This is the first time I've actually interviewed someone on this subject - And the fact it is with a poor, simple 98-year-old Jamaican man made this even more special, more authentic and, to be quite honest with you, a bit emotional for me.
He shared reflections on, among other things:
▶His migration from Kingston (Whitehall Avenue) to St. Elizabeth.
▶Life on the plantation (including food, meal, and punishment)
▶The 1938 sugar riot

98 years old & the man looks like he’s 70 years old. What a sweet man. I would sit down with him and listen to him all day. He reminds me of my grandfather. Strong, peaceful and peace loving. Beautiful!

I live in England and I did some volunteering at a old home in the summer and there were many old white people there his age who couldn’t walk, talk, shower cook or anything and were completely bed bound. They must eat really good food and drink good water in Jamaica.

I was fortunate to know my grandmother born 1900s, slavery was still alive. Jamaica's need to document their history before it's lost for ever.
He was not a slave. Slavery abolished in Jamaica 1834. Know the history.
My father was born in 1876 same year as Bustermantie. My gradfather was born in slavery

Point taken you are correct, however, slavery was abolished only in law, in practice it taken much longer to eradicate a system that oppressed.

This was such a pleasure to listen/watch. Mr Kenneth Brewster’s memory was so sharp; if he hadn’t said he was 98, I’d guess he was about 72. Wish I could’ve met him. Old people are treasures.

I would like to see our Jamaican-school system incorporate school-trips to visit our elders to learn our history first-hand.I am confident that everyone will learn something which will have lasting effects on the way we move forward in our own lives.

Just came across this footage and was moved to tears. I could sit at his foot for hours and listen. Hi strength of character, humbleness, memory and thankfulness. I just love our elders, true historian, so many lived a life so that ours could be different.
As a Jamaican living abroad, I am honored and privilege to hear the first-hand experience of my very own elder-Jamaicans. God bless him. He reminds me of my very own father, Sir Isaac Alexander Robinson of Grange Hill, Westmoreland who still runs his farm at the age of 84. Mr.Brewster's faith in God along with his wisdom for discernment has allowed to make wise choices under the most difficult of unimaginable circumstances.They also call my father, *Pappa-Son* God bless you continuously Mr. Brewster.

Juan Baez I experienced that 1951 storm. Those houses were Sticks and Mud. Wattle n Darb. Hurricane Charley move everything in the East. Saint Thomas. Saint Anne’s . Portions of Kingston and Saint Andrews. I think he is mixing up some things . No Slaves in the 1930’s Servants who live on premises. Have Sundays off. Some never had anywhere to really go so they would just stay on the properties.
Juan Baez . Corn full you up. Clean you out. Etc. I hope young people is listening. Bustamante built the first set of real houses for the people. And did what no politician every did. Board houses. Then concrete houses in Trench Town. From First Streets to Seven Street. Bordered by Central Road. That’s where Bob Marley came to live for a few years.
We youngJamaicans need to give thanks, My grandmother is a 105 years old she use to walk for hours to reach market we learn a lot from her she blessed to still be with us.

I really appreciate this interview. I was very fascinated with the information that in the 1920’s Jamaica 🇯🇲 was still experiencing the effects of slavery. I was sharing that fact with my Caribbean History student. The harsh reality of slavery and it’s cruel tentacles spanned so many generations long after so called Emancipation.

You are more than right he was maybe better off in slavery. Food for the poor in Jamaica should know about him to build him a house and they have Member of Parliament who tell you I am off the island I am in New York look how they kill each others in US and the police can kill them.
So there you have it folks, Slavery did not end in 1838 for Jamaica, it ended in 1938 with the Bustamante related strikes and riots...
Chattel slavery ended. Not mental slavery.

First off slavery ended in the 1830s. The Morant Rebellion took place in 1865 and was a protest started by Rev Paul Bogle because of poverty, high taxes, poor living conditions and high taxes. The problems were worsened by a flood..
My dad was born in 1914, 12 years before him, and had no experience with any slaves. Not even my grand parents who were born in the late 1800s had any slave experiebce.
His experience is when Jamaica was under British rule and people were fighting for better working conditions for people who worked in the cane fields.
This started the Trade Union movement which eventually fought for self rule and towards independence.
He seems to be a nice man and is doing very good for his age. May God continue to bless him.
This interview is so important to us. What a really pleasant elderly gentleman he is in sharing his experiences of growing up on that beautiful island. It's amazing how healthy he looks for age 94. He's not even sitting down. He remembers Hurricane May of 17th August 1951. My mother remembered that day too. At the moment, parts of Jamaica are in turmoil with poverty and violence. I hope that it changes to become a more gentler Jamaica; a Jamaica which was relayed to me by my parents. God bless this elderly gentleman, his family, and the gentleman holding the interview.

