    This video just popped up in my feed. I hear ya. I’ve been through what you’re talking about before. It’s nice to take a break and get excited about collecting again. All in moderation. It’s a great hobby, although crazy expensive. I live in Sweden so I have to import most of what I buy and it ain’t cheap.

      Moderation is key for me moving forward with collecting.
      Does the import cost / situation impact your decisions for what you pick up ? I’m certainly more patient for (some) titles when the cost is pushed higher if it’s an import.

      @@PhillwithadoubleL definitely. I have to be more selective cause it wouldn’t be feasible otherwise. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise idk. It’s just a bit frustrating since there are so many great releases being put out. For example, been wanting the second sight release of Green Room since it was announced but it’ll cost me about 70 euros to import. One day!

    Man Phill, I feel this video. I started a small channel to talk about physical media and had titles just stacking up in plastic and I was losing my desire to hunt for titles. The Jaws 4k releases triggered that moment for me. And now Poltergeist 2 on 4k. Its back, and you perfectly summed up what dealing with that feeling is like. Cheers my dude!

      I’m glad you could relate.
      I’ve always had titles stacking up around me, been collecting and enjoying movies for years. But… it’s so easy for it to all get out of control. I’ve been through all sorts with my habit.
      I wanted to make sure that when I started doing these videos that I wasn’t spending too much on discs for the sake of doing videos, instead I kinda took advice from an interview I heard with Robert Rodriguez (funny how it ties in with this). It was when he was trying to make El Mariachi. He said ‘use what you have’. So with my channel and videos I decided to talk about what I had… that’s when I started to become a little more reflective and aware of how I’d been collecting and reasonings behind it. Making these videos certainly helps me with some clarity of mind with the habit as i think about the subjects.
      Thanks for your comment 🙏🏼

    I can relate to some of what you said... but not everything. For one thing, I do occasionally stream something but I am always more likely to opt for watching a Blu-ray/4K disc (for one thing, the superior presentations - especially on titles with exclusive 4K or 2K restorations). I have gone lengthy periods in the past without collecting as much (outside of my bargain hunting) or purchasing anything and periods were I splurge and pick up a ton of releases.
    As long as you want to watch the titles you are picking up and will watch them (or try to watch them) eventually, then no harm? But if its collecting bad movies or movies you have little interest in, yeah, you should consider getting rid of those ones. I have been down that rabbit hole myself.
    When Dollar Tree started carrying Blu-ray discs on occasional drops (mostly titles from a decade ago or direct-to-Blu-ray fodder) I scooped up tons of dollar Blu-ray discs excitedly only to realize I mostly bought bad movies I didn't even want or have any real interest in just because it was $1. Outside of one or two titles, most of it was junk - so I tossed it all online or traded it. Now I don't bother.
    I feel differently with picking up Boutique Blu-ray releases or long favorite films. The Boutique labels are doing great with their releases, I can't even keep up with it all. Criterion Collection, Vinegar Syndrome, Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, Radiance, Shout Factory, Umbrella Entertainment, Terror Vision, Severin Films, 88 Films, Indicator/Powerhouse, Imprint, Eureka, Mondo Macabro, Deaf Crocodile, Second Sight, Discotek Media, Anime Limited, Warner Archive and a few other labels. The work these labels are doing is tremendous - quality films, quality restorations, quality supplements, quality collectors editions, and overall excellence. It's a film collectors dream - why I consider now the golden age of physical media.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  4 месяца назад

      That’s been my problem in the past, picking up titles I don’t really want or want to watch again… and keeping hold of them. All “for the collection”
      It’s why my collection started getting out of hand and I lost control of it.
      I certainly agree that it’s a golden age for the boutique labels in terms of the efforts that go into bringing us some quality titles. I just need to be careful which of these titles I’m picking up. They’re not all for my or my tastes.
      Shops like dollar tree are a curse for those low grade cheap titles a lot of the time. There are occasional gems but on the whole, the movies they have normally aren’t really worth adding to the collection.

