The music reflects that! "Aftermath" and "Buttons" can go up against anything the Beatles ever did! The Stones themselves released an album they called "Sucking in the Seventies". The story presented here leaves some important trivia out. If it weren't for Brian Jones and Ian Stewart there would be no Rolling Stones. They were the founding members that placed ads in newspapers for guitarists and singer. And essentially, it was Brian's band. New management in the shape of Andrew Loog Oldham didn't like Ian Stewarts appearance, and banished him to behind-the-scenes-roles and supporting studio musician positions. And Oldham loved Mick and pushed him to the forefront of the band, with Jones just kind of a background player, though he was way more talented than Mick and Keith. I can only guess, but the deep shock of being ousted from his own band was just the last straw leading to his death. Likewise, Ian Stewart stayed in the shadows but remained gainfully employed as a band member till his death.

Keith says Brian Jones couldn't write songs? What a crock. Brian finished many otherwise sketchy J-R tunes by adding melodic counterpoint, hooks, riffs, and coloration. The marimbas on "Under My Thumb" is the song's dominant melody over and above Mick;s vocal. Aside from Brian's hypnotic guitar riff on "The Last Time", most of the song lyrics included was lifted from an earlier Staples Singer recording. Brian single-handedly wrote, arranged, and produced the soundtrack for the 1967 film "A Degree of Murder", matching the music to the film scenes. Could Keith have pulled off something like that? And as a songwriter, what would he have come up with on his own without Mick as the primary lyricist? According to Marianne Faithful, who was in the studio at the time, "Ruby Tuesday" was a collaboration between Brian and Keith, Mick was not around at the time, yet it shows up as "Jagger-Richard" on the LP. Most of the early Stones originals were credited to Nanker Phelge, a pseudonym for the group as a whole. When Nanker Phelge no longer showed up after 1965, had the others suddenly lost their creativity, with Mick and Keith picking up the slack? Evidence suggests that manager Andrew Oldham wanted to pitch Jagger-Richards as the Stones' absolute answer to Lennon-McCartney. No other collaboration from group members would be carried forward to songwriting credits, whether it had occurred or not. There's no telling what Brian might have been able to accomplish creatively with a musical collaborator(s) unfettered ny band management and politics. We'll never know, since he passed before he had a chance to do so.

Bill and Charlie stood idly by and did nothing as per usual. This is what I think Charlie means on here when he expresses guilt for "...what we did to him...".

@@MrThedonhead You mean they took all the credit. They DID NOT write all of the songs. The line up was always the same except the only change was always guitar players - and with every guitar player their sound changed. Their music got worse and worse as their guitar players got worse and worse. That's how you can tell the huge musical contribution and influence of each guitar player. Also, the variety of instruments found in their music went from several down to your basic 3 because, well, the rest of the stones are basic bitches when it comes to playing multiple instruments unlike true musicians who typically can play a few.
Mick Taylor was young, way more sober, and not emotionally attached to the Stones because he didnt invent them and put in the work to get them started. So he was smart and got out quick when they stole his musical credit.
Ronnie Wood isnt even worth mentioning, neither is anyone else I missed.
Mick and Keith definitely wrote alot of the music and definitely deserve credit. But you can tell they had plotted against him from the beginning. But they were only cutthroat enough to steal the band from Jones when he was deteriorating. They were NEVER cutthroat enough to get their own band started, named, and gigs booked. The Stones without Jones or Mick Taylor have wrote no songs worth mentioning. All their live shows for the last 40 years have been playing their greatest hits which is what includes Jones and Taylor helped make. If the Stones never got any new guitarists and had only stuck with Kieth, their career would have died quicker than Jones after being fired.
I literally wont listen to or watch any Stones performance without Taylor or Jones. It's hard to watch junkie thieves dance around in their 70s playing other people's music from when they were young or alive.

Sure Brian's musical talent happens on these as well as making Aftermath shine. But is it Brian who's holding them back or is it a general lack of inspired song writing and production ? Andrew Long Oldham weren't much of a producer (BTB) nor Jagger/Richard (SMR). On the other hand Jimmy Miller's production with players like Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keyes shifts the Stones Lp's way forward. @philipjones7372 Год назад

Willard, I think both sides were holding each other back.
Brian was more into World Music and 'Down home Rock' like Creedence Clearwater Revival' rather than Stones' riff based Hard Rock. Beggars Banquet features little input by Brian. Jagger and Richard were starting to ride an upward wave in their song writing and the Stones were becoming that Rock guitar driven riff band we know. Their previous song writing was very disimilar in general. The 1968 + songs and the Stones themselves could do with a virtuoso guitar player to sound better. Brian's not interested/capable of playing that role or being in the band much after Beggars Banquet. Keith, it should be noted CAN'T play much of that role either to fit these new type of songs.
Interestingly enough, after Mick Taylor (gifted Lead guitarist) leaves, he's replaced by Ronnie (one of their original choices in '69) but who is not a virtuoso but more of a guitar slinging Face but fits the part.

