Evening of July 1st The general in charge there had the troops build log walls they could stand behind, they had what they called a head block , There was a space between the top two logs so the troops could shoot through and protected their heads. Rebs had to charge up hill and were at a terrible disadvantage, Culp Hill is the only place were Maryland units from both sides fought against each other.
Thanks for taking me along Cliff and the history lesson. Tower of fear, good one. The civil war was bad, particularly because we were killing/maiming each other not some foreign aggressor at our shore. I'm so sorry so many young men's lives were cut short. We must face our mistakes and learn from them, least we repeat a most horrific time in our past.
The tower is just a hole going the other way. LOL Have never been to Gettysburg but hope to go someday. Thanks for mentioning the vanilla and peppermint. I live about 30 minutes from Shiloh National Military Park in TN. One time I was standing at the Bloody Pond there. I smelled vanilla but there were others there so didn't pay any mind to it. Maybe someone's soap or they were eating cookies type of thought. I left and came back to that spot about an hour later to do a video. The vanilla smell was still there. Many injured and dying soldiers and horses came to this spot. There was so much blood it turned the pond red according to the story. This spot is also very haunted. I have heard moaning and a sound like a cart being pulled by horses there late one evening. There are many stories of people hearing and seeing things at the park.
Beautiful area. So much to see in Gettysburg. It must have been a difficult, horrible time not only for the soldiers but the towns people too, weeks of rotting corpses of men and horses. I hope this country never sees this again, just the natural beauty. Thanks Cliff, I also was quite nervous of the overlook stair climbing 😉👊👍
I love driving through Culp's Hill & Spangler's Spring. It is a beautiful area. By the way, the green cannon tubes are original and the brass has gotten a patina. The black cannon's are repros.
I'll stay on the ground and let you climb that, look at the horizon not down. Beautiful place and thank you for the determination to go up the look out. Great video, and interesting history.
Hi Cliff, from the way you narrate the video's you transport the listener back to those times, I almost expected to see a soldier walking around out there. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖
You’re very dedicated to your subscribers, to climb up that tower just to give us a good view. Thanks for the video. Gettysburg is a fascinating place in our history.
Thank you Cliff, for your videos on Gettysburg and different sections of PA. I also love history, nature and Hiking as well and your videos are very informative and spectacular.
Thanks for telling the history of Gettysburg! I'm glad you stick to real history rather than the paranormal stuff and the hauntings. As a native Pennsylvanian I definitely want to get back to this area @7:26 we also learned what the word "denuded" was as I'm watching this with an English as a second language learner. That was the first time I've ever heard of that word used to describe trees. It sounds unique and funny! :-)
Fantastic. My hat goes off to you climbing up the tower. For me no view would be worth trying to get up there. Having said that the view was beautiful. Along with the history which is incredible. Thanks so much for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
My husband & I were there about 2 months ago. Such a beautiful area. We have been to Gettysburg 5 times, but learn something new every trip. We got to ride on the battlefield too. So cool! We did have a haunting incident one trip- at the Castown Inn. It was so sad to see it for sale and run down this trip.
I’ve done it numerous times back when it wasn’t illegal, now i believe it’s a 10k fine if you are there after dusk. The road that forks and leads up to devils den, when you make that turn there I have been in multiple cars that have just died right there between devils den and triangle field. Literally just stalled and shut off. So so so many stories… the creepiest night was walking down off devils den and when we hit triangle field AS SOON as our feet hit the grass fog rolled in thick as all get out. We all took off 🤣🤣🤣🤷♀️
I can appreciate the heights thing! My kids ran up those steps on a school field trip...I was slowly going up pep talking myself the whole way. LOL You did good :)
Cliff, you don't have to prove to anyone that you can make it to the top of the tower. If it frightens you, don't push your self. We still love you! You still strike me as an alpha male despite of your fear of heights.
I've heard that there are "strange occurrences" where Willoughby run crosses the RR. (just west of the RR-cut) It's not part of the battlefield property but folks who live in the nearby apts. have reported strange sightings in and around the creek. One made an interesting video.
Where could I find more on this???? Used to spend so much time in Gettysburg. Day time reenactment memories with my dad as a kid. College days of hanging out in the middle of the night in devils den. “Ghost hunting” with friends at 3am. And most recently taking my son and doing the proper bus tour and museums. Just an amazing area
I have a fear of height, but this would not bother me, as long as I can't see between the steps and the railing has a nice barrier, so you can't fall. I'm good to do this.
Whenever I go to Culps Hill there is one who walks with me. I can go back 2, 3 times a day and like clock work I feel him next to me. I Don't feel intimidate and I have been there close to dark. Been happening for years now I often wonder who it is? Maybe someday I will find out.
Where was the tower that they tore down? I remember visiting there back in 5th grade. It had the open stairs as well with steel mesh like you described.
When Was there , about a year ago, with the scout hike, I saw a 'trail cam' strapped to a tree, watching 0ne of the monuments. . . along the road. . . . . .who put it there. . .what were they looking for?. . put it there
I have a cool video on my channel I did at the Daniel Lady Farm this past July 4th of the reenactment. Plus I was in it so pretty cool first person views in parts of the video.
There's supposed to be a small grave site there of confederate soldiers somewhere on culps hill. I love Gettysburg and hope to move out that wat one day.