Cole was so humble talking about burning cold it was a blessing to many people in Springfield to be honest sometimes when our gas finish we could rely on him he ever hardly run out of cold he burn the best cole that you could ever ask for i use to fry chicken and sell I was one of his great customer

Mr. Gayle: Fabulous idea for you to record our elders receounting our history. More of this needs to be done for our record archives. Just a shame that you did not position the recorder closer to him...he is soft spoken and it is very difficult to hear his recount of events. Although you try to repeat his reponses, this tends to distract.But still...well done

I concur...Jamaican don't produce documentaries about their history and struggles. I envy Black Americans because they tell their story, the good-bad -and the ugly , through books and film.

What a dear old man .. growing up in England I have been lucky enough to know plenty of old (and young ) Jamaicans .. when my parents moved abroad it was a few old Jamaicans and bonafide Rastas that helped and guided me with my young family and my work and business etc I have to mention one man in particular from St Pauls Bristol Know to everyone as Bigger or Uncle Dick RIP I loved that man and he guided me well as he did so many others . I just had to share that and Mr Brewster is right love and unity is the only solution .

Of all the videos that you show this is the one that takes me away because I love history and this has blown me away to listen to this 98 year old man and how his memory is intact and god bless him and you the camera man and I hope you live a long life keep doing this .
I liked this interview with one of the living elder in Jamaica, learn a lot about Jamaica from a person who lived it. Awesome!
Wow brothers and sisters, what we have in Jamaica to day did not come easy, our fore parents did put their backs into this land, it hurts to see some who have enough don't try to reach out to our elders on a constant base. We are the survivors of the middle passage.
this interview reminds me of my grandmother when she was alive. She was a great story teller and i am glad i use to always worry her to tell me stories of the past even when others think i was been too bothersome to her. That was in the 80s to early 90s and i was just a preteen between 12 to 15 years, but even then i could see the significance of getting hold of such history. My grandmother was born in 1905 and she died in 1991 at age 86.she was the mother of my mom. up until her last few weeks, she was strong in will, had a powerful memory and a very robust voice. she however could not walk very well because of a stroke that took away her mobile skills in her left side a long time ago before i was born so i grow up knowing her walking with a stick. as she ages she also started to have poor eye sight because of glaucoma. to share her stories with us would always light her up with a warm feeling, but of all her 9 grandchildren (all brothers and sisters) i was the only one always asking to hear these stories but everyone would gather round to hear them. and to this day i am still the only one that keep them sacred. my dads mother is still alive, she will be 91 this year. she did raised me when i was a child and from her i learned the skills of life, but she was not the one to sit and have conversations with children. she was a skinny little strict christian woman who rules with the power of the whip and i learn to fear and love her at the same time. she now lives in New York and i also lives in New York but sadly when i go to visit her she doesn't speak much of the past and she gets tired easily when she talk too long, so not history from her to be had. but i learned a treasure trove of skills and life lessons growing up with her as a child between ages 6 to 12.
I always use to think why did Jamaica fight for independence for them to be killing each other put now I see why we have a long a history of being abused we thank God for is life God kept him alive for a reason

I enjoyed watching this video and learned alot. As I learn more and more I wish I had the power just to slaughter all who did wrong to Afro Jamaica. Imagine wearing a shirt made out of flour bag and what he said were short pants made out of a flour bag.
I liked how he talked about making music with a shaker. That sounded very African, and how in his days they would take bamboo and shake it. That too sounds very African.
Just to share, I tried speaking with one of my grand relatives, I asked him what it was like when he was a boy and a tear came to his eye. I stopped, and from that point never learned more about the times for him growing up. I am glad that I have a picture of him and that moment of the tear will always stick with me. The experience and truth of the horrors of being a slave his version will come to me some day.
It's such a shame that the family that I come from, and I am Black, and of Jamaican parentage, all they can talk about is this Jesus Christ bullchit. They have no interest learning about the African in them and instead of fighting with them I left them all in their ignorance and started the journey on my own to learn more about the African in my ancestry also in Afro Jamaica. It's a shame how religion messed up alot of Jamaicans.

The elder telling the story of his life remind me of growing up in Dominica, remind me of my mother's uncle living in a thatch roof house telling the similar story the flour bag clothes and all bring back memories thank for the history lesson man great similarities.
His family land is still in Whitehall Avenue still,his brother was my dad friend,but his brother died,yes from him say his name Whitehall come into spirit, like I know him.