Seriously Mick and Keith treated Brian like shit, when it was this gorgeous , talented man who invited them into his band and got the gigs for them. He had a lot of talent, with people as diverse as Ginger Baker and Dr. John (two guys not noted for handing out compliments easily) English pop star Donovan, members of the Beatles, etc. all saying he was a good musician. He was never a virtuoso like a Hendrix or a Clapton, just a very good player for the time (which was a few years before both Jimi and Eric became well known.) He DID put the band together and was considered the leader in their early days according to Bill Wyman, recording engineer Glyn Johns (who didn't even LIKE him) Georgio Gomelsky, the guy who was attempting to help the band before Andrew Oldham and Eric Easton came on the scene, and despite what Keith now says. It was Jones who signed the first management contract with Oldham and Easton, not Jagger or Richards and it wasn't merely because he was a bit older; it was because he was seen as the leader at that time by most accounts. But he dug himself too deep a hole to get out of with all of the unwanted kids and their mothers that he didn't take care of, plus the drink and drugs. IMO opinion Ian Stewart said it best when he said something to the effect that Brian could have been a very superior person, but instead chose to be as stupid as possible. Sad story, both for Jones and for the many people he hurt and let down.

Brian was not capable, it seems, of moderation. He had no such filter or control. Everything Brian did was to excess.
Think of it. Brian had it made in the shade. All he had to do was to play easy rhythm guitar for Keith's fantastic hit songs. Show up on time and keep his nose clean and he would have a future as a famous and wealthy popstar for decades to come, living the life of a famous multi millionaire.

Brian's ability to play multiple instruments was what made the Stones sound in the mid 60s, experimenting with psychedelics and instruments. Just listen to tracks like 2000 Light Years from Home and Brian Jones playing the moog synth on that track is what made it whole. Keith's guitar riff was awesome but they needed Brian for all those other instruments. Imagine Under My Thumb without the marimba. It's impossible even though they did it live in the 70s without the marimba. Lady Jane with Brian on dulcimer. The list goes on. It sucks he died, in my opinion murdered. But, the Stones Golden Age came right after with the brilliant Mick Taylor on lead guitar. With all due respect to Brian, he was an incredible musician playing any instrument handed to him, he was a jack of all instruments but a master of none. Taylor was a master of guitar. His soul remained with the band. R.I.P Brian Jones and I hope you and recently deceased Charlie Watts are together, forever remaining in The Greatest Rock & Roll band the World will ever know.

"childhood friend Keith Richards". How in the fuck could they have been childhood friends when Brian grew up in a middle-class family in Cheltenham while Richards was a lower class, scruffy kid from Dartford. The second Rolling Stone was Ian Stewart whom Brian had worked with before and when one views pics of him from the early 60's, one sees he wasn't a bad looking cat at all. Yes, he did possess a prominent chin and did not wear his hair long but he was an excellent keyboardist, an integral part of a genuine R&B sound. Brian hired Richards but he certainly did not want two Dartford cunts in his group. Brian had worked with vocalist and harp player Paul Pond. At that time Pond considered R&B a hobby and therefore declined to join. Later, now using the name Paul Jones, he became the lead singer for Manfred Mann. Compare the work of the two vocalists on the early releases and here for one's self why Brian wanted Pond. Keep in mind that Brian had sussed out the secrets of playing the blues harp and shared them with Jagger. When Brian hired Jagger, he also signed "Brian" to his own death warrant.
Then along comes management. Well not really since the bi-sexual Andrew Loog Oldham was too fuckin' young to sign a contract which is where Eric Easton enters stage right. Horny little Andrew was actually a publicist. By allowing him on board, Brian signed "Jones" to his own death warrant since little Andrew was pining for a piece of Jagger's tight little ass. On top of all of this, somehow little Andrew also produced every Stones LP up to "TSMR" when they finally fired his ass. Not before however he kept much of Brian's guitar work buried deep in the mono mix. ("Satisfaction" being a perfect example)
Little Andrew never gave a rat's ass about the music. If he had, why did he bury a single note from his one musical genius. And the first thing he ever did was fire Ian Stewart as opposed to convincing him to let his hair grow long. Hell, the Stones were lucky that Stu continued to record with them. Stu just did not fit with little Andrew's vision of The Stones. He was out to make them the antitheses of The Beatles, the bad boys of rock. And he was out to make his wanna be lover the star of the show. One has to admit that little Andrew pretty much accomplished what he wanted. Don't know if he ever even got a thank-you blowjob from Jagger though. He certainly heavily contributed to the demise of THE Rolling Stone. Well, guess that's why they call it show-biz, a very cruel dog-eat-dog world. No Jones, No Stones.

