Hi Dave, as a crotchety old man, I have little patience for players who won't even try to put their Epiphone Les Paul together. Its not s frickin' stradavarius! Your videos taught me how to set up and repair most electric guitar issues. Make them do it themselves!!!!! Teach a man to fish!!!!! thanks for another great vid.
dxm2dxm2 totally agree. it would take me a lot to take my guitar to someone to fix, and that includes my Epiphone, ibanez's and Gibson! it's so easy to do it yourself, and satisfying.
She looks and sounds awesome. Did the whole thing back in 1982 on my first Les Paul, which was a second hand Maya copy. All new electronics and hardware. My first experience working on guitars. Almost 40 years later, that guitar is still alive, with all those same parts!
Dave, I envy your wiring skills, and finishing, and more. Since watching these vids and talking to friends about them, they’re giving me small electronics jobs. I wouldn’t tackle them without having these online lessons for reference. Those Epiphones just beg to be hot rodded. Thanks for the tutoring!
Yeah they do make a great platform to hot rod huh. I mean why not? They are typically good quality and use good materials to make them. I would bet you can get an epiphone to sound like a Gibson if you install Gibson pickups and pots, and if you do some work on the neck you could even get them to feel like one too. I’ve hot rodded a Harley Benton te 52 and it sounds like an American tele now. I refinished the neck and did a little fretwork and it’s the nicest feeling neck I’ve ever felt. So maybe I’ll hot rod my old epiphone that is in mint condition because I don’t really play it lol.
I love these videos, thanks for all the effort you put in to them Dave, they've taught me a lot.

I have read a very large part of the sustain of a LP style guitar is in the tuner/bushing fit in the headstock, tighter the better. Here I see and Dave says,"sloppy" When I replaced the stock tuners in my Epi with Schallers, the headstock had to be opened up a few mm.Even then, the bushings were nice and tight. That guitar has tremendous sustain with Xl's 10's ,it is so nice to play.(BTW Epi Korea 90) Who needs a stompbox?
Hey Dave Nice to see ya Busy working away ,,,I just picked up a 60th anniversary Fender Strat USA made rosewood 22 frets my best friend has the matching tele with the maple neck ,,,I gotta get ya to do my Ibanez ,,,,and I also have a 1962- 63 Kay red devil guitar I would love for you to get your hands on needs a bit of work Kudos ,,,I haven't been on much but I try to watch ya as much as I can ,,,,,Cheers
I love Epiphone LP's especially upgraded. I got 4 myself. Excellent instruments. Love the Honey burst on it. I would have gone with Schaller tuners myself and i hope he popped in some pearly gates Duncans in there. BTW if you want gold hardware why not order gold coloured pick ups? They cost the exact same price.
I saw a 9000 thousand dollar Les Paul in the summer 2017 Sweetwater catalog. Gibson can bite me. Its the principal too. If the guy thinks the Epi feels good then he did the right thing. Outside of the player, its mostly in the pickups
Steven Edwards finally! Someone who gets it! If this guitar feels right, why not make it perfect? The best instrument I own is a Squier that I modified like crazy.
100% right i did the same on my schecter omen 6 guitar (reshaped the body - now is thinner, repainted body, new pickups) and the result is great for me.
I have an Epiphone lp custom pro and I love it, it's an absolutely brilliant guitar and the sound is amazing! Maybe one day, if the guitar starts to fail i'll upgrade to some EMG 81/85 pickups, but for now it's just pefect!
Gibson Faded Series cost 799/899 Les Pauls and SGS have been amazing & amazing quality. The standards...not so much. Epiphone is catching up. After your touch, upgrades, she will play great! Dave you are a saint, been watching for years! Still love the "pretend-o-caster" video! DAVE 4 PRESIDENT!
I like Seymour Duncan Pickups, however, I always order Phillips head screws for another supplier and ditch the SD screws. I have asked SD tech support, they state the straight head screws are for a"Vintage" look.
