This was from America's debut album. It is the very first album I ever remember listening to when I was a wee little boy. America consisted of Dewey Bunnell (who wrote "Horse With No Name"), Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek. They were Americans who met in London as their fathers served in the military. Their three-part harmony is on par with Crosby, Stills and Nash. When this video was shot, Peek had left the group. He passed away in 2011. Bunnell and Beckley are still together and regularly perform in concert. I've seen them several times and had the pleasure of meeting Bunnell and Beckley in Lowell, Massachusetts after an outdoor concert in July 2005.

A fantastic reaction 🏜 🐎! A Horse With No Name was released as the lead single from America's 1972 (1971 in UK) album: America. It was written by Dewey Bunnell. It was produced by Ian Samwell. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Cash Box 100 and #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song also reached #1 in Canada and Finland. It sold over a million copies and was certified Gold by the RIAA. Lee Merton "Dewey" Bunnell (born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England), the song's lead singer Dan Peek (born in Panama City, Florida) and Gerry Beckley (born in Fort Worth, Texas) met on a US military base as the sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, England where they began performing live together. The group's first album was recorded in the UK.
Although the song is commonly misinterpreted about being on drugs 💉, it is not. "Horse" is slang for Heroin, leading to myriad rumors (denied by the band) that the song was about drugs. Some radio stations initially banned the song. Dewey Bunnell based the images in the lyrics on things he saw while visiting the US. This was originally titled "Desert Song", since Bunnell wrote it based on the desert scenery he encountered when his dad was stationed at an Air Force base in Santa Barbara County, California.
The song tells a rather abstruse tale about a trip though the desert. While the landscape is unforgiving, the singer also finds comfort in that scenario. According to Dewey Bunnell, the "horse" represents a means of entering a place of tranquility, and this tranquil place was best represented by the desert, which sounded pretty good to him while he was stuck in rainy England. As for why the horse had no name and why it went free after nine days, Dewey Bunnell doesn't have any answers - it seems the various listener interpretations are far more colorful than any meaning he assigned to it.
Many people thought this was a Neil Young song when they heard it, and many rock critics pointed out the similarities. In a strange twist: "A Horse With No Name", replaced Neil Young's song: "Heart Of Gold", at #1 on the Billboard Pop chart.
Dewey Bunnell explained that he was well aware that he sounded like Neil Young on this song, but claimed he wasn't trying to imitate the singer. He told Rolling Stone in 1973: "I try to use a different voice so that I won't be branded as a rip-off. It's such a drag, though, to have to not sound like someone when you can't help it in the first place".
The song has appeared in some television shows including 📺:: Parks And Recreation, Divorce, The Simpsons, Breaking Bad, For All Mankind, Veronica Mars, BoJack Horseman, Six Feet Under and Friends.
The song has appeared in some movies including 📽: Air America (1990), The Sect (1991), Hideous Kinky (1998), The Trip (2002), American Hustle (2013), The Nice Guys (2016), Irregular (2021), The Covenant (2023).
The song is also featured in the 2004 video game 🎮: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The band had some reservations about letting the song be used in the violent game, but Gerry Beckley's son Joe helped convince them to do so. "And now, almost weekly, we'll have some kid come up to us and say: 'I learned about your music through Grand Theft Auto'," Gerry Beckley told Songfacts in 2016.
Michael Jackson's song: "A Place With No Name", was released posthumously by TMZ as a 25-second snippet on July 16, 2009. The snippet closely resembles America's song: "A Horse With No Name". Jim Morey, both Michael Jackson's and America's former band manager, has stated that: "America was honored that Michael chose to do their song and they hope it becomes available for all Michael's fans to hear". The song was remastered and released in its entirety along with the original Michael Jackson recording on Jackson's 2014 album: Xscape.