My great great grandfather fought with the 5th US Artillery Battery K there.

Thank you for this history lesson. I had never heard of Culp's Hill. I can't imagine how awful the fighting was.
The view is great up there
Appreciate your videos and sharing your knowledge
Imagine going up there at night with all the ghosts out there, creepy!

Awesome Area! Thanks for sharing!!1 Culps Hill is a great area!
He did well with the going up the steps and the height issue. I have the same problem don't feel bad.
Imagine going through their with a metal detector!
Lets Go Brandon!!
You’re not allowed to go metal detecting there. There is also no defacing the statues either.
You should come up to Gettysburg for Remembrance Day and Reenacting of Lincoln ‘s Gettysburg Address Pl
I can appreciate the heights thing! My kids ran up those steps on a school field trip...I was slowly going up pep talking myself the whole way. LOL You did good :)
You did great. I’m not a heights lover either. My skin was aching just watching you climb. Going down is rough too 😆👍👏👏👏
I've always wanted to visit Gettysburg.
It's awesome if you love history!
Me too. I've always wanted to go there.

Vanilla mint flavoring is also used in lipsticks, ice cream, syrups, fragrance oils, etc.
I don't think any of those things were out on the Battlefield during the war...lololol
4:36. Congratulations!!! You made it.
Are you sure you nearly dropped your notebook or was something trying to chuck it to the ground ohhh lol
Loved this Cliff xxx
was just on the Appalachian trail and the rige line was so hi but the view was great
Me too. I just did New Jersey and looking forward to doing Pennsylvania in the spring!
Cliff,
I wonder if any of those trees are old enough to have been there during the Battle.
Cheers,
Rik Spector
probably not
It was open fields I think.
@@klb6453 Right, though I would imagine they would try to get behind some object😁
I would love to explore places like that with someone like you. And, no! Not that tower! You have more nerve than I would.

Im with you Cliff. I made it halfway up that tower when I made the mistake of looking down. I had to scoot down on my bum!
Gettysburg is on my bucket list
Plus the parade …it’s a great weekend

I have been in that tower before a few times and the other tower off of pumping station road
Where was the tower that they tore down? I remember visiting there back in 5th grade. It had the open stairs as well with steel mesh like you described.
I believe it was where the visitors center is. There are some home videos on You Tube depicting it. I would have loved to have the chance to see it.
You should check out the Irish Celtic Cross Monument
Not first still happy absolutely love your videos love the History

Great View!
I surprised the poor guy didn’t throw up.
KEEP looking at the stairs. DON'T LOOK DOWN.
Did anyone hear "Help!" at 6:02? Were you near people at that point? It seems like you might of got an EVP.. unless you were with others. 👻
I heard that!
He's not far from the tower, which there were other people there. I'm sure it was what you heard.
There were other folks around the whole time I was there.

What ever happened to breat and Jenn RUclips channel? I have not seen any new videos posted up from them
I think you'll have to pay for a tour inside the game Wade house if I remember correctly
Jenny Wade house. It's still there