AHHH, the smell of solder fumes in the AM ! Tks for all the tips as I got my Fender 50's Strat put together and working A-OK ! First time doing this and getting nut filed was a bit of a "nail biter" but got it accomplished...truss rod was fine a didn't have to do anything as rod adjustment is in the heel !
Hi Dave, I got a great price on a high end cort Tele, changed the pickups and saddles and had a great guitar. Sounds better than a USA fender I had. Do agree it can be a waste of money at times but I got lucky with the one I upgraded. Thanks for the video
I don't have a problem with somebody putting better pickups and hardware in a guitar, if they like the guitar and it plays well, he could just as well buy a Gibson and hate it after the one he had is long gone.
exactly, a 300$ epiphone that plays nice can be decked out over time. Not everyone has 3k to drop on a guitar, but most people can swing a few hundred here and there. And really when it comes to the SG, I actually prefer the feel of the Epiphone over the actual Gibson, slap some better pickups in there and bob's your uncle
I've got an Epi Lester as well, a Standard PlusTop Pro. Has the Probucker pickups which are pretty decent actually, fat mids and plenty of bite in them. The fretwork stinks and it needs some help with that. A tech did the nut slots but it's still the stock plastic unit. The tuners aren't locking but they're solid, Grovers I think. I hope to splurge like you did with all the trem parts and top-quality pickups. Inspirational!
Mike 369 I’ve gone both ways - replaced the tuners, nut, bridge saddles, pickups and electronics on my PRS SE Mark Tremonti, but also picked up a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom for a steal of a price. Even though both are singlecuts, the LP does its thing in different ways than the PRS and will hold far more of its value given time.
This is one video that I really found myself disliking. It was just the sneering attitude as if he was being asked to do something which was beneath his dignity. And that made me curious to know if Dave's objection is an economic one or an ethical one? Does he simply think that upgrading less expensive guitars is a waste of money? Or does he believe that putting into an economical guitar body components which belong in an expensive model of guitar is somehow dishonest or unethical?
Why not save money on both options and buy a epiphone from Japan with the original Gibson headstock shape those guitars are on ebay I wouldn’t buy one of these epiphones
@@robertanderson6929 Have to agree, seems bit unprofessional, especially the last phrase in the video. Well opinion is fine and maybe true to some extent, but to say it in the video and mock the customer.

When I started my second apprenticeship, my old Italian boss would full out lose his shit if I accidentally dropped a flathead screw anywhere that he might find it. Nice work on those electronics, Dave.
Apparently you haven't done the intonation on Les Paul guitars before I'm assuming that Epiphone Les Pauls are the same as Gibsons . I'm looking at my '56 Goldtop and just like all the others I've had [4] to get the correct intonation the 2 bottom saddles i.e. E & A have to face away from the pups while the other 4 face the other way. Also your guess that the screws holding the saddles in place have to face towards the pups for easy access is 100% correct.
I noticed you wired the switch wrong. Front facing single lug is ground. Left rear and Right rear are pickup lead inputs from the pot outputs. The center rear combined leaf is the output to the output jack.
I bought a Switchcraft toggle a while back with the same problem. The first time I tried to flip it one of the contacts stuck to the toggle and bent... game over.
From an aesthetics standpoint, the owner really screwed the pooch on his choices. Gold hardware, nickel pickup covers and black rings, Yikes, To each his own I guess,
My first Les Paul was an Epiphone (which I still own and play), I have since bought two Gibson Les Pauls (an older one and a new one). Having played a decent selection of friends Epiphones/Gibsons over the years i've found that there are good and not so good guitars with either logo. In my opinion the stock humbucking pickups in Epiphones are more than good enough to get classic rock and roll tones from providing you have a decent amplifier. Replacement pickups are only worth it (again in my opinion) if you're seeking a tone that the current pickups wont give you (ie switching from humbuckers to P90's).
