Hello , Phlebotomist here. Quick question, is there relevance as to alcohol skin prep first or iodine first when preparing the site for the blood culture draw? Reason I ask is I may have prepared the site incorrectly. Our lab only has the iodine and alcohol prep pads, not the chlorhexidine, yet.. Thank you !
Yes. A CBC test for a sepsis work up is to test mainly your white blood cell count (WBC). The higher the count, the more of a chance of an infection present. Blood cultures for a sepsis work up is to identify the bacteria/fungi causing the infection so we know what medications/antibiotics we can give the patient to treat the infection. So in short, CBC to test if an infection is present and blood cultures to test what kind of infection so we know how to treat it.
