I once heard Elvis Costello evaluate this album as his worst and even apologizing to his fans...!!! - This is so incredible to me because I was amazed immediately by it when it came out, and it is definitely one of my 10 classics pop albums I like the most and without any break for all these years. Stupid.
AND: It is one of the very few 80ies- platters where somebody did ya good job with electronic sound components and with the sound of the drums as well. Somebody agree??

Naturally, I loved it too and didn't have MTV. I had the promo poster and it took reading his superb autobio to realize he's like filmmaker Jean Renoir to his Impressionist painter Rene to see how they are connected. Elvis, this one we Love, is truly inspiring and the Real Deal! Facts.

He did a great interview with Chris Evans on TFI Friday, when the reissue ('congratulations, you just bought our worst LP!') had just come out. That was obviously intended to be the gag/hook-line for the interview. So Chris Evans puts various EC LPs on the table and asks 'what do you think of this one?' Every time Elvis says 'actually, that's a cracker...that's a *great* one...that one's fine...' until Chris Evans eventually breaks into laughter and says 'well, that's not how we rehearsed it, but it was still fun...'

I was blown away that Daryl Hall was in This Video. I didn't even think they knew each other. It was such a fun Video. Also Daryl in his own way has strong ties to England. As many of you know he wrote "Everytime You Go Away" in the early days of his Career and Paul Young was allowed to Record it. He also did House Flipping in England, and Maneater was used in a UK Documentary about Samantha "Sam" Mitchell on Eastenders. I would love for Daryl to have had Elvis or someone else perform with him on Live From Daryl's House.

I don't know how Daryl Hall found the time to do this late in 1983. Hall & Oates were the biggest act in the world in terms of #1 hits from 1980-1984 and they were constantly touring the world at this time. They did not outsell, Michael Jackson at this time but they wrote and produced more #1 singles in this specific time period than Michael and Prince.

    • @laminage

Exactly! Philly in my opinion had the Best Blue Eyed Soul Singers than any other State. Len Barry (123), Karen Young (Hot Shot). Even now The Music of Philly is just as popular in England where Boyband/Girlbands do "Covers" of obscure R & B Songs. When the UK Boyband Take That made their TV Debut on Top Of The Pops, England's Longest Running Music Show that Hall & Oates did in the 1970's. They were patterned after New Kids On The Block and their "Debut" Single was "It Only Takes A Minute" by The Tavares. Fortunately for the Writers like Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff a Couple of Gold Coins go into their pockets for songwriting royalties as well as others.

I've no doubt Daryl Hall was hugely successful and popular in 1983, but...they all turn up for Elvis. Burt Bacharach, Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Glenn Tillbrook, Billie Joe Armstrong, Lucinda Williams, Roy Orbison, Rosanne Cash, U2...how long have you got? Songwriters know quality when they see it in another songwriter.

Look at how Elvis Costello treats his date in the beginning of the video. Even as an 9 year old boy when I first saw this, I knew that Elvis was a ladies man. Elvis was an awesome role model growing up. The male music acts that are out today make me want to throw up. Elvis has been one of my musical heroes since getting into music at such a young age. Love Elvis. Was lucky to see him live nearly 20 years ago @ Bumbershoot in Seattle. Would love to go see him live again, and shake his hand.

It's weird how he comes off as like some sweet 80s hearthrob in this music video, like a Rick Astley with glasses, such a contrast to his earlier image as a edgy angry punk...imagine this is the first Elvis Costello song you heard and then going looking for his other music and finding This Years Model...it would be shocking. I really don't think this album is terrible, it's just way too busy. There's too much happening in each song which means that the songs themselves don't get the chance to shine.

As Elvis himself has admitted, it's a product of its time. There are some great songs in there, unfortunately everything is swamped in a particular style of production which was hugely popular at the time, but which has dated particularly badly. But there it is, you live and learn. Several of the songs on this LP have enjoyed an afterlife as radically reworked live versions.

@@peterowen9183Also see: “Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti” by Squeeze. Good songs but horribly dated (it came out in 1986) production.

MsLadybird99 too long ago for her tho. Daryl Hall walls in with a Princess Diana type.

Such a great song and such a crap sound quality. This needs to be remixed.

Whether or not the actress is of age, the fashion choice clearly screams little GIRL SCOUT. Meanwhile the other actresses are ALL dressed accordingly to a GROWN woman's fashion.