    I’ve been watching your channel for a while . I’m loving the content you create I personally don’t buy new but do charity shop hunting then trade what I don’t need for a CEX voucher. Then it normally costs me nothing

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for commenting Andy,
      I’m building up some CEX credit as I’ve been going through the collection. Lots that should have gone a long while ago really. I’m trying to hold off buying new for the most part (unless it’s on sale or in an offer) so I’ve a few titles I’ll be using the CEX credit for in the future (hopefully).
      The new titles seem to drop in price pretty rapidly now too, CEX always seems to have good stock of more recent titles which helps.
      This limited edition set though, it had me dropping straight back into that buying ‘new’ and the fear of missing out hit hard. For me, this set is 100% worth it though. Always been a big fan of the movies and the director.

      @PhillwithadoubleL Oh I agree if its something you really want why not go and buy it . I found quite a few great pickups lately and found a few wii games that I traded at CEX and got Aliens Anthology 6 disc set . I picked up that Mexico trilogy on dvd today but there was not much credit for it . But perhaps I should have as only a £1 .
      I've been just doing shorts on RUclips lately on films until I get more time to do longer format.
      Ps I have been picking VHS 📼 for 50p each as I found a charity shop selling them

    Hi, Phill,I feel the same but I realized That maybe I just have a shopping addiction. Being a Thrifter, and collector Before Home video was even a thing, I have plenty of items to sell off, donate, or toss out, without ever touching my film collection. There’s a bunch I’ve held back from ordering and waiting on. Trying to be careful still. Making lists over actually clicking purchase.
      Things like True Lies and Aliens I’ve not grabbed yet, decided I could wait it out for offers. Attempting to wait on ordering anything until I know I’ve got the time to actually sit down and watch them. There’s a few slips here and there but generally I’ve been doing pretty well with it. Hoping it doesn’t open floodgates and I can stay pretty strict. Thankfully I’m still gung ho with the reorganisation and clear through. More things still going at the moment which is helping a little further.

    Does being more choosy with purchases make releases like this more exciting? I think it's inevitable, really. This year, not only have I limited what I buy, but I've also cut most of my streaming options (I only have Prime at this point). Been selling a lot on ebay lately and have already made about a grand in just over a month. I feel a lot better, as it takes a lot of psychological pressure off constantly pursuing a collection... and I've made some money to boot!
    As for The Mexico Trilogy box set... You know what would make it extra special? The deleted shoot-out that Desperado was originally meant to end on! Rodriquez had problems with the MPPA over the violence, so rather than cut it down, he just cut the whole sequence out instead. In a way it was for the better, as the conclusion feels more philosophical rather than bombastic and I'm not sure it would have topped the previous shoot-out in the film (the one towards the end, where his guitar case posse turn up), but it would still be great to see it after all these years. Surely Mr. Rodriquez still has the footage somewhere... ?

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  4 месяца назад +2

      I’ve been the same with selling on eBay and yes… it does feel a relief to have been shedding myself of all of this stuff. It’s strange when I put so much value into having a large collection to the lose a portion of it and not feel bothered in getting rid.
      I’m really happy that I’ve found something to get excited about again. It was all just becoming a bit too standard with the old habits.
      The more they could add to the Desperado disc the better. I find Rodriguez a fascinating director. I may not like all of his movies but I love listening to him talk about them.
      Also love he has his own studio and stage at ‘home’

    Luckily I don't get negative feelings about titles in plastic as I only take it off when I watch and that might be a long wait if it's a movie my wife isn't interested in seeing, especially a long movie!
    I was overdoing it just to get titles arriving (I did obviously pick titles I wanted but I really didn't need them all just yet) but have cut back a lot to pre-ordering things I _really_ want and could easily sell out, and waiting for a good price drop on titles I want longer term.

      It’s been placed firmly back in that Paul Verhoeven collection. Now I’ve been in that selection of movies I do have a growing watch pile. Suddenly got the urge for Starship Troopers and Robocop

      It’s that buying addiction that has me, and very often that fear of missing out driving many purchases.

      I do have these movies already. I want the upgrade, I want the extra… extras.
      I find Rodriguez a fascinating director to listen to. Sure, we might not like all of his movies but I find what he does so interesting. I mean, the guy can film movies in his back yard. My kids are loving his kids movies too.
      I’m sure there’s at least a couple of his other movies that I’d also go for a cash grab box set on too.
