They are all gone now, but I cherish these episodes with her. Harder to watch those after her death, however. She, John, Arlene, and Bennett were the show. Although, the adorably young Steve Allen was my favorite fourth panelist and other integral member.

It is not widely used today.. I was reading some old notes my grandfather wrote, and he used the term "parturition" in reference to a medical issue regarding my grandmother and discovered it meant "pregnancy"...

Robert Goulet was clearly nervous just thinking about singing the National Anthem just two days after his WML appearance here. Not only did he speak about being nervous, and the difficulties in remembering the lines and vocal range challenges, but when Bennett asked Bob who was going to win the fight, he hesitated and mistakenly said Floyd Patterson when he meant Sonny Liston. They were speaking of the Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston championship fight that's still famous to this day because of a purported "phantom punch" that caused Liston to go down early in the fight. Bob's nervousness continued to the fight day in Maine where he flubbed some parts of the National Anthem, which got him some bad press at the time.

So interesting that Mr. Goulet mentioned the Anthem being so difficult. He later on would mess up a National Anthem and was so rattled by it that it truly became a phobia. He would eventually be coerced by Vince McMahon of WWF to perform the Canadian Anthem for a Wrestlemania… I believe #6… so he agreed as long as it was worded on the Jumbotron. Bruce Prichard attested to the idea half way through the song he started looking away, and just purely belted it with joy. From that point on apparently he conquered his fear. So interesting that it was brought up here

I loved Robert Goulet in the TV remake of Brigadoon. The original was great but Gene Kelly was a lousy singer and the TV version had him acting opposite of the gorgeous Sally Ann Howes and his sidekick was portrayed by Peter Falk. My mom purchased the album which I think was in 66' and I heard it many times. I have a hi-rez copy of it now and it's great.

Gene Kelly, a lousy singer! No he wasn't; he was a very intelligent singer, with a real talent to utilize the limits of his range and hone his phrasing to perfection, and the results, in context, are a delight to listen to in the scheme of things. The same might be said of his buddy, Fred Astaire

goulet has no idea who was fighting, idt any of them did... it was the much anticipated rematch of sonny liston and muhammad ali, 2 days after this aired, as john mentions, in lewiston maine. goulett is like, "i'd like floyd patterson to win." dorothy, "we all would". except patterson had just fought todd herring 10 days earlier. and i'll bet when dorothy said, "your performance may last longer than the fight", she was implying sonny liston (not patterson) was going take care of ali...
ali had just changed his name and religion and was roundly disliked by whites, who almost unanimously rooted for the aging liston and patterson, who ali beat 3 fights in a row... liston twice then patterson. both liston and patterson were in their 30's, ali just 23.

Goulet cursed himself. He, in fact, messed up the lyrics. "In 1965, Robert Goulet sang the national anthem before the big Sonny Liston-Muhammad Ali fight. The crowd wanted to fight him, however, when he botched the lyrics right from the start: “Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early night.”
"I walked into that town and I was a hero. Then the fight lasted a minute and half and I walked out of town and I was a bum," he said.

Goulet: "You think you know the words and the lyrics and when you get up in front of 80 million people, all of a sudden you get a little nervous ... and the words may not come to you that quickly." Based on two separate statistical sources, there are between 2000 and 2500 people in the U.S. with the last name of Leppert. (Phyllis and both ex-ballplayers are all still living and among them.) That places it in the top 2% of all names in the U.S.

"On May 25, 1965, Goulet mangled the lyrics to the United States National Anthem at the opening of the second Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston heavyweight championship fight in Lewiston, Maine. Goulet had never sung the anthem in public before, and replaced the lyric "dawn's early light" with "dawn's early night". The gaffe was reported in newspapers nationwide the next morning, and Goulet was criticized in opinion columns for a lack of knowledge of the lyrics.[11] As Dorothy Kilgallen had predicted on Goulet's appearance on What's My Line? a few days before, the anthem lasted longer than the fight, which was over early in the first round."

Goulet was preposterously handsome and had a large, rich, semi-operatic baritone voice and was a great success in the musical "Camelot." But for whatever reason, his career seemed to go nowhere but declined slowly but steadily through the following years.

    • @rogerpropes7129
      @rogerpropes7129 3 года назад

I found him a mediocre baritone whose face was his career. He was reportedly a vain unpleasant a-hole; when I worked at a large resort hotel in FL in '73 he was staying there, ordered a ham sandwich from room service and sent it back as not thick enough. He and Carol Lawrence had a bitter divorce.

      +Wyatt Kincaid
Everyone knew who would be fighting in Lewiston. The reference to their hope that Patterson would win was due to Patterson being well-liked while neither Liston (considered a thug with a criminal background and ties to the mob) or Ali (viewed as a loud mouth braggart at a time when confident humility was prized in the U.S. and then adding to the mix what many saw as a repudiation of American values by changing his name and converting to allegiance to the Nation of Islam) were not.
John Daly clarifies this in case anyone thought they didn't know who would be fighting that they hoped Patterson would win the next one, i.e. that he would fight the winner for the title and regain the championship a third time.

@@loissimmons6558 You are spot on with your understanding of the sub-plot. To be fair to Ali, his reputation with the public changed over time, for he became beloved and for me, the greatest athlete of all times! Over time he tacitly disassociated himself from the 'Nation of Islam', though he remained a practising Muslim. His funeral service was multi-faith and included a rabbi who spoke. The most memorable eulogy was delivered by Billy Crystal. Louis Farrakhan was present but did not speak; my guess is that he was not invited by the family to do so.

Beginning at 22:20: The panelists' & John's contempt for the two heavyweight championship fight competitors show when Goulet jokes that he would like Floyd Patterson to win the Ali-Liston fight. So much of White America at that time considered Patterson a nice clean Catholic fella, as opposed to Ali's braggadocio & Black Muslim allegiance & Liston's thuggish alliance with mobsters. Ali would dispatch Liston quickly on May 25, then dominated Patterson in their Nov 22 bout.
