  • In this video I'm giving you ideas on how you can use watercoluble crayons in your sketchbook. I'm blending them with water as well as using them like regular crayons. Have you tried these before?

Update because I'm only noticing this after posting the video: There is actually a blue color that is overlapping in both sets. That one also feels slightly softer in the newer set. Maybe it's just because the others have been lying around for a while?

You can buy the warm set here… they send to Germany :)

The warm and cool sets contain colors from the Neocolor 2 line, they're just packaged together because they were chosen by particular artists as a color palette. It probably is because of age that the newer ones feel softer

I DEFINITELY want to see more with this medium. I bought a set after your last video, but still haven't used them. I guess I'm feeling a little intimidated by them, but very interested, so would love to see more to give me the courage to dive into them. I might start by doing something like the swatch alternative that you did. I get bored with traditional swatches and thought this was a great idea!

They are so fun and playful-don't be intimidated! Make a few quick sketches so you aren't feeling too worried about messing up a piece you worked on for a long time. Also check out Bits of an Artist's Life with Sandi Hester. She does a few playful videos using the Neocolor II's.

I hope you develop your idea of paintings where cats are doing unusual things. This was so cute. Also, I did not know there were water soluble crayons. More fun for me!

These are such a fun supply. I have more II’s but a few I’s, too. I surely haven’t mastered them! I did find a cheap cutting board in (US) Dollar Store, and it works fine as a palette for scribbling to create a “paint” type consistency.

Absolutely perfect tutorial for these particular products... Other videos I've watched by other 'tubers do not properly convey the process as well!!! 👍🎈🎈🎈

I just use a regular pencil sharpener but with the larger hole size - you know, the little metal ones you hold in your hand, not a crank sharpener. it doesn't quite fit in a standard pencil size. The 1s are a little harder, but they still layer and blend really well. As always, your drawings are so fun and playful!

That set, plus the warm color one, don't contain any new colors; they're all part of the Neocolor 2 line. They were just selected by 2 artists as color palettes, I can't recall who they were right now. This was awhile ago, I'm surprised she was able to find a set. I haven't seen any in a bit.

There is something about using the Neocolor 2 crayons, they give me a very relaxing experience. I love coloring then using water to blend, it is soothing somehow. Maybe because you don't have to dip the brush into paint? I loved watching this video as well.

As someone else said, you can use the larger side of a regular metal sharpener. If you were to look for the sharpener made specifically for these, you'd have to search for Caran d'Ache Neocolor sharpener, just crayon sharpener won't give you the right result.
Their palette is also more of a texture plate than the ones to put paint in. It's maybe 7-8 inches by 4 inches or so, flat on one side with a bumpy texture on the other. You can scribble the crayons on it and then use a brush to pick up the pigment. Others have said they also use it with watercolor pencils, but I personally haven't tried it.

I've tried some neocolor 1 and they feel very different, much more like a typical wax crayon . I like the creaminess of the 2s even if I don't use water. I only use the 1s if I want a watercolour resistant colour down first, then paint over.

    • @mariac4602
      @mariac4602 3 месяца назад

I didn't even think of using the 1's as a watercolor resist. Such a cool idea. I will have to give that a try.

I have a big crayon collection, regular and watercolor, I like to have the variety and I also keep student supplies because I am a grandmother. Anything that I use, I have an equivalent for my grand that is child friendly. I don't share things like oil paint though.

Love this! New sub for Neo Colors. Have you tried Pastelmat paper or pastel paper? Clear gesso first on any smooth paper makes it very fun to smudge with a baby wipe. ❤❤❤

Get one of those thin bendable cutting boards that are used for food. It has a slight texture so you can rub the crayon on the surface and it leaves color . You can mix colors that way. It’s not so much for the shavings as for blending the crayon colors.
