- Mice, bugs and hamsters are no longer the only way to study the brain. Functional MRI (fMRI) allows scientists to map brain activity in living, breathing, decision-making human beings. Read Montague gives an overview of how this technology is helping us understand the complicated ways in which we interact with each other.

5:56 the first thing I noticed was the creeper in the background... o_O
Yes, I would very much like to Read some of Montague's writings.
Couldn't resist!
i wish he'd talked more about what they found rather than about how they're finding it
Wait, the part I don't get is when he said, "the hub, ironically enough is in Roanoke, VA". What was ironic about it, did I miss something?
Interesting stuff especially his reminder that we don't know ourselves until we interact with a spectrum of people.
@@BreatheChristian crazy and sad. My heart breaks for those people.
min. 6:10 did someone else noticed the creepy guy begind the window?
A number of features of MRI scanning can give rise to risks.
These include:
1. Powerful magnetic fields
2. Radio waves (worse than some radiation)
3. Cryogenic liquids
4. Noise
5. Claustrophobia.
In addition, in cases where MRI contrast agents are used, these also typically have associated risks.
I wasn't sure that I would agree with him, but then I'm an introvert. I don't think that I identify myself or who I am through interactions with other people. More people are extroverts, so perhaps that is how they think and identify understanding themselves through relationships with others.
Yep...picked up on that too. TED has never disappointed till now
Jung was first to term the phrase Intravert and extravert(notice the spelling). He mainly defined them as inward looking and outward looking.Check him out.he was a genius.
Soo... what the title had to do with this? ^^'
Some people like to hear what they already know. It makes them feel smart and on level with the speaker. So why? To make people feel a personal equality. Or feel on the same level as the talker and be more open to listening.
6:10 the man in the background
did anyone notice the scary ass photobomb of that couple holding hands?
Plus some people might not know. And it works as a good metaphor, and reminds anyone who has forgot.
The guy in the video has a pretty clever name. Them parents must be proud
Background made me shit bricks at 6:05
My valuation of that is that it is bad judgement on Montague's part, he just wants to be the center of attention rather than communicate information.
I just happen to think this the is the area of science the really needs to become like commonplace knowledge if we are ever going to solve our many global problems. The biggest defect in human behavior is in not understanding who we are and how we work - better.
The corporations, PR and CIA sure do, so it's only self-preservation.
yeah i'm kinda lost as well
Interesting talk. I would have happily listened if he. had gone on longer.
I feel bad for focusing on the word 'literal' as (over/ab)used in this talk. Humans are 'literal canaries' -- whoah!? I feel bad about it, because this is an amazing talk and *that* is somehow what stands out to me.
That sounds like "nature vs nuture", which is still open to debate on how much each contributes.
Maybe so. I'd like to hear more about what he meant by the comment.
Remotely linking MRI machines via software to test the interactions of people using game theory that will eventually turn data gathered on interpersonal relationships into mathematical models on understanding mental illness. That's my best shot at what he said, but he really didn't have any actual results to share in the video (IMO). It's in process. Be interesting to know who is funding the research.
The colour of his sweater matches his lips.
A game changer-- but by who's value system?
It's not about being centre of attention. It's about feeling people know something you know in order to open them up more. If you don't grasp this then you don't know what I mean. It's like when someone says 2+2 =4. You know what they mean. When you share information people know they tend to feel more special you could say and in so at the same time there ego goes oh he knows things like me... you drop your guard and become more open. Rather than skeptical. Me I am skeptical. This is dangerous.
5:57 Brix were shat.
06:10 when you see it... :D
I saw the creeper! Eeep!
agreed
Best name ever?
His hair is equisitely purple.
Wut?! These are like the most simplified, accessible talks. How are they pretentious?
2/3 had a degree showing that a degree do not make someone intelligent or right.
Didn't really say anything: "we are doing experiments, we have some data, we need to do more experiments, we hope to have data later to tell you about." All this in 15 minutes of your life.
Could be a corrupt systhem
his lips are the same color as his shirt
He probably didn't go into it because he wouldn't have had time to even really introduce the topic properly.
People who are agnostic to me? What do they believe?
Most people to me are Carnies!
why is he wasting time explaining what a canary in a coal mine is when everyone knows. in limited time leave that out.
What a cold audience.
lol nice find :P
No wonder why Women are so smart, they know more about blood flow
If you are going to write in Spanish... make sure you don't write nonsense words... Por favorsito si?
lolzzz
Braaains...
wut??
When they began...
They've always hosted scientists and have an emphasis on primarily science and education.
They aren't the same thing, of course. That would be silly. Science is a hugely diverse organization of incredibly diligent workers and the process they work within.
TED brings their findings to the world, and does some other wonderful things, as well.
Why do they need to be the same thing?
You think the science talks are pretentious. Well, you're wrong.
interesting talk ... one would think this guy would be able to afford better clothes when he appears in public to present these ideas
lol
FOUND THE BLACK GUY!
These videos aren't pretentious, you're just displaying an illogical aversion to spreading knowledge.
I can tell that you just don't like intellectuals. It has nothing to do with reality and everything to do with your psychology.
lololol
That was such a silly comment.
Sure, that's all science does - sell ideas to the ppl.
Hilariously stupid.
weak.
