- Revolutionary Girl Utena video that gets at the extreme amount of risk that Utena and Anthy take literally leaving everything behind to be with each other. I tried to make this classic fresh again to the best of my ability, but lol you tell me how it shook out XD.
I'm not totally sure what to say about this one. You long time subs hopefully know I work super hard (as least as hard as I personally know how) to add to the really cool work within this hobby and as much as I can to the people in it :). This one felt so brutal, I'm still exhausted from it lol. Please enjoy the combo punch of all the techniques I've learned so far :D))))).
I love all you crazy subs and I (you're going to have to believe me here) really sincerely hope you had a kickass 2020. I know the pandemic has sucked donkey butt, but I hope you are still fighting the good fight to make it as good as possible for yourself and as many people as you can affect. Here's the best I can do for now! I'll try to get another one out before the year ends because you are all so awesome! Thanks for chilling and checking out my work! I don't take it for granted!!

I love this- it feels almost like its specifically from Anthy's POV. That wild swing from epic love story to psychadelic horror show, and the change that helped her break free of everything she'd ever known into a new future that's both scary and free? It kept me captivated the whole way through. It legitamately feels proffessional, the way every transition and section captures the mood of the movie and sweeps me off my feet. Gorgeous work, you should be so proud!!!

The choice of the specific cover with its cacophonous horns and explosive percussion adds to the overall manic chaos of the cut and fits the reality breaking ending of Adolescence of Utena, while the song Run Away With Me addresses the themes of escaping the shackles of everyday life for something better. Fantastic choice!

this cover of this song is absolutely perfect for this series and the message you're making with it???? the saccharine sweet carly rae, taken and twisted in minors and furious frantic horns, this is so GOOD. also the syncopation between music and visual beats that starts at 3:22 is absolutely jawdropping and sent the best shivers down my spine.
Thanks dundee! I’ve listened to this a thousand times now and I still think it’s awesome. I love how the intense cacophony collapses into this still, pindrop sound. The complexity of making a narrative work while being whiplashed by this song’s twists and turns was a major part of wanting to work on it! Haha it was terrifying!

Saw this at Katsu and SOBBED. Voted it best in show. My girlfriend who hates Utena (I mean she truly dislikes the series for many reasons, everytime I bring up loving it she is there with a comment about the stupid stairs and the CAR)...SHE VOTED IT BEST IN SHOW, YOU WON HER OVER.

Holy SHIT this is SO. GOOD. This song and video make me deeply uncomfortable in the best way?? The effort you put into this just bleeds into every single .1 second here. This whole thing gives me CHILLS but two specific bits I'm gonna think about all day are the subtle add of the eyes in the darkness while Utena's putting on the ring and the overlay of Akio stabbing Anthy with Utena pulling out the sword, what a phenomenal juxtaposition, this is just so amazing.

I try to make it blend in to the original art style as much as possible, so it's not always obvious to people I did anything. I'm glad you picked up on these with those eagle eyes of yours :D! Mm, impressive as always. You're great at displaying a lot of visual information without it feeling rushed or uncomfortable, the intensity of the song is matched perfectly. And combining the themes of Utena and the song has given this amv an identity and emotional core. I can imagine this track would've been tough to adapt, ouch. If you can genuinely finish another amv before 2020 ends that'd be insane, don't forget to get some rest!
Haha yeah this was crazy tough. It is really cool to hear you say that about packing in visual information without rushing viewers too much. I am so conscious about that I’m glad someone notices that I’m trying to be clever and show some restraint at the same time so peeps connect with the richness of the anime at least as much as the editing 😝. Just wanted to say that as someone who hasn't watched Utena and hasn't seen AMVs for a very long time (I'd assumed there were very few new AMVs and the art of their creation was generally lost) it was beautiful to see a new AMV for one I assume is a really classic show. This brought a lot of joy to watch, so keep up the great work :)

Finally watched it (with Elyse as well).
My take - it's super impressive how you have such a broad range of techniques and formats you play with in your AMVs. All of them have an underlying story element but some are these fluid visual experiences that you get lost in and others are visual ballads pulling important narrative threads in and weaving them throughout the video. This one was the latter and what I find most impressive is that in most cases I could barely tell what was the anime and what was you. Mark of a great edit I think.

