    I have an XS650 cafe, had several of them way back then, I believe 5 or 6 in total. This one is staying now :) Some of them wrecked my ankle and feet more than once. I´m 60 now and rather skinny, I don´t risk kicking no more, just scared XD. If the battery is dead, I get the booster. Riding it is still making me feel 20 again.

    My 1971 XS650 was starting hard. Still has the points and mechanical advance. Found the springs had weakened on the advance and not returning timing to start mode. Worth checking. Replacement springs readily available.

    I definitely think your timing is too far advanced. If it's an older bike with points, start there and make sure it's not stuck at full mechanical advance. The electric start on mine doesn't work, and when I start it cold on a cold day, I first prime it by kicking it through a few times with the ignition off, turn the key, and then while straddling the bike, hop up and come down in one fluid motion. Never been bit by backfire while using this method. Edit: Just realized this video is two years old lol. Not sure why it got recommended to me now. Hope you got it to work!

    bring it to TDC first before you kick it, if your carb has a throttle pump, pump it a couple of times to give it some petrol in the manifold, full choke and twist the throttle to 3/4th to Wide Open Throttle.
    then kick it hard, it will start for sure.
    Don't twist the throttle while you kick it, it will kickback for sure and it will never start on a cold engine.
    once the engine ticks though keep your foot off the kickstart because when the engine dies it will kickback really hard, when your foot is on the kickstart when the engine dies.

    • @thunzie

      How can you tell if it's at TDC?

  • @shupshekitty
    @shupshekitty 2 года назад +19

    Part of the problem is the way you're kicking it. You're immediately bringing your foot back up. You should kick and stay at the bottom of the stroke for a sec. When you bring your foot back up so quickly you're just asking for the kickback.

      That's why I only kick a bike from sitting on it so I prevent my leg from locking out. But my bikes are generally around 350cc so they're easier to kick over. Although I will say. I had an xr80r in 2001 that kicked back and it hurt like a mofo

  • @bleedingear1952

    Sounds like timing 180 degrees out ... try swapping leads from left to right and give another go. Definitely do NOT straighten your knee or it may end up going backwards.

    Either timing is off or you may have a bad points/condenser combo. I had to replace points and condenser on my 1979 XT500 because they were worn out. After replacing, it would backfire, run like crap and the kicker would take my foot off. I replaced again and it was fine then.

    Why do all you people try to start these bikes by standing off to the side??? When I was 15 I had a 650 triumph a 1966 it was bored out to an 800 I would straddle the bike walk that Kickstart till I know I was in the compression stroke jump up bring all my weight down on my right foot and end up straddled on the bike ready to go. What's with all the standing off to the side to kick it and then you kick it with your left foot you're not going to have all your body weight on it. And if you're afraid of it kicking back then set the timing on it and adjust your carburetor. I was 16 when I rebuilt my triumph.

  • @shaunmcgowan827
    @shaunmcgowan827 3 года назад +2

    If any engine backfires it's probably the timing more than likely is not correct cuz you have an explosion going on at the top of your piston where the valves are supposed to be closed not letting any of the explosion out and if it does it needs to let it out the exhaust that means the intake valve is still open when it's exploding so you get back fire coming out of the carburetor. Could be a few gears off on the timing chain if that timing chains not put in there correctly the cam does not rotate correctly

    • @airwolfie100
      @airwolfie100 2 года назад

      Mine did that very same thing. Put the timing a few degrees ahead and now she stats up first kick every time!
      My routine;
      Turn on petcock/fuel tap
      Put on jacket( takes as long to do as it takes the carbs to fill up)
      Kick her over about three times
      Pull choke out fully
      Turn on ignition
      Kick
      And a few blips of the throttle
      Put on gloves helmet
      Sit on bike
      Kickstand up

  • @klausl.2212

    Was my first thought: timing/position camshaft-crankshaft. But it's definitely an ignition-issue. Fires too early. Normaly adjustment is "F". 15○ BTDC/1200 rpm. If you reving, mark moves to "Advanced mark". Max rpm is 3500. At this point TDC (top dead center) of the piston is unneccessary to adjust the static or dynamic firing of your Yammie. Dynamic with strobo-light is better. Then you can see moving the mark from "F" to Advancend mark. Stupid question: wiring of coils: is "left coil" for left spark plug and "right coil" for right spark plug?

    • @alexisonwater3100
      @alexisonwater3100  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your Tips. The Problem is that Iàm not able to use a Strope-Ligt, because the engine is not running longer than 2 seconds. I`ve the Blue Boyer installed, which ignites every 360 degrees(means both Spakrplugs getting firred up). Thats what I thought, but I Will try to switch the wiring from left to right to see if somethings changes.
