Incredible how fast these guys are at their age. They still have lots of power in their shots and the precision is unbelievable. Both demonstrated their typical tennis. Best players of all time. One can't do more to promote the beauty of this sport.
John McEnroe is really the purest talent in the history of the game and Ivan Lendl improved his game during the match because, even if now he is old, he continues to be a champion in the mindset. I admire you guys!
He was a superb volleyer, and had a great serve, but we saw what happened when he ran into power players like Lendl and, later in his career, Agassi. They took his spins, dinks and blocked service returns and swatted it off the court.
@dodododa Actually it is you who are ignorant as well. Lab test have always shown very minor differences in velocity off different strings, and the raquets are stiffer, with larger sweet spots and thus more powerful. Current thinking is that the the elasticity vs friction of polyester in recovering quickly from ball deformation is the source of increased spin.
there is nothing wrong with getting old, the fact that they are still playing and have respect for one another is a great thing to see. I loved both lendl, mcenroe and sampras, but when sampras retired and came back for exhibition games, I don't expect to see him play like he did before. I am sure you are not the same as when you played 20 or 30 years ago.
@Nikemac84. In this exhibition match Lendl is playing with a Fox/Warren Bosworth racket which has an unusual geometric head shape ( I believe it is octagonal in configuration) and is standard width (18mm -19mm wide). Lendl years ago, shortly before or after he retired from the pro tour, played an exhibition doubles match at the Philadelphia Spectrum using an earlier version of the Bosworth racket, which is the same racket that Brad Gilbert played with during his pro career.
Tennis is fun & great exercise at any age, & if you think you can't have a good time watching these two legends, think again.. and its worth a few bucks as well..they earned the right to be doing just this..
Mac is really fit these days. He still wants it in every match. His verbal outbursts are all real and always were. He gets frustrated that he can't quite deliver what he did as a player. That's unrealistic but in his mind he still wants to play like in 1984. Good for him.
@cain2335 Yeah, I know.. he also went with a bigger racquet, Mizuno, at least one year at Wimby. He also came into the net on other surfaces, but usually after a heavy deep forehand. He said he would trade all his other tournament victories for one Wimbledon championship. I remember one year at Wimby he was up a set (2-1 I think) and a break against Becker... then there was a lengthy rain delay. The rest is history.
It's very funny to see the disparaging remarks about their level. I would love to see any of the commentators (young, old, or in between) go out there and win a point off of either of these two. McEnroe could still (at this current age) have a world ranking in doubles. If you doubt me, look at the longevity of Navratilova - - same style of play even.
Only way to win a point is a lucky net court or freak bounce. And there would hardly be a chance of a rally to begin with. However a lot of former major champs are hopeless at predictions and inconsistent at coaching.
yep - Mac's groundies doesnt look like much compared to today's elaborate setup with the western grips (I think he is almost a continental grip!) - but very effective non the less
Well as tended to happen toward the end of their pro rivalry, Lendl won. But wasn't this with Mac retiring at 6-3 up? Mac got him earlier in the seniors tour I look forward to catching the two of them at some point on video for sure.
Mac improved his backhand! Lendl did some good serves. Great to have seen these two players again after so many years. Both are great sportsmen. John aged better though :-)
Mac hurt himself pretty bad a few hrs prior warming up, props to him for going out there when he shouldnt have because of all the tickets sold, but he had zero movment
When Mac beat Agassi (see my other MSG vid) he said in the interview that in this match he was kicking Lendl's ass. So they are never really gonna totally get over the past, at least not Mac, but they are friendlier now than when they were on tour.
What were the scoring rules here? I saw it up to Mac 6-2 and then they kept going!... to 6-3. What? Obviously an exhibition match, but what are the rules? Do they go up to a certain number of games? What's the number? Or is it something else going on?
Not really, I do both. I have paid to watch Mac and others play on Seniors tour and frankly I find it at least as interesting as the current tour. Then the next day I go out and play. It's All Good.
I reckon we could get it done without the holy acrimony between these two hahaha..... where are you I'm Providence RI. After I shot this video I played about 5 times this whole summer... it sucks: KingCast First Time Tennis 2012.
These 2 old tennis champs and foes, McEnroe and Lendl, are still worthy for club players to watch and emulate. But paying to get in to watch is ridiculous, frankly.♦
Lendl looks just like being as heavy as me, even so he is a little bit more athletic and less rigid than me . . . Amazing for His Age . . . and also for McEnroe it is Amazing for His Age ! ! !
Too good it seems. To think he was the one that started the trend towards fitness training and look at him now compared to the guy who hardly ever trained.
I don't know why a lot of these athletes never "wrap their ankles" like Michael Jordan does. I once saw Jordan in a locker room or at court side, not sure...........but he was adamantly wrapping his ankles. Then I thought to myself: "No wonder this dude was never down timed with injury?" These tennis players ought to do that a lot more often. And especially since their income and health depend so much upon it.
This is normal Mac Vs Lendl: The match is won or lost on Mac’s racquet. If Mac’s in form, Lendl doesn’t stand a chance. Lendl’s form never wavered too much.
@@uncletony6210 bullshit. How can you say these silly things...You don't know tennis history, when LENDL USED WOODEN RACKETS? This is the question, little boy.

