  • This footage is from the master tape entitled "Wildwood Boardwalk 1986" and provides an inside look at the Jungleland Dark Ride on Hunt's Pier in Wildwood New Jersey. Jungleland was demolished in 1989, but thanks to Mel Taylor aka John Jurgaitis who shot this amazing video we can experience Jungleland once again. Contributed to Funchase by MelTaylorMedia.com.

they should have a retro Pier with older rides for us nostalgic people

Moreys is too cheap and money hungry they would not want to do that. They won't want to buy retro rides and have to pay for the upkeep of them.

@@Brandon_the_inflatable_expert Morey bought hunts Pier on purpose just to close it down! He had been trying to buy it since the mid 70's because it was his competition, he made an excuse that the rides were to old to restore! Like the golden nugget ride and had a big last ceremony of the nugget to make him look like he cared.......

ReviewCentral1000 I love it! I remember all of those rides. Wildwood is shit now compared to back in the day.

You had more creativity back then. Now it’s mostly off the shelf rides and the only custom built attraction is the ghost ship. Also Jack and Will Morey don’t have the same passion like their father and uncle did. I miss Hunt’s Pier and Castle Dracula most of all. I rode Jungleland in 1982 and 1983.

My dad passed Mar. 8, 1986 hit by car. We stopped going to Wildwood until we finally went back Aug 1995 and Hunt's Pier was mostly shut. In 1996-1998 it was Dinosaur Beach and the Golden Nugget Mine ran again. It was my first time riding Golden Nugget since 1983. I'm from Allentown, PA north of Philly we have Dorney Park I've been going there since 1976 have many fond memories when it was owned by late Bob Ott until May 1985 (passed Mar. 4, 2007).

@rwk360 We vacationed every summer in Wildwood back in the 1970s. I loved the Whacky Shack! Always rode it every summer. I remember the first room that the car went into right after the load area had a small window that had reddish-pink colored glass/plastic in it which, during the day, gave the room a reddish tint. I vaguely recall this room having drawings of creepy family portraits on the wall, etc. Then the car would go through the first "bang doors" and into the dark.

I wish an on ride video of the Whacky Shack would surface. I didn't ride it for some reason, I was there between 1980 and 1983. I did ride Iron Horse Ghost Town RR, Jungleland, Keystone Kops, Golden Nugget, and Pirate Ship Skua. Whoever rode the Whacky Shack, what do you remember from the inside? There are a few photos of the interior on sites. There was a cuckoo clock, knit wit, sawmill, etc. there are color pics of those on laffinthedark at the dark rides of hunt's pier page by Anthony Canzano

Oh, btw I'm glad our dad took me and my brother to Wildwood between 1980-1983 and we went to almost every pier, Fun Pier, Hunt's Pier, Sportland, etc. I rode Lost World and walked through Crazy House on Fun Pier but missed Castle Frankenstein. The only dark ride I missed on Hunt's was Whacky Shack. Too bad it was razed after 1995 my first time back to WW. I missed Castle Dracula 80-83 but went through it Aug 95, June 96, June 98. It burned Jan 16, 2002. What a shame.

80s was most of my Wildwood years and I agree it was the best time. It's where I learned that I needed to live near a beach forever.

We often went down to Wildwood on a Saturday or Sunday after Labor day to use up the halve price tickets that Morey's sold on Easter weekend. Me & the kids were the last ones to ride the jungle boat one season. It was a the last day that Hunt's pier was open and the ride broke down and one if the workers had to push us thru the water. Hunts was the best pier in the early 1960's. We went on the pirate ship so many times that the older gentleman collecting tickets let us go on for free the last walk thru that day.

The Jungleland was removed early 1989 along with the Flyer coaster, train ride, mini hot rods (kiddie car ride on track) and the Pirate Ship Skua. After Bud Hunt sold Feb 1986 to investors the pier was doomed. The new owners didn't give a rats rear about preservation, they just wanted to make money and build newer rides like the Kamikaze coaster. With the failure of Dinosaur Beach Sept 1998, the pier became a go kart pier and storage/maintenance for the Morey's and Sightseer Tram Cars.

Boo933 please tell me what the Haunted House was like inside! I was there between 1980-1983 and saw it at night but didn't go in, I rode Dante's instead. I was between 6-9 years old. The Haunted House looked creepy at night.

rwk360. The haunted house was awesome! The 3rd floor was made up like a cave. My cousin and I would hid there for hrs and scare the girls when they came thru. We were 12yrs old! Great times

Great vid! I totally remember going on this as a kid. It was a pretty nice ride, however, those animatronic "native" characters were a tad bit racist by today's standards.

Yeah, if it weren't for the entire pier shutting down, it would have been "politically corrected" out of existence.

The Falcon appeared in a couple of places like Hersheypark. It was like a Merry-Mixer 50' in the air. I haven't seen it since the 2000's.