He learned how to play the blues authentically, he chose the band members, and the name of the band, rehearsed and whipped them into shape, secured them gigs/bookings, he was the player manager but the others were more than a little pissed off when Brian was taking a bigger share of the gig money even though he was doing all the organising. I suppose Jaggers greed and lust for megalomania had kicked in early. I don't believe that Jagger or Richards would have ever got a foot in the door of the music buisness if it were not for Brian Jones tutoring them. The media and the Police had it in for Brian he had got busted for a small amount of drugs but more importantly Brian was a huge influence on the youth of Great Britain the cops were only too willing to teach him whowas really in charge. I think that the drug raids/surveillance paranoia etc took its toll on a fragile Brian. When he died of course the cops would write it off as a dumb out of control drug addict rock star fell into his swimming pool and drowned, case closed. His death was never forensically examined to determin the real cause. Poor Brian I know that his band mates have gone on to say he liked to beat up women and he had problems, but I like to remember the one off musical maestro that he was. Brian Jones really created the Rolling Stones -- i.e. without Brian Jones, there would have been no Rolling Stones. He basically taught Jagger and Richards what it was they were going to be doing and, certainly, without him the Stones' music would never have evolved into the sound and style that would define them. Despite his terrible problems (not much worse than Richards'), they never gave him his due. Mick Taylor was a great guitarist (and a great bluesman) but never a real replacement for Brian Jones. Truth is, the Stones never found a real replacement. They became more "polished" performers but after Jones' death they went into decline creatively.

Jones was great but they in actuality peaked just after he left. They put out ‘Let it Bleed’, ‘Sticky Fingers’, and ‘Exile On Main St’ with Mick Taylor on lead. Jagger/Richards were the primary songwriters, and whilst Brian led them initially and added the extra touch in his time, Jagger/Richards defined the sound of The Stones being that they were the principle songwriters. There is no denying that those tracks with Jones were awesome and had a vital energy to them.

After Brian’s death they definitely lost their ability of having a multi-instrumentalist as a band member. That fact provided them with someone who contributed immensely to their musical diversity in those early years that was really never achieved by the addition of Mick Taylor ( who was a brilliant guitarist - but no Brian Jones )

@@MichaelCorleone654 Jagger/Richards (the Glimmer Twins) might have been the song writers but in the studio is was a five man band to put each track together. A huge lot of input/suggestion being done by Wyman and Jones. Read BW's 'Stone Alone' and he pulls no punches on the Glimmer's hierarchy back then...

Such an eloquent speaker . Whose way of talking was later copied by Jagger & Richards , middle class boys themselves who still acted the somewhat cockney louts ."Ready Steady Go ", pressed by Andrew Oldham not to let The Pretty Things perform out of fear they might steal The Stones' "bad boy" thunder .
Ofcourse he wasn't "murdered"......Most likely a case of misadventure and a swimming pool spiel that went out of hand . Brian himself was to blame for getting cosy with these builder louts , who weren't payed on time by Jones' incompetent handlers who didn't serve him well and should've kept these louts away from him. A very sad and unnecessary ending .

It is possible to become psychologically addicted to anything but LSD in particular has no effect on a user when taken more than once or twice a week! Many a traveler thought they could extend their trip only to find that they might as well have taken a glass of water as another "hit". I crack up everytime I see that Michele Phillips video where she says that they took LSD every day! She's confused LSD with Heroin. Not exactly the same trip!

Normal was several months apart, so never any worries about dependence. Only got the breaks in intense work business that often to use it in a leisurely way, which is the ONLY way it's really enjoyable. Whatever you are consumed by at the moment, you'll only become more consumed, so best make it something enjoyable.

Brian was my favorite, I guess he was the cutest to me when I was a teenager, He loved rock'n roll and the blues, from what I read about him he could pick up any instrument and in time play it, quite talented he was! Sorry he had to die so young! From what I read he was no angel, kinda looked like one though! But know ones perfect! He had style and talent, I had read George Harrison liked him very much, he said he needed love, don't we all! I would have loved to have met him! Brian Jones, you were talented and special and had your own style! I miss you, but if anyone would be playing the blues in heaven it surely would be you! Love wendy
