The beginning was mostly improv with scales. Just saw an interview with him and the inner guitar teacher in him came out. He said if you want to make bitchin riffs then learn your guitar scales.
Its apparently a compliment/counterpart to the original Eruption solo, hes hitting queues and phrases that match it bar for bar but yes its mostly playing around with the modes of other scales so that it has a very similar style and theme to the original which is pretty cool
I’m really loving his Charvel’s. So much better than the Kramer’s in my opinion. I’ve never been a fan of active pickups, but those Fishman Fluence sound AWESOME! They kick the snot out of EMG’s.
fishman claims they’re not active... THEN WHY DO THEY NEED A BATTERY?! either way they do sound bitchin’. i played his guitar in sam ash once, then a hetfield guitar, and i could totally hear the difference in tone as far as distortion. i prefer the fishmans
they sound closer to passive, but still hear thst active sizzle tough up close. to me nothing beats a good passive but fishmans come close. he's got the classics probably. he used to play seymour duncan jb's if i'm correct.
EMGs sound pedestrian I have installed them in lots-o-gitars and was not impressed when I went to see the guys' bands live; they were super stoked and thought they would change their worlds. I know nothing about the Fishman other than Satchel's tone;it is killer at times

After seeing VH on the last tour in 2015 I think it was....and how bad DLR sang......VH would have been better served getting Ralph to sing and touring with him.