Dave ....I enjoyed this one. I have Been a watcher for many years. Yes sir ah Ree! Whatever the customer wants, then can not supply. Maybe mini vise grips on the vol and tone knobs may be in mind. If we were all the same our wives would be clones.
Dave can you show videos of pickup high from the neck and bridge clean sound in both pickup and showing us by MM aka millimeters ruler by showing it in the video treble/ bass side on both pickup to get clean sound
THANK YOU FOR PLAYING ,,, DON'T BE WORRIED ABOUT YOU PLAYING IT'S JUST A WONDERFUL FLAVOR TO HEAR THE SOUND OF AND THE EFFECTS OF THE WONDERFUL JOB YOU DO WITH THE TENDER LOVING CARE ,, I MEAN WOW DAVE,,, THAT LES PAUL REALLY GOT AN UPGRADE WITH NEW FRESH EXPENSIVE PARTS,,, AND DON'T FORGET THE LES PAUL STILL HELD IT NAME AFTER ALL FOR I THINK I HAD REAL GOOD SOUND AND ONLY FOR THE FACT YOU WORKED ON IT,,, SO IT GOES TO SHOW YOU BITTING EXPENSIVE PARTS,,, IS MUCH BETTER THEN BITTING THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS,,, ,,,IN THE LONG RUN,, FOR YOUR SO TALENTED THAT YOU CAN MAKE A GUITAR SOUND LIKE A THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS ..SO YOUR GUITAR PLAYING IS ESSENTIAL !! AT THE END OF THE SEGMENT IF YOU DON'T MIND ME SAYING SO! THANK YOU!
My first guitar was a 96 epiphone LP. It was an early Czech build, with a long neck tenon and other different things... I have kept it for nearly 10 years and sunk a lot of money into new parts and servicing. Why? I have other guitars that cost a lot more and that I love, but this is a 'good' guitar. It's solid, well made, the neck never needs adjusting, the neck is instantly comfortable, it sounds excellent and sustains well etc. With new pots and Lace pickups it sings. I will invest in a full refret for it at some stage too so I can have larger frets that I enjoy on other guitars. Also, because it's already beat up, I can take it places and if it gets knocked over (has happened before and nothing broke) I don't care as much. If it gets dinged it doesn't matter. I aim to keep it going as an almost daily player for as long as my hands work.
Is there any need to use flux if you use solder with the lube-y stuff already in it? Sorry, I can't find the correct English word, but it's called "resin core" in Dutch.
Theres two types of LP bridges: Nashville and ABR, and there IS a rule o witch direction they go, ABR screws point the pickups and Nashville style points the tailpiece. The grooves on them are not the same from the first string to the 6 string. Ive heard you say it dosent matter witch way the bridge goes in several videos but it definetly does...
I can see this would be worth it if you got the epi used and cheap. But with all the bits on top of a newish epi price you would be near the Gibson 60's traditional models surely (the ones with the P90's)??
I guess that the customer have his reasons , I also had a epiphone les paul once complete upgraded where even the name gibson on the headstock was removed...I liked that guitar.
Dave, thanks for taking one for the team and inhaling those vapors. Your sacrifice was in vain though, since your left hand was in the way (13:32-13:39).
if the guitar is good it doesn't matter what the headstock says. said that, i own 3 gibsons and one korean epiphone (i've own more over the years). i have the epiphone upgraded to the point that it can "compete" with the gibsons, but is it worth it? no. why? because even if it plays great and sounds amazing i find myself reaching for the gibsons every time. you better do as dave said. wait and get that guitar you've always wanted. then you'll know why.
So Dave, the question here is, what if the guitar they really want is an Epiphone? With the upgraded parts it’s going to still be an Epiphone with better parts and it’ll leave a few coins jingling in their pocket for a great amp and some other bells and whistles. I would rather leave all those pretty $5,000 Gibson’s on the wall and move on over to the section of the store I can afford. That way I can get a nice looking instrument with some quality parts which I’ll really enjoy.