Man, this was fantastic. Nice dynamic of the different parts of the song, lyrics REALLY match. Beautiful cuts and effects that match the idea. As someone who has made content on Adolescence, this really nailed the conceit of the film.

Augh this is so incredible! I just recently stumbled upon your channel and every single video is just SO incredibly creative and filled with lots of attention to minor details and this one is no exception (the details and timing at 1:04 - 1:21!!! the dress at 1:50 - 1:51! the overlay details on the clothes + the eyes at 3:39 - 3:45!). Your passion for editing is so palpable and really shines through in your edits. Some other highlights I loved: the juxtaposition and build up at 2:44 - 3:00 is so good, and the entire end part past that has such great energy and builds to such a great finale. The whole thing just grabs your attention and never lets go for the entire video.
The artist of the original song is one of my all time favorites, along with this song, and this cover is incredible with a bombastic, chaotic energy and you portrayed that so well while telling its own story (and the interpretation of the song--especially the literal interpretation of 'drive you'--is so perfect haha)
Really, this is spectacular and very inspiring! So excited to see what you put out next--keep up the great work!! :')
I saw this for the first time at Anime Detour this weekend! It has such great pacing throughout - steadily picking up momentum as it goes on. Then when it gets to 3:20, it blasts off TO THE MOON. Really great work!
Thanks, JB! (I've been a fan of your work since I saw you really coming out to compete a few years ago now btw!) I really put all my energy and cleverness into this. The riffs are so intense, the challenge was not overloading someone's eyes too much but still having that sweet kinetic energy flow through everything. I have learned a ton since making this, but this is still a solid fav of mine. I'm glad people are still enjoying it :)

I absolutely adore this! Saw it at Sakura Con over the weekend and I've had it on loop since. There was definitely some competition, but your AMV stuck with me the most. I was pleased as punch to see Utena, and floored by the visuals and song choice.
I was also inspired to finally watch the Adolescence of Utena. While I have mixed feelings about it (I prefer the series honestly) I think your AMV does a great job of capturing the feel and themes of the movie. Amazing work!

And haha yeah the series is much deeper with some really beautiful metaphors. I did do an amv to the series, too, which was in the 2020 delayed competition called No Choice if you ever find yourself in the mood for another Utena amv.

This is actually better now that I see the real finished version instead of trying to figure out which one was which on your explanation video. This feels so "freeing" for lack of a better term. Someone else in the comments said that you pack a lot of stuff in your videos but that it works without it feeling rushed. The amount of images packed in here along with some of the repeating clips were placed so well that it all just syncs effortlessly-well at least it looks effortless.
I think it gives people more reason to come back and see it a few more times to see the little things. Its the little things that no one notices that's usually where most people spend most of their time on but this entire video is a "little thing" and I love it. Also like I mentioned before great song choice!

Something interesting I've noticed this year is the amount of AMVs being made with Revolutionary Girl Utena. You even made another one earlier this year, probably my favourite AMV using this anime, and ever since that I've seen so many others use it. Pretty interesting to see an anime from the 90's being used widely all of a sudden, maybe the quarantine has had something to do with it.
Regardless, thanks for the entertaining vids this year, hope to see more from you in the new one.

I actually really didn’t want to use Utena for this one but after trying to find a good lesbian romance that was actually artful and deep I was shocked they don’t really exist! i think my favorite part of this video is really that moment ( around 3: 38, 3: 39) where utena's putting on the ring, but there's this red (i dont know cars.) turbine? engine? thingie? that bit from the transformation sequence, you know it, it looks like her heart flaring up. and then the board of lights, and the closer we get the more car-transformation-imagery starts flaring in, and pairing that with her determination its like--utena herself is directly saying to a stunned anthy "yes. run away with me. right now."
also, ugh, all of the car stuff. which is like, yeah, duh, she is! the entire emotional climax of the movie itself is utena urging anthy to go into the outside world, this big scary real world where there Is no set path that can safely take them anywhere, where they can crash and burn just as easily as they can ride off into the sunset, where the laws of ohtori and fairytales have no sway. i dont really have the words to describe it but that's basically condensing the entirety of utena into just a few seconds' worth of screen time, all with just the song lyrics and editing and ughhhh thats so TALENTED

Showing that scene is often super hokey or surprising in a weird way, so I was really intentional with showing it as a raw emotional transformation as best I could.
