  • Is the way we educate young people with learning differences stifling the innovators, problem solvers and inventors of the future? Shawn Brown explores how Neurodiversity is linked to innovation, yet widely overlooked in our education system. Shawn is an award winning engineer, designer and maker of things. He’s also dyslexic and an experienced dyslexia adviser; having trained numerous organisations to provide effective dyslexia support. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Cyber Security professional here with undiagnosed dyslexia. I always did terrible in school and it managed to convince me I was not going to make it in the world. Even now I rather chew rocks than go to school, but I do like building things and that has managed to take me pretty far in IT. So to any kids out there loosing hope; build things and create! Make people notice and add value to any place you occupy. People will reward you for it if they are decent. It can be hard, but you can do hard things.

I hear you say certain disabilities, dyslexia, autism or adhd. But does this type of organization you mentioned in your ted talk also help people who have similar neurodiversity such as myself Auditory Processing Disorder that are able to be referred to this specific organization. Or does this organization only give attention to people with dyslexia, autism and adhd?

My first year at Uni thought that a good way of testing engineering skill was an exam that tested your ability to memorise long mathematical proofs. I completely flunked that exam although got A -> C for everything else and As for all my course work

The custard suit is brilliant. Eventually children are proof that most neurodiversity is there to begin with in all of us, regardless of clinical definitions of specific traits, whether perceived as limitations or as strengths. The goal should be to support a socialization process that does not suppress the primordial human diversity observed in children.

can anyone help me get a transcript of this?

In the grey area of the page an option to "view all" is on the top right hand side. Click on it and a panel with more info will open. Click on the show transcript, it will open up on the right hand side of the video. You will have to copy and paste it into a Word document or some other tool as it does not allow for an automatic transcript download. I hope that makes sense and helps.