If you intend hanging on to a favourite guitar, I don't think that there is any harm in upgrading it. If you do sell it on, though, you will never recoup the difference. But if you keep hold of the original parts, then you can put them back and keep the upgrade bits for another project, or sell 'em on. Some copies now are superb instruments compared to a lot of the crap that was sold years ago. They usually keep their price point low by economising on parts that can be readily upgraded. Even Gibsons, at three, four or more times the cost of a copy, can be very variable in build quality. You can still get Friday afternoon instruments - Plek or no Plek. I have three Gibson LP Standards of various ages. The oldest one never comes out of the case. I've never bonded with it. However, I have a pimped LP copy and I love it. It sings and fits me like a glove. There are no rules with these things.
Hey Dave, How do I send you my Strat. from America? Needs a complete setup! Any recommendations on a service or carrier? Thanks Dave I look forward to your response..
Dave mention's a ground wire going to a post for the bridge. Sounds important, no? So, we would expect that if he had removed those posts we would have seen a ground wire somwhere in that hole, no? Cause...I just put new posts in my custom build, and never saw any wire down at the bottom....
why does the neck warp when you leave the strings off/how is their still tension on the neck ? Apologize for my lack of knowledge on this. Wasn't sure if the truss rod is the issue
Ron Padgett Looks a tad silly when they mix 'em up like that - to me anyway. If you had no choice I'd agree with you but if you've got the option I say go with one or the other. I prefer the gold, some people like nickel, but gold tuners, TOM, stop bar and and NICKEL pup covers ??
I went to a local tech to get some used pickups I got on ebay installed in my epi 335 and the first thing he did was test the pickups. He had a small amp right at the counter and a guitar cable with one end that had alligator clips on it. He clipped it to the pickup wires and had a jig with strings on it he strummed the strings tested the pickups. One worked the other didn't. He said he has had to many customers think he messed up the pickups that he tests them right in front of them before even accepting the job. I took a video of that with my camera and the guy that sold them gave me a refund. He was protecting himself but it helped me out too.
That's a nice video showing a lot of different work. But I do agree with many that i would have just bought a better guitar. But I see why he chose that one, the top does have a great flame to it and the pickups do sound good; but again I would have gone a different route.
Yeah, I bought discounted Trads 7 years ago, Gibson was almost worth it back then, but now Epiphone has some good stuff as do other makes, you have lots more choice for the dollar. Bottom line is pre-owned works best for the $$$$,it's all about knowing what you want...
Nashville bridges screws go to the bout of the guitar ABR1 Bridge screw go towards the front.Sure you can do whaever you want but you can drive a Pink Prius you wont see me doing it.
call me a cretin but I have an Epiphone LP Standard, I dropped a p90 into the neck position, a paf clone I had flying around in the bridge, new pots and orange drops in there, slapped an old Bigsby B7 on it and I gotta admit.. I like it better than my 91 Gibson LP Standard.
I did this very same thing to an Epiphone Firebird I purchased ( I went with one of those kits via Faber ) It all fit perfectly and the hardware was definitely far superior in comparison to the stuff Epi uses to keep costs down.... I'll be perfectly honest though here, the 'Tone' was certainly not that much of a change though for the moneys I burnt lol! The one thing that really made a considerably substantial difference was the 3-way switch though... the OEM switch just feels like trash heh. Would I do it again? No, I'd probably just solder in a new 3-way and call it good. PS ~ The flathead screws they use on the pickups are indeed a freaken joke lol..... I guess it's an effort to make it seem 'vintage' for the cork sniffers.
You should use an aluminum alligator clip to better dissipate heat. Assuming it's having Amber or gold knobs, the switch poker chip should be the black one with gold lettering and the black or Amber switch tip. Or get rid of the ugly (imo) black pickup rings.
Dave's such a positive guy. "Just let me start off..." He cracks me up. It's half the reason I watch his channel. Good for a laugh.

