- Autonomous, ocean-going vessels have been launched from Alaska for oceanic research in the Bering Sea. NOAA has partnered with Saildrone, Inc. to monitor the vital signs of the sea-wind, temperature and salinity, to take a look at important Walleye pollock fish stocks, track Northern fur seals and locate right whales through sound.

These are used in hurricanes too, very cool technology that will no doubt make countless scientific discoveries!
Very interesting.
Could larger versions of these saildrones be used for shipping cargo?
My brain hurts after having a school assignment over this very subject.
As Andy mentions below, these seem good proof-of-concept vehicles for cargo and probably many other applications. As data gatherers however, what data can these drones gather that isn't already available via satellite?
Unlike satellites, saildrones can gather acoustic data.
How does a fur seal react to being followed around by one of these machines for weeks?
"Dear diary, its been fifteen days and the strange surface thing is still following me. What does it want? What is its purpose?"
The same way they react to a sailboat. "Wtf is that? Oh, look, a fish."
Interesting technology. However at 2:24 there is a worker climbing around in fish that are still alive. That is cruel to the fish and should not be permitted.
That was actually a commercial ship and not a research vessel. Research vessels catch much smaller amounts of fish to collect data, and then returned to the ocean. The fish that worker was wading through were soon after processed and frozen to be shipped to seafood markets world wide.
Hi Carl, I understand that those fish are eventually processed however isn't there a way to catch them and process them in a kinder way? Perhaps I am naive? Anyway, I hope that there are kinder ways. Cheers.
they dump them onto a conveyor belt and slice them up using cutting machines which then quick freeze them for the market. yes you are naive. compared to the machine which slices them apart and spits them out in pieces the rest of the treatment and rough handling is rather humane. dont like it ? go vegan and dont look back.
