  • The Boat That Rocked (2009) SYNOPSIS: In 1966, BBC radio broadcasts less than an hour of pop music a day, forcing pirate DJs to take up the slack from boats anchored outside British waters. Quentin (Bill Nighy) is the commander of such a pirate station, overseeing a host of seedy, lusty and dope-smoking DJs, including the Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Dave (Nick Frost), who makes it his personal mission to see to it that Quentin's newly arrived godson (Tom Sturridge) loses his virginity.

as a radio presenter myself, I feel his struggle when he has to cheery and uplifting on air, but in actual fact is hurting. hiding behind the personality you've made for yourself on air because you know it's what's best for the audience

Just love this movie, just love that song too... goosebumps every time I hear it. Most items used like mixing desks were original sea going items as Radio Caroline loaned them to be used. Really wished there would be a Radio Caroline mini series that would take you from 1972 to 1991 with the rocky history it had.

Brothers and Sisters: A great movie that brings back bitter-sweet memories that can never be recaptured. Great soundtrack (apart from Duffy's "Stay with me baby").
One or two anachronisms. The scene when Radio Rock was going off air for good. Don't think we had supermarkets that stayed open all night.
Coincided with the advent of the transistor. No longer were radios the size of small suitcases but the size of mobile phones. They came with an earpiece. Radio in inside blazer breast pocket, thread earpiece up sleeve into the ear, elbow on desk and rest your head on the palm of your hand covering the earpiece slotted into your ear. Made maths lessons almost bearable.
I'D GIVE ALL MY TOMORROWS FOR JUST A SINGLE YESTERDAY.

In 2016 I was privileged to film real former offshore "pirate radio" DJ's on board Radio Caroline's veteran radio-ship, the Ross Revenge - the station is nowadays fully licensed (at last!). No such heartbreaks luckily (they were a "bit" older and settled). While editing (on the other side of the glass) I discovered (through the glass) that not all DJ's are pitch-perfect - not saying who - you know who you are - but barry on regardless !

I would have guessed that it's incidental music by the movie's uncredited soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer, or 'additional music' by Steven Price (maybe 'Amy's Song', which I couldn't find). Though, after additional testing, I'd guess it's a musical fragment by a Production Music artist as two very different songs later sampled the vocal portion of it. I couldn't identify the original musical fragment or Production Music artist -- or this variation heard here -- but two different songs that use it are: 'Un Paarvaiyilae' by Dharan Kumar from the 2012 Indian movie "Podaa Podi" and 'Yeye Musica Machina' (2015) by Recycle (an Italian electronic band including Emilio Loizzo and H501L). Liner notes for an album containing the song suggest that 'Yeye Musica Machina' might have been used on an Italian radio program "Musica Machina" heard on Saturday nights (). Another comment said they heard 'Un Paarvaiyilae' in the Indian television program "Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan", while another heard the tune in a film including Indian actor Karthik.