Good advice! Been there done that! Just save for that great guitar! A cheap body will remain a cheap body with high priced parts!
@@GuitarBassCigar and you won't have to worry about digging the damn thing, 1k+ you cringe everytime you bump it
Good job, Dave.
You're welcome.
Oh no! A RED ground wire?!? My head just exploded.
Dave, thanks for taking one for the team and inhaling those vapors. Your sacrifice was in vain though, since your left hand was in the way (13:32-13:39).
Hello there, did you see any maple cap inside the pickup cavity? or is it just a thin veneer?
i didn't read all the comments, but... gold bridge and stop tail w/ chrome fatcats? are they single coil? thnx for all the videos!
yes they are single coil, like a P90 but in a humbucker size......they sound nice in the neck position, a little to trebly in the bridge for me
if the guitar is good it doesn't matter what the headstock says. said that, i own 3 gibsons and one korean epiphone (i've own more over the years). i have the epiphone upgraded to the point that it can "compete" with the gibsons, but is it worth it? no. why? because even if it plays great and sounds amazing i find myself reaching for the gibsons every time. you better do as dave said. wait and get that guitar you've always wanted. then you'll know why.
I have an epi lp standard, I couldnt afford a gibson, how could I upgrade it?
Could you do a video on how to install a bridge ground on a guitar like this?
So Dave, the question here is, what if the guitar they really want is an Epiphone? With the upgraded parts it’s going to still be an Epiphone with better parts and it’ll leave a few coins jingling in their pocket for a great amp and some other bells and whistles. I would rather leave all those pretty $5,000 Gibson’s on the wall and move on over to the section of the store I can afford. That way I can get a nice looking instrument with some quality parts which I’ll really enjoy.
Looks just like my Korean made TOKAI Love Rock! Probably came off the same production line when it was scheduled for Tokai Guitar (1 - 4pm?)
Great video dude!
yeah ,!Why a gold theme guitar with nipple pup covers?
Wasn't sure if the truss rod is the issue
makes sense, thanks
its designed to have strings on it to give apposing force.
I liked the guitar. Make it unique and play good and to me that is a good guitar. Great vidio dave
WHY _black_ pickup rings...???
Why's that dude putting bold hardware on it when the pickup covers are nickel?
Does everything have to match? lol
You mean bickel?
Oh for fucks sake.
Ron Padgett yes
That'll be a fine guitar...good job
I'm amazed at how floppy the headstock was when he was install the new tuners
I would have went gold pickup covers and cream rings.
Why gold hardware and chrome pickups? Should've just changed pickups.
That's a nice video showing a lot of different work. But I do agree with many that i would have just bought a better guitar. But I see why he chose that one, the top does have a great flame to it and the pickups do sound good; but again I would have gone a different route.
I totally understand that. Can anyone say that have nt acted questioably due to emotion or sentiment? I'm certainly in that club.
Yeah, I bought discounted Trads 7 years ago, Gibson was almost worth it back then, but now Epiphone has some good stuff as do other makes, you have lots more choice for the dollar. Bottom line is pre-owned works best for the $$$$,it's all about knowing what you want...
29:50 I'm so nervous about the head stock, but I trust you Dave!
David - you look so young. 🎸
29:30...I hear Montrose "Make it Last"
Yamaha NS-10 monitors huh? Kudos Dave.
Silver pickups? But why?
It does look a bit jarring, doesn't it...
becuase they are phat cats, and you can't get gold covers for them. they are similar to p90's
I see. So it all makes perfect sense...
NOT!!
crabtrap You could replace the covers if you really wanted to. Depending on the chrome covers it could be more trouble than its worth though.
you can get gold phat cats
You should use an aluminum alligator clip to better dissipate heat. Assuming it's having Amber or gold knobs, the switch poker chip should be the black one with gold lettering and the black or Amber switch tip. Or get rid of the ugly (imo) black pickup rings.
Did the customer want black pickup surrounds? Doesn't look right.
