My mother became a Pediatrics nurse in the early fifties. She moved to Los Angeles for her first job. One day a small woman came into the hospital, a scarf around her head and dark glasses on, and asked for several orderlies to assist her in getting "a few things" out of her car for the children. She came in with hundreds of toys, crayons, coloring books, puzzles, games, candy, and other treats, and proceeded to spend the entire afternoon playing with all the children and reading to them. No entourage, no film crew, no publicity agents...Just Barbara Stanwyck on her own. My mother had been a fan of hers, but now became a huge fan of Barbara Stanwyck, the person. For the fews months my mother stayed in Los Angeles, Miss Stanwyck came on several occasions, always in the same quiet unassuming way, with toys galore, and seemingly with all the time in the world to spend with the children. Whenever we would see Barbara Stanwyck on the TV in later years, my mother always recounted this story with a mixture of awe and respect. A great actress and a lovely human being.

What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing, she really is someone I look up to especially when her life was not easy and had a lot of hardships. She had every right to be the most bitter woman ever with what she endured but she was the complete opposite. Amazing that she turned out the way she did, a very loving, one of a kind human being! Just love her. People just aren’t like her anymore. It’s very rare.

Barbara Stanwyck was also a humble and benevolent soul. The camera captured her ineffable spark, her energy and fierce intelligence. Ms Stanwyck, we salute you.

Wow! What class and talent that woman had! I'm in tears now because her humble speech brought back so many memories and her closing prayer was so genuine. I loved Barbara Stanwyck in everything she did especially The Big Valley, Stella Dallas, Sorry, Wrong Number and The Thorn Birds. Just her last scene alone in the wonderful mini-series The Thorn Birds would establish her as a major, unforgettable actress. Miss Stanwyck won a well-deserved Emmy for that role as well as Emmys for The Barbara Stanwyck Show and The Big Valley. And at least The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had the sense to present her with a special Oscar before it was too late. One of my favorites of all time, I would love to have worked with her!

    • @shihlin1
      @shihlin1 Год назад

A really tough call that year for Emmy voters.
Ann Margret blew my socks off with her powerhouse acting for "Who Will Love My Children" as a terminal cancer patient fighting time to find someone to look after her children before she dies.
The miniseries did not have the pomp and circumstance of Thorn Birds.
If I had to choose, I'd pick Ann Margret that year over Barbara.
Again, a really tough call for Emmy voters.
I think Stanwyck's standing in Hollywood swayed voters in the end.

Great actress, and a class act all the way. I still don't feel Barbara got the credit she fully deserved, but I am glad that so many fans realize the impact she had on film...

WOWEE THETERRYE! HOW VERY FORTUNATE YOU WERE TO BE THERE IN PERSON TO SEE BARBARA GET THIS WELL DESERVED AWARD! MY DAD HAD TAPED IT FOR ME. NOW THAT TAPE NO LONGER EXISTS. I AM TRYING SO HARD TO FIND A COPY OF THIS PROGRAM.I WOULD LOVE TO GET THE WHOLE PROGRAM OF THIS SHOW WITH BARBARA IN IT AND ALL THE OTHER STARS THAT ARE LONG PAST GONE.THE BEST SCENE IS WHEN SHE ASKED RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN TO KISS ON HER OWN HER MOUTH LIKE THEY WERE LOVERS! SHE GOT AN EMMY FOR MARY CARSON. I LOVED HER IN THE COLBYS. THE SPINOFF FROM DYNASTY. SHE WAS BORN IN BROOKLYN AND SHE WAS TOUGH LADY. ALSO, VERY HELPING WITH OTHER ACTORS IN HER PROFESSION. I MISS BARBARA STANWYCK. THEY CALLED HER MISSY. I LOVE THAT NAME AND HER REAL NAME WAS RUBY STEVENS. RUBIES ARE RED AND THEY SHINE SO BRIGHTLY! AS SHE DID! THANK YOU TO THIS CLIP FROM THE AFI AWARDS! :)

I love these old stars and perhaps it’s because it takes me back to my youth.
I wish some of these stars would have known what we know about smoking, alcohol, nutrition, and exercise.
Well, we know it but that doesn’t mean we live it.
I should be thankful for their time with us.

She wasn't exotic like Garbo or Dietrich, nor spiky like Hepburn (K) or Davis, nor a scenery-chewer like Crawford. She was Ruby Stevens, the orphan with a grade-school education had worked her way up from the chorus and never forgot it. No Hollywood actress was nicer to the little people around her. None was less likely to throw tantrums, bitch about the roles the studios gave her or act mean around rivals.
She was unfailingly on time, properly turned out, knowing her lines and making helpful suggestions. She would play comedy or drama, even do pin-up pix for GIs (as when playing Gypsy Rose Lee) and was willing to be unsympathetic on screen (Double Indemnity).
She began in saucy pre-Code thrillers (Night Nurse) and was bossing Elvis around four decades later. The most exacting directors, such as De Mille and Fritz Lang, sang her praises, but she was so consistent that the public took her for granted, like Cary Grant. She never won a performance Oscar, only a career special award (cf Fred Astaire). But now critics and historians are exalting both her and Grant- Stanwyck's latest biographer has penned a thousand pages which take her career only up to 1940- and there is a growing suspicion that these were two of the best actors to grace the Golden Age.

so well said. You sum the beautiful and amazing lady up perfectly. I have been a fan of her since 1960 at the age of 13. I have always looked up to her because of all of her stuggles she overcame. She has and still is my role model.

I'm pretty sure that while she was nominated multiple times for an Oscar she never won, she definitely deserved one if not for one role in one year, for the culmination of her amazing career. While she was not ever considered a " bombshell " by definition, she was absolutely one of that most sensual, alluring and sexy women to ever grace the screen and that was totally based on her skill as an actress. She was indeed HOT.

Stanwyck, Stewart, Wilder... all in the same room. They stand for a better time of filmmaking, without CGI crap and without High Concept Movies without any creative input. They stand for class and talent.

From all accounts, specifically, interviews with co-stars and friends, Stanwyck was very gracious and supportive of young actors. Most significantly, in the case of William Holden, with whom she worked in the film adaptation of Odets' Golden Boy. Holden stated that the Studio was initially going to fire him when Stanwyck interceded on his behalf. It was the first major role for Holden and the start of a lifelong mutual admiration.
