Simone Signoret deserved this Oscar over everyone who was in the running...she was superb in the role! There is nothing this wonderful actress ever did that was less than the highest quality.
RIP Simone Signoret (March 25, 1921 - September 30, 1985), aged 64 And RIP Laurence Harvey (October 1, 1928 - November 25, 1973), aged 45 You both will be remembered as legends.
Simone really conveys what it means to be a woman ; a very revealing lesson for all men. This is really great acting because you fully understand where she is coming from and she breaks your heart in the end.I watch this film at least twice a year.Brilliant !
It's a great movie, I remember at the end, he's crying (because she, Simone Signoret is dead) and his wife is so happy thinking he's crying of emotion because he loves her! It's a terrible situation, so sad!
Man! That look on Joe's face at the end as he looks at the sweater she bought was so powerful! You could tell he felt sorry for what he was going to do but not sorry enough.
Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Simone had some stiff competition, but she sure deserved the Oscar. In the bar where she is alone has to be one of the the most heartbreaking scenes filmed.
Subtle acting at its best. She did'nt had so-called Oscar scenes. But over-all the effect of her performance is very powerful. Her eyes and face showed thousand expressions. Alice Aisgill blowing smoke towards the screen is imprinted in my mind. p.s i just love this movie and its background music especially during Simone's scenes, it was very fitting to her character warm and melancholic at the same time.
I don't even know who else was nominated, but I agree with you b/c this performance was sublime--she doesn't seem like a star pretending to be a regular person, she really seems to be the character she portrays. Unlike Liz Taylor..
Watched this on Amazon Prime. She was so heartbreaking in this part. She was such a lovely lady too as Alice: warm, wise, giving and authentic. She didn't deserve this treatment off Joe Lampton. God what bastard he was.
SIGNORET is brilliant in this flim and so strangely, one reminded of her real life story with husband, Montand, the same classe as Harvey, the same clime of the social ladder.
A lot of comments about Lawrence Harvey being miscast. I agree with this too. I never rated him as an actor. But can you think of who might have played Joe better? One person springs to mind for me - Richard Burton?! Handsome, devilishly charming, great charisma etc. He was possibly a bit old by 1959 to play Joe though.
Such a heartbreaking scene...hated Lawrence Harvey's character after this...one would think if he loved her truly his breakup with her would have been handled far more delicately.
I couldn't agree more. He doesn't brings the charisma or the emotional depht, warmness or even the sex appeal to make me believe that such an charming and interesting woman would fall for him. It's all up to Signore's performanse to convince us her feelings are for real. And by succeding so, we realise how great actress she's been. Damn, he ruins the whole movie.
Crikey - she was ELECTRIC! A true superstar, yr eyes are stuck 2 her... But that guy baffles me. Was he a big film star - he lacks sex appeal & has zilch charisma! It's very hard 2 believe that impressive lady wud have dated him - yet we have 2 believe she fell hard 4 him! Hmmm he was miscast by a mile!
Lawrence Harvey never had any real appeal. Robotic, stiff, and lifeless. He was his best in "The Manchurian Candidate" where his character was under mind control. You have to wonder how he got as far as he did as an actor.
One of the greatest french actresses ! Emotionally powerfull she was !
Simone Signoret deserved this Oscar over everyone who was in the running...she was superb in the role! There is nothing this wonderful actress ever did that was less than the highest quality.
THE most underrated, never discussed, master class best actress winner.

Simone gave one of the best performances ever. A deserved Oscar if there ever was one.
What a superb actress she was
This movie always makes me cry...
The scene made me cry...i felt for Alice..i really did
Great acting is timeless !
Simone Signoret is captivating. Compelling!
This clip is presented under Best Supporting Actress Oscar winners. Madame Signoret won the Best Actress Oscar for this role and picture.
A brilliant actress. She was born to play this part.
My God, she is so beautiful.
Ain't it the truth!
It's a great movie, I remember at the end, he's crying (because she, Simone Signoret is dead) and his wife is so happy thinking he's crying of emotion because he loves her! It's a terrible situation, so sad!
HUH! U revealed the film's dramatic climax! I bet U are the type that madly flips & reads the last page 1st...
Man! That look on Joe's face at the end as he looks at the sweater she bought was so powerful! You could tell he felt sorry for what he was going to do but not sorry enough.
wow. what emotion what beauty....thank you for the upload..
This movie devastated me as a young teenager..- mainly because I believed in Simone Signoret's tragic role...
An artist in her greatest performance.
Such a beautiful and fantastic actress
Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Simone had some stiff competition, but she sure deserved the Oscar. In the bar where she is alone has to be one of the the most heartbreaking scenes filmed.
Damn! What acting on Simone's part! Subtle and real! I liked her.
A brilliant performance and very deserving. I haven't seen her competition though.
Her performance here is sublime and catch her in " Ship of Fools" with Oskar Werner. One of the hottest couples in cinema.
A fine woman in every sense.
You are a timid soul, aren't you ?
What an actress .....
brilliant lighting & camera work
marvellous actrice!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quite right brilliant post...
Tres bien!
Directed by a genius.

You completely get her too ))

M.E.M Dennis indeed
His accent got thicker in 'Life at the Top'. Signoret was magnificent.
Watched this on Amazon Prime. She was so heartbreaking in this part. She was such a lovely lady too as Alice: warm, wise, giving and authentic. She didn't deserve this treatment off Joe Lampton. God what bastard he was.
Such heartbreaking drama. What a superb actress. Now, we have Marvel Superheroes and Wonder Woman. The decline of civilization.
I like Simone
@BitchErica1 this "girl "is one of the greatest actress in french cinema, girl!!!!
Signoret is really good in this film. She portrays la femme fatale in such a simple way.
SIGNORET is brilliant in this flim and so strangely, one reminded of her real life story with husband, Montand, the same classe as Harvey, the same clime of the social ladder.
She was absolutely wonderful. There was really no reason or need for that follow up movie. Without Alice who cares?
A lot of comments about Lawrence Harvey being miscast. I agree with this too. I never rated him as an actor. But can you think of who might have played Joe better? One person springs to mind for me - Richard Burton?! Handsome, devilishly charming, great charisma etc. He was possibly a bit old by 1959 to play Joe though.
She’s right “ to h*ll with you!”
Do you know if her win was a surprise?
@TheSuppActress I bet Elizabeth Taylor was the frontrunner. Am I right?
Such a heartbreaking scene...hated Lawrence Harvey's character after this...one would think if he loved her truly his breakup with her would have been handled far more delicately.
looks like a scene of my life story...!
No one ever confused subject with Marilyn MON-ra.
simone is wonderful, but harvey drags the scene down. i could think of more than 10-15 actors of that era who could've been joe lampton
jferkfjkj I've always thought that.

Very true - she utterly steals it! He was really lacklustre.
her being so good and genuinely heartfelt in her acting deserved a better acting partner
WHY DO YOU SAY IT'S THE FULL MOVIE WHEN IT ISN'T. CRAZY?
Audrey Hepburn...The Nun's Story!! I loved Simone but Audrey was the best!!
"I put her in the family way." What?
Lawrence Harvey never had any real appeal. Robotic, stiff, and lifeless. He was his best in "The Manchurian Candidate" where his character was under mind control. You have to wonder how he got as far as he did as an actor.
Agree, he has never appealed to me as an actor. He always seems cold and distant.
I never liked him either. Jane Fonda said working with Lawrence Harvey is like acting by yourself only worse. lol.