Did Mac celebrate after match point before the handshake? Did McEnroe want to play until he finished the match? If you can't answer yes to any of those questions, then he DIDN'T win. Particularly since he CONCEDED the match. When you concede something, you're giving it away, not winning it. And it doesn't matter how well you played up to that point, you still have to close it out. Almost doesn't count. We've seen so many matches where players were at match point and still lost. And YOU are the one who doesn't understand.
Amigo: Lendl never won Wimbledon....If you don't win Wimbledon you can't get the Olympus tennis. McEnroe with wooden rackets was a God. He forced Borg to retirement. You have a very strange way to intepret the sense of sport.....
It's not Lendl's fault if Edberg or McEnroe are injured and have to default. You can't win and default at the same time. If you could, THAT would be a cowardly way to win. Why don't you look at the 1993 and 1994 U.S. Opens, where Lendl had to default in both tournaments because of his back troubles, also 1992 Wimbledon. So were his opponents being "cowardly" when Lendl retired? What you say makes no sense. Lendl won THIS match by default when McEnroe retired. I love Mac, I love Lendl, I have met both (I met Mac at his tennis academy the day after this match) but McEnroe did not win this match.
why does this seem so serious haha I can imagine fed and nadal doing this when they are 50 and they would both be laughing the whole time....mainly because nadal would be in a wheelchair

Not the purest talent, even though he's one of the most talented players the game has ever seen.
Federer is the most talented player ever. Even if I don`t like him.

Talent maybe, but mainly laziness. And for his character and lack of manners he should have been banned from the ATP forever.

it is from a brand called Bosworth, they are custom made
Commentator: "Now one thing you know about Lendl is he's not going to quit."
McEnroe: "I'm gonna stop."
lol
Yes there was another match after this one. See it on my RUclips Channel, Sampras v Agassi 2011 MSG.
Phew, I thought Big Mac might loose his cool at the coin toss.
Nice title of this movie. Makes me wonder who is going to win....
Lendl hasn't being playing for the last 14 years he's managing his daughters also his back has troubled him terribly .
Great game but why say who wins in the title it wrecks it lol
Who next Ali v Foreman ?
Huh? These guys are playing great tennis at 50. They could still beat most college players.
@Vhsmith37 Lendl was strictly a baseliner
Wow, This is awsome fellas! great stuff here! Thx!
Do they still hate each other's guts?
mr deeds?
Lendl is such a serious guy.He never smiles
Lendl has a DRY sense of humor. He's actually quite witty.
@frilloz4 Think of it this way if you're a young person and not into tennis or sports that is how you would find out about him....
Please no spoiler in the title of the video.

Mac's still got that great volley.
11:45 hahaha: Mcenroe verifying the height of the net with his racket...
They introduced McEnroe second because he is the box office draw. Lendl and Mac have not been ranked since the mid 90s.
Lendl... the best forever!
Well, I dont know about you, but I damn sure will pay to see Federer and Nadal play 20-30 years from now

Ummm...McEnroe's forehand?!
That is funny! Good catch. I played today, horribly. First time outside 2012, peace.

Nice.
McEnroe was clearly winning in this match, when he had an injury... 2 break points to 0. C'mon
Lendl hadn't played in 16 years!
McEnroe never trained even when he was a pro....
wait but mcenroe won, i don't get it?
