Lovely old amp. What a cool project. Looking forward to hearing that bass channel, hot rodded and fruity!

You can clean the oxidation from old solid-core wire and the leads of new-old-stock components with a green Scotch-brite scrub pad, like you'd use to scrub pots and pans. Works much better than a razor blade, doesn't nick the wire, and prevents cutting yourself.

I completely agree mate but I quite enjoy doing it this. As you will see through my videos I tend to do things the hard way ha ha.

Great video! I have one of these in pretty much original spec, apart from a bias trimpot. The bass channel sounds exactly like this one.. crazy ghost notes and ridiculous flub. I was waiting with baited breath to see if your bypass and coupling cap changes made a meaningful difference - I know that's not the answer now so thanks for that! The cathode follower / tone stack / local feedback arrangement is quite unique - or it would be if it wasn't a virtual carbon copy of the 6G6 bassman but with el34s and a 3 prong plug!
I have both schematics infront of me and they're very nearly identical but I've just noticed that the bass channel is run from a single filter node, for both ecc83s... The fender uses 2 as expected, (but with one being shared by the normal channel which makes a bit more sense) - I'm wondering if that's a likely cause for those rather chaotic tones?! I doubt Leo would have let it out the door if it sounded like the Selmer does. Admittedly it's only when cranked but still.

So... for the sake of science, I tried moving the first valve to it's own filter cap - there's an unused section of one of the can caps anyway - added an additional 27k dropping resistor. The result? No difference whatsoever, crazy squishy ghost notes still abound. All the preamp voltages were somewhat higher than anticipated, too, which is probably not great in the cathode follower especially. I put it back to stock.
An interesting sound, for sure.. not particularly useful though. I always thought it was something wrong with my particular example (still might be) but to hear yours exactly the same was an ear opener. Most other videos don't show it fully dimed! I assume you used an attenuator, like me?
The blonde bassman it is based on kinda does this thing, too, just not quite to the crazy extent of the selmer - I just found a good video on here of someone playing guitar into each channel on all settings, although it's a loop so there might be an input level difference.. Search for FENDER BASSMAN 1964 CRANKED to 10! - I won't paste a link as youtube these days will delete the comment ... Ah well, I guess it is by design after all!

I still need to dig into the weeds. I found it interesting that both channels are out of phase with each other. I was thinking about adding a cathode follower just to flip the phase in the bass channel.
I'm actually selling this amp yo fund a new amp build.
Maybe I'll get an original and figure out some better mods.
