  • Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area located in Randall County, Texas, United States. The refuge was established in 1937 as a breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife, and it covers an area of approximately 7,664 acres. The refuge is named after Buffalo Lake, which is a shallow playa lake that is an important stopover for migratory birds.
    The primary purpose of the refuge is to provide habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, and other migratory birds, as well as for resident wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, coyotes, and bobcats. The refuge is also home to a variety of plant species, including mesquite, prickly pear cactus, and native grasses.
    Visitors to Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge can enjoy a variety of activities, including birdwatching, hiking, wildlife photography, and hunting. Hunting is allowed on the refuge in accordance with state and federal regulations, and the most commonly hunted species are white-tailed deer, feral hogs, and waterfowl.
    The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and it is part of the larger Texas Mid-coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
