    Thank you!
    You saved my mix for my exam. The high-hat was bleeding all over the snare, and a gate did not work. So I made a "trigger-track" where I duplicated the snare and isolated the frequency of the snare and side chained it to the real snare track.

      +Sverre Sandvik if its that bad i think you might have an issue at the recording phase.
      if the hi hats are too close to the snare, MOVE THE HI HATS
      and reposition your mics.

      I do this on all of my mixes. Sidechaining is the only way I gate drums, especially when the mix is very dynamic. Takes some fiddling around but generally works much better than a gate alone.

    -Trigger is sent only to real track

    Hey dude. great video as always! I took the idea of sidechaining a gate on the snare, but sent it to the room mics so when the snare hits, the room mics came in. It fixed my weak ass snare sound and turned it into a powerful monster. Thanks SpectreSoundStudios for making me less shit at mixing.

    I've been using this trick live for bout 30 years. I have my own drum rack with a 16-channel mixer, Valley People 4-channel gates and a few dbx 166A's and 166X's and it works beautifully live. When I got into recording, I had already been doing it live so i just applied it to my recordings and people were freaking out that I was getting this amazing drum sound on a shitty old Fostex A4 1/4" 8-track (It only had 4 inputs, so you could only record 4-tracks at once. Totally sucked balls, but for $400 for an 8-track R2R that actually worked, I couldn't complain.)

    you can achieve the same effect without triggers (i.e. when you get drum tracks recorded somewhere else and you're only there to mix). Duplicate the snare/base drum/whatever track and put some band pass EQ centered around transient frequency. Then put an aggressive noise gate on it, so that only a short snap of attack passes through. Use compression to have flat dynamics across the track (more or less). If you tweak things right you get a series of disfigured, irritating, useless hits. Then put some cheap-ass freeware audio-to-midi VST. With sound processed as I said it should be easy to adjust it to get a MIDI event every time the drum is hit and no false triggers in between. Bypass the audio on this track, align it few ms left, feed MIDI to sidechain of the noise gate on your main drum track and voila!

    I've been really happy about the results I've got from this method over the past several years but it seems like such a waste to have to use all that raw audio just to activate a gate. I really wish there was an easy way to have the drum trigger make a midi-note and record that live with the drums - then use that midi-note to trigger a gate. It feels like I'm wasting processing power, time to load a project and disk space. Not to mention up to 6 line-ins just for triggers (ugh). Any thoughts on this Glenn? Don't you think that would be a great idea if we could just record to midi and use that to open gates? Sure you'd have to do just a little tweaking to make sure you weren't getting misfires while also not missing a note, but that really would be almost fool-proof with a large range you could set the threshold to that would still make it work just fine.

  • @austinthebeast33

    Is it better to record your drums on, say.. a wood floor/ solid concrete foundation? It seems every time I try to record my drummer in his jam room (barn which is elevated) there is not enough room for the drums to breathe, and all the sound is being sucked away from the kit. Also, what is an Ideal height of the ceiling? Lastly, when recording in a room, is it better for the drums to be very much away from the wall, or just somewhat away from the wall. The reason why I'm asking is because the overheads sound great, but when it comes to the toms and bass drums they just sound as if all the mics are bleeding into each other and the vibrations from the floor are just sucking the sound away. Thank you and I absolutely love your channel!!!!!

    It would be amazing if drum samples had 20/100 variations of the same hit, and they were chosen randomly to be played. It would make samples actually good.

    • @MegaJaceace
      @MegaJaceace 9 лет назад +1

      MrGabbo97 Drumagogue can do that and it still sounds like crap. There's literally hundreds of variables between the room mic's picking up slightly different hits to the overheads doing the same. Ever so slightly different tunings when you hit the drum in slightly different spots - which if you simulate that it just sounds like a de-tuner on a snare (like sh**). Not to mention the sound of the rest of the kit bleeding into the snare mic slightly, right on time, right in tune, with slight variations in tone due to position away from the snare mic. Also there's "Breathing" in the room when you play a kick it will cause a chain reaction with the air making it flow heavy for a second which will effect the tone coming through the snare mic for the next split second simply because the pressure in the room has changed drastically temporarily.

However, I'd really like to take some sample hits YOU recorded, lead them into a program, white a song, use the samples, then see if you say they suck LOL hahaha. Because you'd be saying your recordings suck. I'm just fuckin with you man. It would still suck because every hit would be the same and it's not a live performance. I know what you mean. • @deaddrums
    @deaddrums 9 лет назад

    Hey Glenn,
    This is an awesome tutorial, thanks for showing. but when speaking about samples and triggers, what is your opinion about mixing live recorded drums and partially mix samples in ?
    For example, George Kollias uses triggers to make sure his kit sounds clean when playing around the 250 bpm. And for what I've heard, Tomas Haake used a main kit on his last recordings which was triggered aswell. So they'd mix both the live kit and a triggerd kit, for an even greater sound. I don't like using samples, but can't it be used as an additive effect ?
    I'd love to get your feedback on that, and keep up the awesome work :D

      ***** Even with a trigger and a really tight release time I've got kick-bleed before. But if you must I'd highly recommend "Fish fillet's" www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=5 It's a free gate that is extremely simple to use that listens to a frequency. I can even almost get toms to gate perfectly with the right settings without a trigger, but nothing beats a trigger at controlling gates. Nothing.

    Just curious as I have never worked with triggers in the past, is the output of the trigger recorded directly, or is the output of a drum module the trigger is plugged into recorded?

      +Marcus Wade recorded directly, its a contact mic. and then the gate set to take input from the trigger tracks audio

    Question for SMG's viewers comments: what DAW do you mostly use?

    This maybe a stupid question, but does the trigger plug into a mic pre or is it hooked to a line input on your interface, just curious and this video series is amazing

    When you mentioned using the trigger on the kick, are you using that to sidechain a compressor and duck the bassist or other low end?

    Hey, I really like the channel. I haven't explored all of your videos yet, so I'm not sure if this question was asked: what do you think of macs for recording and producing music? also, what daw do you use?
    Thanks,