    Song Credits 📝:
Dewey Bunnell - lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Gerry Beckley - 12-string acoustic guitars, backing vocals
Dan Peek - bass, backing vocals
    Ray Cooper - percussion
    Kim Haworth - drums
    America Info 📰:
America is an American Rock band that was formed in London in 1970 by Lee Merton "Dewey" Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, England where they began performing live. Achieving significant popularity in the 1970s, the trio was famous for its close vocal harmonies and light acoustic Folk Rock sound. The band released a string of hit albums and singles, many of which found airplay on Pop/Soft Rock radio stations.
The group have released 23 studio albums, 11 live albums and 22 compilation albums. They have also issued 47 singles, including two Billboard Hot 100 and three Adult Contemporary number ones. America won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and were nominated for Best Pop Vocal Group at the 15th Annual Grammy Awards in 1973. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012.
The band came together shortly after the members' graduation from high school in the late 1960s. In 1970, Dan Peek joined the band, and they signed a record deal with Warner Bros Records. The following year, they released their self-titled debut album: America, which included the transatlantic hit songs: "A Horse With No Name" and "I Need You". Their second album: Homecoming (1972), included the single: "Ventura Highway". Over the next several years, the band continued to release hit songs including: "Muskrat Love", from their album: Hat Trick (1973), "Tin Man" and "Lonely People", from their album: Holiday (1974), and the singles: "Sister Golden Hair" and "Daisy Jane", from their 1975 album: Hearts.
It was also in 1975 when America released their compilation album: History America's Greatest Hits, a compilation of hit singles, which was certified multi-Platinum in the United States and Australia. Dan Peek left the group in 1977 and their commercial fortunes declined, though they returned to the top 10 in 1982 with the single: "You Can Do Magic". The band's final Top 40 hit was the single: "The Border", which reached no. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. The group continued to record material and tour regularly in the 1990s and 2000s.
Years of life on the road with America had taken a toll on Dan Peek. He renounced drugs and alcohol, renewed his Christian faith, and began to seek a different artistic direction than Gerry Beckley or Dewey Bunnell. He went on to sign with Pat Boone's Lamb & Lion Records and found renewed success as a pioneering artist in the emerging Christian Pop music genre.
Dan Peek's debut solo album: All Things Are Possible, was released in 1979. The single: "All Things Are Possible", reached the Billboard charts, making the Top 10 in the A/C Billboard chart and number 1 in the Christian charts, becoming one of the earliest contemporary Christian music crossover hit songs. Another song on the album: "Love Was Just Another Word", had Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell perform the background vocals. This was the last time the three original members of America recorded together. At the 22nd Grammy Awards, the album was nominated, losing in the Contemporary Gospel category to The Imperials album: Heed The Call.
Dan Peek released several more solo projects and collaborated with Ken Marvin and Brian Gentry as "Peace" on three albums. In the years before his passing, Dan Peek released music via his website. In 2004, Dan Peek released his autobiography: An American Band, based on America's most successful period, and his own spiritual journey. His last musical collaboration was performing lead vocals on the 2011 album: Steps On The Water, by Etcetera.
In 1995, Gerry Beckley released his solo album: Van Go Van. From 1992 to 1997 he collaborated with Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Robert Lamm of Chicago, culminating with the 2000 release of the album: Like A Brother, Carl Wilson's final recordings before his passing in 1998. America also released two albums in the 1990s: Hourglass (1994) and Human Nature (1998). In May 2006, Gerry Beckley released another solo album: Horizontal Fall.
In March 2007, Gerry Beckley appeared as a guest on the Australian musical quiz TV show: Spicks And Specks. In April 2007, he appeared as a special guest at a Ben Kweller show in Melbourne, Australia. Beckley, Kweller, and the band performed America's 1975 song: "Sister Golden Hair", together. America's 2007 album: Here & Now, was a collaboration with a new generation of musicians who have credited the band as an influence.
In 2015, America released their most recent album: Lost & Found.
Gerry Beckley debuted his 2016 Blue Elan Records solo album: Carousel, on September 7, 2016, with a live performance at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California. Gerry Beckley is also a member of Les Deux Love Orchestra.
In 2020, the group released of the book: "America, The Band, An Authorized Biography", by journalist Jude Warne.
America still performs their music live on stage in 2023.
