stop motion Ive done a lot of it and its hard. Alot of times when i see media that has little money to work with i can applaud the ingenuity rather then the end product
USS Horatio is the best name for a starship ever.
Horatio mourns for the Horatio (make Horatio great again).
I would agree with this being one of the best episodes season 1. His head exploding was awesome
I know this might be a bit of an ask, but I adore that thumbnail edit of the fruit snacks. Is just that image posted anywhere else I could save it from?
Bruce Lee doesn't hold a candle to Riker...
Yeah...the fight coordinator was a
Tai Chi instructor
@ 4:55, you can see the TOS film-era uniforms in the outside scenes of Starfleet Command. You think Paramount could have used a little extra money to re-touch those re-used clips from Star Trek IV, the Voyage home. Jeez. I can tell exactly what those people are wearing. I'm surprised you guys missed it.
@ 4:25 dude is in a skirt... that the kinda stuff you mean?
There was a rumor floating around for awhile that this was meant to be the Borg equivalent, but didn't get a sequel due to being too expensive to produce.
I guess it's not true since Memory Alpha doesn't acknowledge it, but I can see why it had legs for as long as it did. Now the story is that this parasite was associated with the Borg.
This is what I hated about the ending of this episode..why didn't they just beam the creacher to sick bay
Thanks for sharing the video
We had the PG version in the UK.
Is that Geordi's mother at the meeting?
A shame they dropped this story.
Yes it was banned in the UK. Hilariously
Everyone: Season 1 and 2 sucked. You: Give S1&2 episodes A and B ratings, and S4&5 D and F ratings.
4:25 There's a man in a skirt.
I always love datas copied fake reactions.😂
one of the weirdest episodes of trek, ever.
It was banned
Hmmm...a good episode, but A? B sounds more on par.
I didn't like this episode, it felt like the Super computer of Superman II, or other such, 'unbeatable enemies' which they beat in one episode. I always think of this as a prelude to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" Dominion war. Which is one of the reasons I never liked any of those episodes either. Star Fleet infiltrated and taken over by a few enemies, and no way to stop them. At least this episode they had multiple baddies and been at it for years. This is the beginning of what I disliked about later Star Trek, they decided to start a story, then ignore the ideas for several episodes and then bring it back. I found DSN, and voyager annoying, in that they would battle the enemy, get past them, then 5 episodes later Borg are back, or Dominion are back, with no change. I am hopeful for season 2 of Picard, but after watching the first episode, I skipped to just watching the "Ready Room" shows about the episodes, and I never liked Will Wheaton when he was on TNG, I still think it would have been better if he had been Q's son or something, and he had just been given to Beverly after Q accidentally cause the death of her husband, and their real child.
I agree. I like the premise of these types of 'alien bodysnatchers" horror type stuff but I felt the show really didn't execute it well. Even for a 1987 show I thought it was executed poorly.
Could have been one of the greatest episodes, but the acting, the fight scenes and the special effects make it worse than a bad Doctor Who episode. It's only worth watching for the hilarious awfulness, so an A for Hilariosity, an F for execution.
Terrible. Terrible episode. This one was never good...
Space bugs? really? The conspiracy is quickly over when the admiral tries to force Riker to eat the bugs.......
Also the stop motion bugs were really, really, really bad even for the late 80's...
The world is too new to be destroyed this early in the season.
Everything is wrong with this one, tone, timing and execution for TNG.
Everything’s about this whole episode was just dumb and silly and unconvincing. The special effects in particular were quite poorly done.
startrek online brought this story back
